Painful: AIDS, or something like that which drags itself out for a long period of time.
Painless: Cyanide.

Most painless way I think would be for your heart or brain to just shut off while you're asleep.. most painful would be a slow agonizing death where there's like these razors and hundreds of cuts on you and like you end up bleeding to death.

Most painful:
Drawn and Quartered.
(They take you apart while you're still alive, pull out your organs... show 'em to you. This is old torture, no one does it anymore, that I am aware of.)

Most painless:
Returning to Original Form.
(I imagine this would be least painful, because all you are doing is letting go of your earthly body, and allowing yourself to return to your higher state, your pure energy/etherial body. This happens to everyone naturally, at old age... but to do it consciously, no one has ever tried it)

The most painful would have to be being stabbed with thousands of needles slowly until your blood runs out of your body... *shudder*

They say that dying in your sleep is the best way to go. I think that the worst way to die would be anything that takes time to happen. Like cancer or starving as an example. You have to suffer physically and have mental stress as well.

Most painful? Skinned alive.

both the most painful and the most painless. If you live, god that's painful and will eventually die from complications, or its an insta-death.

Most painful would be skinned alive, then poked with sticks envenomed and sprinkled with salt and chili. Then being scraped with sandpaper, and spreading chili sauce over your stomach and thighs. Then, branded and putting leeches over the body. Et cetera.

Least painful would be dying in your sleep, obviously.

Pain... I think that while these are all excelent examples of physical pain, has anyone considered mental pain? What knid of mental anguish could be so excruciating as to drive someone to suicide? What unimaginable terror must the hostage experience as the cold barrel of a gun is placed against their head. Even though the death itself might be painless, I would factor in the situation leading to that death as well.

Therefore in my opinion the most painful way to die would be after many years of excruciating torture. Having given up so completely that your body no longer even reacts, but even then the pain continues. Having your will broken so completely that you cling to life for it is all you have left, so that when death finally comes it is the final torment. The fact that your family and friends mourned your loss long ago only adding further tragedy.

The most painless? In ignorance. Whether it be during sleep, or just from anything that takes effect instantly before you realize what is happening. If you are old, you will have been preparing for your death for some time. You will have dwelt on the pain your loved ones will feel when you are gone, dread your death for their sakes. Though that may be the least painless for the subject... Well, there is no real way to make death less painful for those around them, but being able to say their goodbyes can help. But now we are getting into a question of the "Best" death, so I digress.

Painful: Burning, hanging, gun to the head, poison, disease, horrific accident, torture, beheading, etc. I think these all can be equal painful, and I don't believe it one lick that you don't feel pain when you get shot in the head.

Painless: Freezing to death, or in your sleep. Although freezing might sting a little bit as you get colder from your normal temp, it begins to numb the nerves and you get a warm sensation instead.

I personally hate the idea of drowning as being painless. I've almost drowned once and it hurt like a b*tch. Suffocation itself is unpleasant.

Well, astral projection is still having a connection to your body.
When you just let go... leaving everything, severing the ties to your earthly form, you no longer have a recognizable shape.
Pure energy, in a sense.
That is what I mean.
It's above astral projection, because you cannot go back. It's essentially like dying in your sleep, save for the fact that what I refer to would be a conscious release.

I guess the most painful way to go would be under some kind of toture, or maybe with a terminal illness, due to the suffering it caused before death.

The most painless, is probably to die in your sleep (hopefully peacefully and of old age).

I think that cutting your wrist would be far less painful then any other way.
As for painful.. hmmm, I'd have to go with a heart attack.

The most painful death can easily be being in a ring of fire. While it takes 3-5 minutes to die by a short stake, it takes around 15 minutes to get killed in a ring of fire, and you burn from the inside out most likely while conscious. I get the creeps just thinking about it. Crucifixion can do it too. Your diaphragm can collapse, causing you to suffocate after you've been hanging for days/weeks fully conscious. And that's not if the birds didn't use you for food.

The least painful would be what an earlier poster said, carbon monoxide poisoning. Once you're out, you won't even feel it.

I think the most painful way to die would be to be burned and cooked very slowly... especially if you were skinned alive first... I know that sounds morbid and gross, but there are people that has happened to. Some people have died from being pushed into a pizza-oven... as for the most painless, probably lethal injection. It's quick, numbing, and supposed to be very humane, so I imagine that would mean no pain what-so-ever.
