Not exactly, Anime is not that in yet where I live (Denmark) here it's the medias who abuse the anime...
By, as an example taking the American/German version of Naruto and turning it Danish... I tell you my soul died that day.

I admit that I am a lot into anime, and the only Japanese words I can say are from anime, but that's only because I haven't entered University yet... (Foreign Languages apart from English, German, Spanish & French are not easy to take classes in, here)

But here the most "narutards" are little kids who doesn't know better..

I acually use to be one of those.
I'm not anymore, though.
I'm still into anime and manga.
I am learning Japanese, too, as in actual conversation, not rambling bits.

The only excuse I can think of for randomly inserting Japanese phrases into English conversation, is if you and someone else you know are both trying to learn the language, and you do it to use what you know, or to pound certain new words or phrases into your own head.

It is frustrating when people believe ridiculous things about other cultures, or when they claim to know languages they only know like... two words of... but then, there are a LOT of annoying people out there. These are just a few kinds of them.

As for English anime... how anyone can say you'll learn Japanese THAT way, I do not know. Heck, half of the time it seems like they don't even pronounce the names or terms right in English dubs. You'd think they'd at least get the names down but... apparently no one (of the English productions) cares that much.

I must say though, every time I hear someone say "nah-ROO-toh" or, practically, "nah-ROO-do" ... it does make me feel like smacking somebody.

The only thing I've noticed about this is that much people who can't really draw manga makes "How to draw manga" books, and that's really annoying. In Denmark we have someone named Jan Kjær who have made countless books about how to draw and so, but it's easy to see that he's taken almost all he knows from Dragon Ball and Naruto
Such "drawers" shouldn't get the right to make books, if they didn't learn to draw and learn what manga really is first -.-

It... BURNS! o_O

I mean, I don't know a lot of Japanese. But I also know that if I don't know a language, then I should stop trying.

The only language other than English I know really is French, and that's because my girlfriend speaks it.

As someone who spends a lot of time in the artist's alley at conventions, the Japanese just hurts. It really does.

And then you run into the people who think they're the character they're cosplaying. Not... the ones that play the part well, because that's impressive. The ones that, anytime they see something involving the character they play, immediately refer to themselves as such. Just... delves a little into the world of delusion... >>

And that's my rant.

You're thinking of Kowai, which means scary. I had a couple of strange faces when I tried to say Kawaii to Japanese students as they thought I said this. Whoops!

You know, I was like this person...to a degree. I never randomly injected Japanese sayings or vocabulary while talking to a non-Japanese student or Japanese speaking person, but I did do a lot of studying and I wanted so desperately become an exchange student in Japan. Why? Because I fell in love with the trickling of 'main stream' anime and videogames and found the little tidbits of their culture fascinating.

Then I did this thing called grow up, and I realized that there really isn't much need for someone of my caliber - someone who was enthusiastic about the culture and language but could only read first grade level books. I still enjoy reading manga, watching anime, and playing videogames but I don't submerse myself into it fully like I use to. Now it's just something I do 'when I got the time'. Give it a few years and you'll find that whatever you passionately do will become just a sidelined hobby. Life, kids, and growing up tends to do that to you.

Ugh, I hate hearing about people like that.
They annoy me.
Luckily I've not made friends with anyone like that.
But if I hear anyone yell KAWAII! at me I'll run a mile. .__.
It's also pretty hilarious when people get it wrong. They think they're pronouncing it right but they clearly aren't and get all defensive when I correct them. ^__^
I don't know much Japanese, but I know how to pronounce the words when I see them written down.
I have seen people in book stores drool of the manga books and pronounce the titles wrong. I usually stand there checking out some of the lesser popular titles going -__-'' while they squeal and eep over whatever shojo/yaoi manga they picked up.

I don't think at any point I thought I could speak Japanese fluently, nor have I turned myself into a premade character.
I know when I was little I'd pretend to be a pokemon, and I'd make myself into a character to fit into a cartoon story. But that was me being a kid and having fun.

Why do people think they're going to be a cool person by going OMG KAWAII DESU! Honestly, it makes them appear like five year olds.

