I absolutely love Lotita style.
It's elegant, with a touch of your own style.
I see nothing wrong with it.
I don't have any clothing pieces yet, but, I'm hoping to soon.

A short summary of the Lolita styles
I like the Lolita style, but I don't like wearing it, seeing as I don't look "Lolita" or sweet. I only like to pull of the so-called "mature" version which is the Aristocrat Lolita or the western goth counterpart which is Victorian Goth. Alex and I love the Victorian Goth style, and hopefully we can wear that on occasion. :D

I think it needs to be more common, as with all 'weird' lifestyles so people get used to it. XD

I think a lot of the Lolita clothing is cute. I'm not really into the hairstyles. I don't have the body for the clothes, though. I've never actually seen it/anyone wearing it where I live either.

I'm personally a huge fan of the lolita style, but i don't participate because of the unfortunate things that can happen.
I'm also a bit of a recluse, so such pretty clothes would be wasted being eaten away by moths, unfortunately :(

I like the lolita style, but personally, I am more comfortable glaming up goth than going lolita. It's definately "a lot of look". It's hella pricey too...but I think folks can reduce price by learning the ways of the sewing machine or needle and thread.
I do think Lolita is ok for adults to style after...but I am not so convinced it is such a wise look for the preteens. Again, no one EVER is "asking" to be raped...And people should be free to wear whatever...But you do attract certain people with your clothes. Just saying.
Still costumes are fun. Meh, do whatever folks...Consenting ADULTS....

I love the Lolita style, it's so pretty!
I lean much more towards Classic Lolita (with a tiny bit of Sweet Lolita) but I only use elements of it and incorporate it into my own individual style, rather than going whole-hog with it, so it's more suitable for every day wear.

The book is great. @ [email protected]; I mean, like, disturbing, but it really sucks you in. Or, at least, to me it did.
And as for the fashion, I can't imagine it being practiced in real life. :/ Ever. I can't imagine a girl wearing Victorian clothing in this day and age, espeacially when the Victorian period was such a shit hole for girls. And I would never wear it. Ever. Not even on a dare, and I've done my share of stupid things for dares.

I really really hate Lolita. Sure, It can be cute if you're going to a convention, but as a lifestyle? I might be the only person who thinks it's stupid to run around like a doll all day. And people will not take you seriously in the least if you're running around in lace and bows. Whenever I see people out and about in Lolita fashion (I live in Seattle and it happens) I snicker, because they look ridiculously stupid buying milk and POCKYOMGOMG in those dresses.
Keep it in the conventions and closets, kiddies.

The name "Lolita" has entered pop culture to describe a sexually precocious young girl.
|
Lolita (what it's based off of)
It comes through in the style. Basically, it was made so guys could fap to young girls. WHen you dress as a "lolita" you are cosplaying a sexual young child.
Huh. Not creeepy?

I think it's disturbing. e___e Especially "sweet lolita".
1) It automatically makes me think of the book by Vladimir Nabokov, as mentioned in this thread.
You shouldn't take something as evil and sinister as that and name a fashion after it. Mixing childlike innocence with sex is very disturbing to me.
2) It's based off Victorian children's clothing. I see nothing cute or sexy about a grown women dressing up as a child and parading around. Besides, as Tilly said, it was a shit-hole for women. Fashions such as the lolita fashion ignores the social history that is attached to the clothes.
Yes, I think some of it is cute. I like how it's modest. But when taken the extreme, no. It's not cute, it's creepy.

It's just another fashion style to me/.
For the non-rich folks. Learning to sew would be an idea.
I'd love to make some custom clothing myself. I got into a sewing club for a while and haven't gone further.

I think it's really pretty but I don't think I'd dress in Lolita fashion unless I was going to a convention just because I wouldn't feel comfortable in my area.
It's a pretty style though, very fancy/fluffy ^^; If I saw a reasonably priced toned down lolita outfit I would buy it, but it'd have to be more simplistic than normal.

