"Of course not," Faye replied, glancing over her shoulder at him as they headed out, "Why would I go to the trouble of using fire when I have this?" What an odd man! Well, her doubts abouf the veracity of his claims were waning... What sort of actor could pull off such astonishmemt about such a simple thing as a flashlight?

Darius gnashed his teeth as Audreyllis summoned the snakes and the spiders. That was no act of a god. It was a magic trick. Surely, that was all. Couldn't many sorcerors speak to and summon animals?
Bernadetta did not mind the serpents, the dragon and snake were both symbols of her father's family. Due to a distinct lack of tame dragons, snakes were all over the castle's interior, gardens, and courtyards, along with her mother's animals, the wolf and the deer. Spiders, however... like many other well-to-do girls, the creatures terrified her.

"Can they tell you what sorts of suspicious characters?" Faye asked sharply before Bernadetta could inquire about Audreyllis' abilities.

Audreyllis noticed Bernadetta's frightened expression, so he gently put the spider down and dismissed the arachnids, but left the serpents.
"I've been told that there are 3 of these vampires you've told me about, and one stranger, who I think is one of my siblings. Hopefully one of the nicer ones." A snake climbed up Audreyllis and whispered something in to his ear.
Audreyllis stopped cold and slapped his hand to his forehead.
"By all things...it just had to be the useless one...."

He turned to his new companions and said, "This serpent says that the seasons are changing nearby, into Autumn. That means Aviena is there, and she's being attacked, this way!" Audreyllis took the lead, following the serpent that had delievered the news, hoping that his hapless older sister could fend for herself for just a few minutes...

"We can't just run into that sort of danger with Elizabeth in tow!" Faye cried, skidding to a halt with Bernadetta clutching her side.
"Take her back to the room!" Darius called, darting after Audreyllis, "I'll go with him!"

Faye hesitated for a moment before picking Bernadetta up, birdal style, and whisking her off back in the direction they ahd come from.

~*~*~

"Well, well, well..." Three vampires circled Aviena, wicked smiles curling their lips and contorting thier dirty features. "What have we here...?"
"Pretty little creature," one of the three cackled, her wold black hair sticking out in all directions from her olive-toned face. She might have been beutiful, had she been washed, her hair combed, and dressed in more than rags. Even her eyes seemed polluted, their rich brown color dancing with a certain maddness. The only clean thing about her were her teeth, gleaming white against her dirt-coated skin.

"What do we do with such a silly little girl?" a man, the only one of the three, purred. He kept better care of his hygiene than the first woman, though not by much. Against his dark brown skin, his teeth were even whiter thant the first's. He had a scruffy, unkempt beard that rather matched the look of his dense, wild hair.

"We certainly don't let them live," their apparent ring leader crooned, eyes fixed on Aviena. Unlike the other two, who's beauty and handsomeness were hidden, hers was rampant, despite the dirt on her cheeks and the grime in her pale blond hair. Her blue dress was ragged, and still she looked elegant, even in her bare feet and free hair.

Audreyllis saw where the trees began to change colors and the air became cool. He pressed on through until he saw four figures in a clearing, three ragged vampires and one trembling goddess.

"S-stay back," she said, "I am the goddess Aviena, y-you had best not cross me." In all actuallity, Aviena should have been a powerful goddess, but she was so easily frightened and pasifistic that she couldn't hope to stand on her own. It was more lucky than immoral that she was in love with their brother, Saelin, God of Beasts, who could more than protect the naive goddess. But now Saelin was nowhere to be found, and it was up to the much weaker Audreyllis to step up in his place.

Making a frantic dash, he ended up between his sister and the vampires. He used a charm on his face to make it appear snakelike and terrifying, then he gave a threatening hiss to the offenders.