Yeah, people like that can definitely be annoying. Thankfully I haven't seen many of those lately... mostly just lots of annoying 4channers saying "Lawl!" IRL instead of laughing >_>;

When I was in 6th grade I did mix kawaii into my regular speech online, but that was almost ten years ago and there were not very many 'wannabe Japanese' people around yet so I didn't really know any better. That didn't last for very long of course. I know with some people, misusing Japanese is just a phase they go through, and eventually they develop a genuine interest in learning the real language, learning about actual Japanese culture, etc, and stop thinking they know everything... but as for the actual "omg kawaii desu neko!!!11" people, I tend not to take them seriously. I'm pretty sure like 99% of them are trolls. ;)

Dubbed anime fans, though. Eeeeughhh. Just thinking about them sends a terrible chill down my spine. =_=;; How there be so many people in the world with such terrible taste...?

That has to be the most horribly depressing thing I have ever heard someone say. :|

Anyone can live their life for their passions, if they possess the drive and focus to. Life does get a lot more difficult once you're out on your own, as I most definitely know from experience, but geez, why live life at all if not for your dreams? =/ My passions in life are the fuel that keeps me going, keeps me pushing forward in this crazy society that does nothing but try to push you down and make you give up.

Telling someone to give up their passions is a terrible thing. Our ability to hold a passion in our heart and fight the current and rise above is something that helps shape us into who we are, and it should never be taken away from anyone.

I haven't achieved my dream yet. But I won't give up or stop until I do, because it means the world to me. Even if you can't make a living for yourself doing what you are the most passionate about, you should never, ever give it up.

And by all means, if you have the choice, don't have kids until you've achieved your own dreams in life. No child needs a parent who pushes their unfulfilled desires onto them. Happy parents mean happier children.

Just my two cents on that.

(Sorry, I guess this is probably off-topic. But I couldn't just leave that alone.)

I am not like that anymore, Thank god. Though in my head I'll be like "That is cute.." xD But I won't say Kawaii, that is dead to me now. =]

Well about the Japanese speaking very bad english, all I can think about is this Japanese quiz show where all these guys had to sit quietly through someone butchering english to hillarious porportions and whenever they laughed they got paddled >>' The winner got loads of cash :D

And then I bought Wolf's Rain as a box set and when it came I liked the Japanese voices better (american voices sometimes ruin the character for me if I started watching it as a subtitle) and they DESTROYED the subtitles...Half of the sentences made no sense...

Anyway, I'm trying to get what your saying here...I am a fan of yaoi, yuri, shounen-ai, shojo-ai (is it shojo or shoujo? always confuse myself for some reason...) and I thought Bleach was okay, I love the Naruto manga (am disgusted with the anime...) to bits but I also read more mangas then I can remember.

I pick up bits of Japanese from anime subtitles but I don't try to use it too much...just simple things that I know for sure are right and mostly for fanfiction writing purposes. I would LOVE to learn Japanese correctly but you had to have been in a certain club in a certain middle school to take Japanese classes...My friend and I's current greatest dream is to buy Rosetta Stone Japanese...

I KNOW the Japanese are perfectly capable of speaking English, I've heard them sing in English too so I'm pretty sure they can speak it just as well as I could someday speak Japanese...

I can't think of a reason why someone would assume an entire country is lolita ^^' that pretty creepy really..and as for the anime not portraying people right, I agree...

There are ugly and pretty people in Asia, just like the rest of the world...

I don't think of yaoi and yuri as the same thing >>' Just like I don't think of gay and lesbian 'action' as the same thing... They are terms used in the anime world most, it's like learning that a manga is...That's what I think anyway

I say Kawai desu ne to myself whenever I see something very cute and I'm alone...I saw someone say it in a comment for an amv and I already knew those words, it's just now I think of Sebastion and Ciel everytime I say it and vice versa....

This isn't meant to be all "RAWR IMA GONNA NOM YOU FOR THIS" it's just me being confused and kinda sleepy...

(I think I kinda know of a guy like what you describe except he's a bit homophobic...but he kinda irritates the crap out of me -_-)

...hmmm. I'm 19 and I've liked anime for the past seven years. Personally, I don't find it any different than liking books. It has plot. I like plot. End of story. Japanese culture? It exists outside of anime. But neither is anime their Disney-equivalent. It's not rampant, and its not socially okay for anyone in any culture to be 40 and surrounded by comic books of any sort. Maniac collectors are in every culture, over just about anything, however... but no, Japan does not fan over their own creation as much as the rest of the world does. Then again, Japan's gone through its own phases - where everything American was cool. And they happen to use tidbits of our language even if they can't speak anything conversation-worthy, too.