I'll be reading the book as soon as my classmate finishes reading the book. Apparently, the library in our university only has one... XD
I'd only wear Victorian dresses on occasion. I love those dresses!! :D

To be honest, I love ONLY the Victorian goth style and will and ONLY will wear it on occasion (like convention, Victorian-themed birthday parties etc.). And Like I said before, I can't pull off the Lolita look because I look old as is... XD

I think that the main problem a lot of people in this thread are having, is that they don't realise how wide a variety the Lolita style actually incorporates.
Yes, this is Lolita:

(Which, I'll agree, can look a bit silly, and 99% of people can't pull it off at all).
But there are many different types of Lolita, Sweet Lolita is just the most obvious.
These are also Lolita items, from Lolita stores:
Which are much more wearable, even for every day wear, especially if you go easy on the accessories.
I guess it's more about what I was talking about earlier, with using elements of Lolita (bell-shaped skirts, old-fashioned cut etc.) without having to go all-out and looking like you're playing dress up.
As for those that do go too far with it, and end up looking a bit silly? I see no reason to be a bitch about it. They're not harming anyone.
People should wear whatever makes them feel good. I see fashion and clothing as a form of self-expression, and I love it when people have obviously put a lot of time and effort into their outfit... even if it's not something I'd wear myself, or I don't particularly like the way it looks on them.

I like Lolita, I wear it occasionally and it's like any clothing (only notably more expensive and cuter).
Personally, I think it's down right ridiculous when people whine and complain about it 'asking for trouble' because, honestly, how is wearing knee-length (or longer) skirts with collared shirts 'exposing' (most Lolita clothing isn't even made to show off cleavage or even shoulders). As someone said, it's based off of Victorian fashion but it also incorporates some elements from the Rococo period in addition to some strait up gothic influences and original elements.
Furthermore, Lolita as a lifestyle seems a strange way to put it. It's a fashion, based on clothing. There is no set code of how one should act while wearing the clothing, you don't change who you are when you put on the dress (though acting like an idiot and rolling in mud is never advised). In regards to Lolita, it doesn't matter how Victorian women were treated or what all else Lolita means. The clothing is based off that time period and name, not the people wearing it.
On the topic of Nabokov's novel and the name's other meanings; bad name choice, move on. The point of the fashion it to look 'cute' not 'sexy'. For every style there are people who enjoy it in the wrong way and a little too much, Lolita is not unique in this right and neither is any other style.

I also see it as a fetish thing, but I've been tempted to do Halloween with a Lolita costume. I think it's easier to pull off and less embarrassing than a cosplay.

@Tilly
I want to read that book, I just can't seem to find it anywhere around here .w.
And yes, that period was bad for women, but the style is based off of the clothing, not the way in which women were treated.
@Anna
It's not like you're acting like a doll, but I can see where you would come to that assumption. The lifestyle is more like acting very polite and watching your manners, it is also a very modest style; not flipping the bird every time someone says something you don't appreciate like most children do in today's society.
@Larry
Oh god I love your signature and name xD
/offtopic
I see what you mean as well, but anything can be considered creepy when taken to extremes. And I must admit, I have seen a few SweetLoli's who have scared me (though that was an accident ._.; )
@Claudia
I wish I could sew, I could fix so many things I've torn (as she glances at trousers that need repaired in closet)
@Elsa
I love the Victorian gowns, I tried to buy one, only to spend my money a big pencil and a dentists appointment

When it comes to what an item is connected to, I feel like it's take the good and leave the bad behind.
For instance , I like Victorian style and I hate oppression part.
I have enjoyed tours of old Victorian style homes.
I would like to try a corset on with an old fashioned dress, however this does not mean that trying on an fashioned dress means I want to emmulate sp? what they acted like back then. I do not want to become a Ms. husband now or ever.
There are many other old /antique items I appreciate.

I was once Lolita, however it became too expensive and I didn't have the resources to make any clothing or anything. Anyways, I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with Lolitas; however, beware the fact that men will most likely stare at you if you're walking around dressed like that.

I don't like dresses, but if I owned lolita clothes, I'd definitely wear them.
I also don't see what's so slutty about lolita, but oh well.

Completely respecting your opinion, but how is the Lolita style in any way 'slutty'? The body remains completely covered in all the styles I've seen...