"Audreyllis!" Aviena said, "Thank all things you're here- these creatures aren't normal humans!"
"I know," he said sharply, "They're called vampires. I'm not quite sure how to kill them. If you have anything to break the skin on my hand, give it to me now."
"I'm unarmed" she despaired.
"Dammit." He put a hand to his newly fanged and somewhat unhinged mouth and bit hard- green venom began to ooze out of his palm.
'I'm not exactly sure what this will do', he thought, 'but hopefully it'll hurt.' And he flung the venom at the attackers.

The man and leader leapt out of the way just in time, but the wild-haired woman was not as quick as her companions. The venom caught her arm and she screamed as it burned her like acid, trying to fling it off without much sucess.

"You want to play!?" the leader hissed, moving towards Audreyllis.
Darius appeared at that moment, gun drawn. "Get out of here, Lauraine."
A smile spread across this Lauraine's face, "Darius! Is sweet little Princess Bernadetta with you? I would so like to finally taste her blood. Perhaps you have been careless this time and I will get my chance?"

Darius fired his pistol, the sound impossibly loud, especially to those with hearing as sharp as vampires. His aim was true, and the bullet hit Lauraine in the center of her forehead. Blood poured down her face from the wound, staining her eyebrows and dripping onto her chest like tears.

With a hideous shreik, she reeled backwards, clutching at her forehead.

Audreyllis and Aviena recoiled at the sound of the pistol- to them the device was magical and powerful. Audreyllis pushed his sister out of the way as the man in the group attacked. He continued to flick venom at the foes while keeping Aviena and Darius in the corner of his eyes.
"Darius, is that device of yours enough to kill these creatures? How do we stop them?"

"No," Darius said, keeping his gun aimed at the vampires in order to keep them at bay. Lauraine was being held back by the man, skreeching and clawing to get away from him.
"Bastard!" She screamed, an awful sight with her grime-infested looks and the blood smeared across and down her pale face. "Bastard! I'll kill you! I'll kill you! And your little princess and your whore partner! All three of you!" The third was still reeling from the venom, whimpering and trying to wipe it off. It only burned her hand.

"You need to stake them, behead them, dismember them, or set fire to them until they're nothing but ash. Seeing as options two and three are rather arduous, I don't suppose you know any fire magic?"

Audreyllis and Aviena looked at each other in dismay.
"Shit," Audreyllis said while doing the best he could- utilizing his power over certain creatures to come to their aid, shooting low-powered blasts of energy from his hands, and trying to hit them with more venom.

Suddenly, the wild-haired one got a hold of Aviena, who screamed and tried to kick her away.
"Help me!" The goddess of Autumn called out, making her season spread even further in her panic.

Out of nowhere, a swarm of butterflies dropped from the sky, carrying a dark skinned girl armed with a quarterstaff. She lept from the insects and knocked the vampire away from Aviena, then began to engage her in close-combat. Audreyllis sighed in relief at the sight of her.

"The hell is that!?" Darius demanded, not sure whether he ought to point the gun at the vampires or this new creature. Because this newcomer seemed to be currently after the vampires, he kept the gun pointed at his initial opponents. A scond shot tore through the air, and the bullet burried it's self in the chest of the man. He staggered back, his hold on Lauraine breaking- and she took full advantage of this.

She ran at Darius, knocking the gun from his grasp as she wrastled him to the cold, hard ground. The two rolled around on the ground, grappling for an advantyage until lauran managed to pin him beneath her, her blood dripping from her forehead onto his face. Smiling manically, she groped around his waist for his stake to finnish him off, but he was quicker. He pulled the stake from his belt with an arm he'd managed to free from her grasp, and plunged it into her stomach, unable to reach her chest.

"You missed," she said sweetly, though blood bubbled uop between her lips and dribbled down her chin. Darius kicked her from him in her momentary weakness, wrenched the stake from her stomach, leapt to his feet in one long, sinuous motion. She clutched the gaping wound in her stomach and staggered away from him, her smile turned to a snarl.

"We'll be back," she growled, motioning for the others to follow her as she vanished into the trees. The man followed quickly, the wild-haired woman extracting herself from her fight with Nezzarade and hurrying after.

