The one time I'm actually excited about a homework assignment, I have no flippin' idea what to write about. We're supposed to be doing a creative one page essay about how highschool has shaped us as people.
Since it is a creative writing assignment, I wanted to frame the whole thing into a fantasy story, saying that my 'training' was finally complete and that I'd finally be able to go off and venture into my new role as a professional storyteller/novelist (after some wandering and odd-job holding of course. And, oh yeah, college).
But I'm not sure how I want to begin. There's so much imagery required to pull this off, not to mention the sheer amount of symbolism and metaphors -_-U

I'm thinking that I should write a little bit of fantasy fiction before I sit down with this, but I'm certainly not feeling confident or creative enough to do that. I know I want to be able to craft this essay into a fairytale world with dragons and magic galore, but I don't know if I can fit in in just one page.

Any comments or rooting on would be greatly appreciated, and by no means am I trying to be an attention whore, only stop myself from beating my head to hard

Good luck! I suck at fantasy writing, though in grade 8 I got top marks for my morbid stories. >.<

I have an 8 page essay due on whether a robot can care whether it lives or dies, and whether a robot could behave teleologically (can it have purpose, or fear or love, etc.)

Good luck to us both on our respective assignments. I think yours will be more fun than mine. :|

I'm probably thinking too generic here, but you could maybe use slaying a dragon as a metaphor for graduating? And um... buying armor and equipment is gaining knowledge from your courses?
Haha... actually that sounds really cheesy, never mind.

Good luck to you though! :)

@Miss Serene, thank you for your kind words, and best of luck to you on that essay (I should be very interested in hearing exactly what you think on the topic once it's done ;) )
@Hamlet, slaying dragons sounds like an excellent metaphor, I'll be sure to use it. And I'm sure the figurative 'warrior' in my story will be stocking up on all kinds of goodies for her quest ahead ;) thanks for the suggestions!

Absolutely! I'll be sure to stop by and let you know how it went, and what my answer was.

Could college and life ahead be another "kingdom" to conquer, so to speak? Remember: horrible fantasy writer. But it's interesting, making me think of metaphors and such. :3

Yay! *does a happy dance*
Happy to make people think! It's my job after all >.> Well, sorta. My job will be to put words on a page and make people want to see what they mean, but making people think is more fun. And yes, college is certainly another realm to explore, be it a kingdom or enchanted glade...or a dragon's cave >.>

Luckily it's only a page, but the trick is getting started and just going with it (and not going over that page limit!)

Well, I think you may be making it a bit too elaborate, or over thinking it really.
I'm taking creative writing right now, and I find the best way to do something is just to convey what you want in simple steps.
And never, never force metaphors and imagery.
Those should come naturally.

It's done!

I’m peculiar in that I see the world as just another plot from the books I write. I will never be too old for make-believe, that’s the game writers can’t afford to give up after all. It’s what colors the world extraordinary. It’s what makes things more interesting than they appear, where a walk in the woods becomes an epic quest, or school work seems like solemn and important training, necessary for the battles and trials ahead.
I wonder if all adventurers feel such trepidation as they prepare to leave their comfortable if provincial village and life to seek happiness elsewhere. I seek nothing but my own satisfaction in life, and the satisfaction of helping others along the way. Who knows where I shall wander, if not the gods or some advocate of Fate? I know not. I have a destination plotted out, and perhaps I shall make it there, perhaps I shan’t.
But I have learned that the destination is trivial to the journey, and it is the journey I shall commit to, just as comrades and I rehearsed for life out on barren terrain, knowing that bonds of friendship, unity of heart, and strength through determination is what makes the destination worth arriving at. And to that, I honor my Marching Band and the warriors beside me as we marched into each battle and emerged victorious. And I honor my many wise instructors, with whom I studied the languages and poetry of the dead and still thriving. I have studied wars and civilizations long before my existence and how the people of today dictate what shall become of tomorrow. I have learned about the composition of the very land I walk on, the mysteries, magic, and art of the sciences, and the art of art, of music, of the precise and subtle alignment of words, of beauty.
In short, I have completed my basic training. My classmates shall go forth in their various endeavors, and some shall be knights and some shall be merchants and some shall be rulers and some shall be fools, but I don my traveling cloak and take my walking stick in hand, ready to follow my own path. I will go first to a university, yet another dragon to slay, and then into the horizon. I have made it this far already and I haven’t even left home; there’s no telling what wonders lie beyond the realm of familiarity I’ve been so accustomed to.
I pick up what I will need and leave the rest behind. My cap and gown my helm and cape, my pen my sword, my wit my shield, and my heart a beacon into a dark and frightening world. I am a storyteller, and as I walk across the stage I will walk into a new realm, where I must turn my child’s play into works that inspire awe and thought. And soon I will call to the world, “Those who love stories, gather ‘round me”. And those who love stories will hark and listen. This burning confidence could not have been won without the pride of leaving a trail of vanquished foes behind me- all my fears and doubts melt away into dusk, all those villains who hindered me are long gone. There is no one left but my muse and I, and together we shall take on the world.
Onward! A happily ever after lies just beyond the horizon! Onward! To the bright and shining future!

Surely you could ask your teacher if it's alright to extend your story a bit.
But, what ever happens, good luck with it.

thank you all very much! I turned it in for peer editing today, and was told that I need some revisions but that it was otherwise a good essay.
If there was anything in the above posted essay that I could work on, please don't hesitate to tell me <3
