Here in Australia the 'Silly Season' is the nickname given to the pre-xmas/new years build up where people become stupid for some reason, pack out shopping centers, become unbelievably short tempered and intollerant and are generally unpleasant while preparing for the festivities.

Ive had 2hrs sleep in the last 48, ive worked a double shift that didnt finish till 3am (slept between 5-7am) then worked all day today on my car stereo with a mate, did some cattle work, got terribly sun burned and have to work tomorrow morning at 8am...