Nezzarade wiped her forehead and smiled up at Audreyllis, "Sorry I'm so late, it took a while to find you."
Audreyllis embraced her tightly, so relieved to see her alive and well. Despite her power, it was a big brother's job to worry about his darling younger sister.
To most people they got along so well that they appeared to be lovers- they certainly didn't look alike with the sharp contrasts in skin color and features.
"Nezzarade, I'm so glad you're here. I met up with some allies who are going to try and get us all back in a group- then we'll try to find a way home. You have no idea how worried I was about you..."
"Excuse me?" Aviena said meekly, "dearest sister, did you happen to see Saelin anywhere?"
Nezzarade broke from her brother's embrace and shook her head.
"I was flying above and I found you two, but saw no one else. We'll find him though- you'll be together again soon enough."
Aviena nodded and looked to the side. Audreyllis felt a pang of sympathy for her- she was just as worried about Saelin as he was about Locyrex and, until just now, had been for Nezzarade.
"Well," Audreyllis said, locking arms with Nezzarade, "now that the unstobable duo is reunited, there's no world that isn't safe. It'll be just like another one of our adventures, right?"
Nezzarade laughed. "Most beings, even divine ones, would be sick of adventure by this point. You truly are a hero." And gave him a silly peck on the cheek.

Audreyllis looked over at Darius and remembered his manners.
"Right, beloved sisters, this gentleman is Darius, one of the vampires assigned to protect Princess Bernadetta. Lady Elizabeth, I mean. And these fine ladies, sir Darius, are Princess Aviena, goddess of Autumn, and Princess Nezzarade, Goddess of Butterflies." Both goddesses gave him respectful curtsies, and Nezzarade smiled warmly at him.

"You are a gifted warrior, sir Darius. Thank you for helping my brother and sister."

Daris gritted his teeth as Audreyllis called them goddesses, but wisely chose to make no comment this time. Best to avoid yet another fight. He was getting into more of those than he'd truly like.

"Thank-you for your words," he said stiffly, "And I thank you and your sisters for your... help. But I must be getting back to Princes Bernadetta, seeing as you've figured that bit out, sir." Darius turned on his heel and headed back for the fortress at a brisk pace. he hadn't told the others to follow him, but... he hadn't told them not to, which was something.

"What a strange mortal," Aviena remarked quietly to her siblings, "he doesn't seem to have taken to us very kindly."
"He's not mortal." Audreyllis said to her, perhaps a bit harshly, "He's of the same species that we were just fighting, a vampire, although after seeing that trio of scoundrels, I have found I rather prefer Darius' company over a great deal of other creatures. Speaking of which, I'm wondering what has happened to our less than pleasant siblings and the esteemed High Prince Domdel. Personally, I think they must be around here somewhere."
"Let's not worry about that," Nezzarade said, "I think we'd best focus on what's just ahead- and finding the rest of our commrades. Do you know where Sir Darius is going?"
Audreyllis took Nezzarade's hand and began walking with her, Aviena following close behind.
"We're going to see the princess he protects, the lovely Bernadetta. She's a charming girl Nezzarade, much like how you were as a young child."
"And is she pretty?" Nezzarade teased.
"Oh yes, very." Audreyllis said, giving Nezzarade a sly wink. They laughed like school children as they followed Darius back into the keep.

Once they had returned to the room Audreyllis had materialized in, Audreyllis gave a courtly bow to the princess and her guard.
"Princess Nezzarade and Princess Aviena, I would like to introduce you to the lovely Lady Elizabeth, or as I have found, Princess Bernadetta, and her most noble guard Faye. Princess, I would like to introduce my half-sisters, Princess Aviena, Goddess of Autumn and my dear Princess Nezzarade, Goddess of Butterflies."
To demonstrate the fact, Nezzarade winked and summoned forth a small bunch of butterflies to play about in the human's hair and such.
"She is very pretty." Nezzarade said, smiling at Audreyllis, giving a curtsy to Bernadetta. "It's an honor to meet you, your highness."

Bernadetta was delighted at this display, watching the butterflies dance about her in a cloud of grace and delicate colors. She didn't ask how Audreyllis had discovered her name, figuring Darius had let something slip again. She curtsied to Nezzarade and Aviena in turn, her poise far more commendable than when she had first done so to Audreyllis. As these two had entered the room in a a far more normal way, there was far less confusion and bewilderment involved in her reactions to them. "It is a pleasure to meet you, good ladies," she said, her face flushed with an almost childish excitment.

Faye inclied her head to the two as her mistress had done, and then cast Aureyllis a questioning look to know that she had things to ask him. For now, however, she pulled Darius aside to ask him to explain what had happened. As soon as Lauraine and the other two were mentioned, Faye gasped. "Lauraine?" she said quietly so bernadetta could not hear, "She is ineed here."
"Was," Darius said gruffly, "I expect she's run for now. But we need to move soon."

Nezzarade and Aviena took an instantaneous liking to the human princess, much as Audreyllis had.
"Well now, I promised to tell you about the Krypsek, right?" Audreyllis said to her, "Well, they're creatures that live in the deserts of the continent Dugondea. They're a dark purple in color, with very large ears and limbs and sharp claws for digging. Their eye sight is sharp but their sense of smell is sharper. Their mouths are very small, and their only teeth are two fangs used for puncturing the skin of their prey so they can drink its blood. They are sensitive to sunlight, and so during the day they bury themselves underground and only come up at night. Humans in my world used to have a nasty habit of capturing and starving the Krypsek to use them as death machines in gladiator fights but...Nezzarade and I intervened," he gave a sly smile to his sister, "and I'm glad to say they don't continue the practice. Now, did you want to hear about the Sanglai?"

"In a minute," Bernadetta assured him, "In just a moment I want to hear about the... the Sanglai. How did you- you and Nezzarade, I mean- free the Krypsek? Oh, that's just awful what they'd do to them! We had bear baiting fights as entertainment in the castle up until a few years before I was born. That's where they would set a dog on a chained bair to see who would win. My mothe routlawed it when she took the throne, but this bussiness with the poor Krypsek sounds quote worse! They sound slike fine, nice creatures."

The blood scuking might have turned most people off, but... One had to take into account who Bernadetta had been raised to look at as protectors. Blood sucking? Well, it was simply a necessity to certain creatures.

Audreyllis couldn't help but laugh at the young human's inquizitive nature. Though, it was a case of hypocrisy, since he found himself rather inquizitive as well, especially when it came to fantastic and undiscovered things.
"It takes a while to give the whole story justice, but for the most part I was helping out a human family rescue their Krypsek friends from one of the arena fights. I managed to get myself thrown into the ring, and Nezzarade started to free the caged Krypsek, who were all starving and quite mad, and let them run loose upon the city. Not the most graceful of rescues, but it was exciting.
Unfortunately, the Sanglai aren't nearly as interesting as the Krypsek. Sanglai are a form of lesser god, who serve the gods in Sheoltra. They're golden skinned and golden haired with large bright wings. They're not very powerful, and they're known for their submissiveness to their masters, especially Ozmundon." Here Audreyllis rolled his eyes. He never could stand the Emperor of the gods. "He's the God of Law and Order, Ozmundon. We're not to fond of him, or his son Domdel, God of Justice. But we do think that Domdel is here, along with some of our more unplesant siblings, Tzanusade the Goddess of Spring and Xochipili, the half-witted God of Flowers."
"Tzandusade and Domdel are very cruel," Nezzarade intervened, "and even Xochipili is known to do unforgiveable things in Tzanusade's name."
"They have this sick love triangle you see," Audreyllis interruped, "Tzanusade is related to Xochipili through our mother and Domdel through their father. Yet Xochipili claims to be in love with her, and she claims to be in love with Domdel."
"And Domdel wants Nezzarade as his bride." Aviena quietly added.
"A sentiment which is completely unrequited," Nezzarade sighed, "I rather dislike him."
"But before we ramble on too much about our strange histories," Audreyllis said smoothly, "could you possibly tell us the situation here? What was the reason those rogue vampires are after the princess?"

Bernadetta's head was spinning. this was a fair bit of information to take in. And those names! How was she to remember these things? And that bit about the incest-
"Vampires are guardians," Darius said, inturrupting her thoughts. "It is our duty to protect royalty and nobles, the common folk, cities, fortresses, homes, and whatever else needs protection."
"There's not much else for them," Bernadetta piped up. "There's not many options for a vampire..."
"It is a life we all choose," Faye corrected, "A good life, with a purpose to spur us through our endless years, and acess to blood we might starve without. It is a choice, and one we are happy with."

"And yet," Darius continued, a look of distaste coming onto his face, "There are vampires that beleive that this is servitude, that we are little more than slaves, if even that much. Their goal is to obliterate the 'tyrants'- excuse me, Princess- who 'opress' us."
"They staged a rather elaborate attack on the castle," Faye concluded, "So Princess Bernadetta, the King, seven eights of the high ranking nobles have been scattered in different parts of the country. The Queen and the remaining eighth of the high nobles have stayed in the castle to keep things under control and present a strong front."

"I see," Audreyllis said, "angry little rebels without an actual cause to pursue? Or at least, feeling oppressed because they're not seen as superior? Sounds both stupid and dangerous." Still, he could see where they were coming from- being part of a 'different' group always brought along a type of trouble. But who knows what kind of bloody history surrounded this conflict? Besides, any creature that would willingly harm someone like Princess Bernadetta was clearly on the wrong side.

"In any case, where to next? We still have two more of our party to collect, but surely they'll find us or we'll run into them at some point."
"Are we going to find Saelin?" Aviena asked suddenly, a tremble in her voice.
Audreyllis turned to Bernadetta and mouthed something, though it was hard to tell if it was 'brother' or 'lover'. Of course, since Saelin was both to Aviena the whole thing was moot.
"Our primary concern is to keep Princess Bernadetta safe," Nezzarade told her, gently but resolutly, "Saelin is a powerful god, he can handle himself. I'm sure Locyrex will be fine too." she said, casting a look to Audreyllis.
Audreyllis gave a sad little smile.
"I know." He said, "He's been alone all this time, I'm sure a few more days, or however long, will be just like anything else for him."

"It's an actual cause," Bernadetta said, "They're fighting for somerthing they perceive as not having."
"I don't see why you sympathize with them," Darius said incredulously, "They've tried to kill you, your mother, your father, and others in court. They've suceeded on more than one occasion, Princess. Sympathy is not an option."
"Perhaps," Bernadetta said, though she didn't seem to quite beleive such a thing.

"We should look for them," Faye said, "If they're allies, it will be good to have them with us in the event the rouges come back, or if we have an encounter with those... nastier ones."
Bernadetta saw Audreyllis' mouthing and decided that either way, it must be hard for Aviena to be without Saelin. "Don't worry," she said, putting a kind hand on the goddess' arm, "I'm sure we'll find your Saelin soon."

Audreyllis smoothed down Bernadetta's hair and said "Well, I should hope that we'll be able to get to the bottom of this then, but whatever is going on, it isn't your fault. Besides, if they want something, they shouldn't be using violence against innocent people like you. I for one have no sympathy for anyone who would bring harm to you or your family."

Nezzarade shook her head at her brother's antics. By nature, he was a bit of a flirt towards the people he liked, a trait that never boded well with Locyrex. Still, it was funny to watch, in a way. She just hoped the young mortal didn't take him too seriously.
"They're probably somewhat close by- since the three of us ended up close together. But if we search, we should probably move as a group, since you three are the only ones who know the area." Nezzarade said.

Aviena smiled weakly at the princess. "He would want me to be stronger than this, but it's difficult when he's away. I just worry so much about him."

"The price of true love." Audreyllis whispered to the princess, a wicked grin on his face. "Lack of all strength and sense. Not that Aviena had much to begin with..."
The Goddess of Autumn glared at him, but bit back a retort.

"Alright then, commrades. Onward- to find Saelin and Locyrex!"

Bernadetta bit her lip- in spite of Audreyllis' words, she felt somehow... responsible. She was one of the royals, wasn't she? Suppose the vampires were oppressed, and the nobles in their posh manors and fertile lands were simply too content with their own lives to notice, the vampires too used to convention to realize that there was perhaps more? Her father, she knew, felt the same, though her mother firmly beleived the same as Audreyllis. She pondered on it often, but... it was hard to feel worried and guilty with the god so near. She almsot wondered... could she be taking a fancy to him? He was, afterall, terribly charming...

"That's it?" Darius asked skeptically, "You do not plan, you do not think, you do not pause to consider what to do? Merely 'onward' with no idea of where we might even begin to look?"
"Darius," Faye warned, glancing at her partner in a look that told him to let it go, "Perhaps that would be the best way to go about things, your meticulous nature aside."

"Well, what else can we do? We have no idea where to start looking- I say 'onward' is probably the only way to go." Audreyllis was really starting to dislike Darius. Skilled fighter and guide he might be, but damn if he wasn't annoying with his need to contradict everything Audreyllis said. "In any case, I trust either yourself or Faye to lead us, since my siblings and I aren't familiar with the territory. Please, lead us good sir." He added with an almost untraceable hint of sarcasm.

"He is thorough," Faye said, as if sensing Audrellis' thoughts, "And he does not like to do anything without a plan, as improbable as a plan may be at a given time. Come. We will search the area around the fortress. I imagine your friends cannot be far off."
Faye began to walk next to Bernadetta, and the princess glanced back at Darius worriedly as he broke off from the group to keep a wider eye out for returning danger- and for the gods they were seeking, she hoped.

No, not hoped. She was sure of it. Darius was a good man, whether or not he disliked someone. He would not withold such information if he could offer it.

Darius himself was rather releived that his job was to look for danger from a farther vantage point. He couldn't stand to watch that beast flirt with his charge! If he was immortal like he said- and Darius could feel he was- he was certainly much older than the princess. Of that bastard tried anything, Darius decided as he geritted his teeth, there would be hell to pay.

"What do your friends look like?" Bernadetta asked, trying to move the conversation away from the very tense edge it was currently wandering along.

Aviena answered Bernadetta's question eagerly. "Saelin is tall and has broad shoulders, dark brown hair and golden eyes. He usually dresses in the skins of animals, and looks a little frightening at first, but he's actually very kind and gentle."

"To some," Audreyllis added, "certainly not to his enemies. And Locyrex is also very tall, but thin and pale. His hair, eyes, and garments are all white and his very prescence seems to chill the air. He is cool in his mannerisms, very stoic and often cynical, but he's..." Audreyllis wasn't sure how to best describe his lover, there were so many words but not enough right ones, "he has a compassionate soul, underneath it all."

Nezzarade had been noticing how closely the princess walked with Audreyllis, and how she looked at him. She hoped that they could find Locyrex soon and set that straight, before things got too out of hand.

"I'll look for them specifically," Bernadetta assured them, not noticing the tender note in Audreyllis' voice as he spoke of Locyrex. "And so will Faye. Darius will just keep an eye out for anyone out of the ordinary."

"Faye," she looked at the guardian, "Are we going going towards town?"
When the orange-haired woman confirmed this, Bernadetta continued, "We ought to rent a car, since the rouges got the old one. Maybe we could find them faster if we took a car... And the rouges won't expect that, will they?"
"That's an idea," the vampiress said slowly, "Though, I'm not entirely certain how we will find an inconspicuous car that will fit all six of us, plus two more..."