People are people and they behave questionable no matter where they're from. If you don't like it, don't watch it. If someone's ranting at you about anime (or cars or football or hannah montana or twilight or whatever) and you don't want to listen... just tell them so and walk away. That simple. =/

(Random factoid you likely didn't know: Transformers? Yeah. It came from Japan, too. No. Not that new flashy live action stuff. The original ones. Like Armada.)

Personally, I think its a good thing that our cultures are getting intertwined. It brings international peace and good relations. Its rather important in this day and age with all the scary technology we have.

Well to be honest unless you're very good at that particular hobby or passion it's really hard to make a living out of it. What I've found is I've had to balance things out and maybe not pick something that I use to eat, drink, and dream of but still find interesting. It's about grounding yourself and finding that in reality it's a lot tougher in the real world. I still have goals, but they're much more realistic these days.

As for kids, I haven't had any of my own. I have step kids, and they came as a packaged deal. I wouldn't fathom bringing kids into the picture until I had the financial stability to provide for them and the drive to do so. I know how stressful and time consuming parenting is. I get to dabble in it during the summer months, and I do spend time with them regularly on the weekends during school. I've been talking about the possibility of having one of my own flesh and blood, but to be honest the more I think about it the more I think I'll never truly be ready to handle it.

And I would never push my broken dreams onto any kid. I try to spike interest and open them up to new ideas. I hope that my step daughter's curiosity has peaked for trying new things while she's in school and has the chance. I won't force her to join band, but I try to positively talk about it to her and hope she gives it good thought. Her mother's expectations are kind of shallow and lacking, and I truly feel she's trying to live vicariously through her and I'm not going to add to that.

I still have my hobbies and passions to this day, even with real life and currently unemployed. I just prioritize...and no I don't make any money off of what I love...I spend a lot on it though...

lol I think I remember watching that on YouTube when someone sent the link to me on Gaia saying that it was hilarious xD

I do have a lot of trouble listening to some Japanese singers/artists speaking English though...I remember watching a video with Hyde in it and he was screaming, "Do you like crabs?" (or something along the lines of that) and "I like crabs!" to the audience, but it sounded very much like "Do you like crap?" and "I like craps!" >___>;; I can't really understand Gackt when he was speaking English either...but then I've always had trouble listening to people speaking English who have accents...or just about any language, really. Dx

There are definitely Asians who can speak perfect English despite not learning it as their mother tongue though. I envy them. xD

Hmm, this is a hard one for me, I was like, five when I first started watching Anime, but at the time I didn't even know what it was. (Digimon)

I owe a lot to the time when I freaked out and learned as much as I could about Japan, so along with the shame of calling random people 'san' and 'baka' I learned how to draw, which has become a passion of mine. It also helped me to make friends (people who have also grown out of the Kawaii stage)

I can't say that people adding random Japanese to their sentences doesn't bother me unless they have horrific grammar or spelling. (But then I would still be pissed at them, even with the randomly inserted words. Basically, people need to learn their own language before they add another language in.

So that kinda influences people these days. A lot of Japan tv hosts that are female have the voice that I'd see some bright anime have going "kawaiiiii <3"

I still hate weeaboos but the Twitards are far more annoying imo since most female weeaboos are also twitards, so I direct my jeering towards them now.

I've met a few of them, a friend of mine sadly became something like that when Naruto came out over here in the UK.

It saddened me as I'd been into Anime and Manga for about 5 years before that and had been trying to get him into some animes like Ghost in the Shell and Dominion Tank police, at least some Battle Angel Alita, but no- apparently the only good anime out there was Naruto.

Saying that, he's not overly obsessed, which is why we're still friendly.

Sound advice, but you're only suppose to speak in English here.

I must say very wordy reply in Japanese too, so I'm assuming either you're Japanese yourself or you've studied it pretty hardcore. Kind of strange you replied in Japanese though... ^^;

Well, unfortunately I have a friend like that as well. She's recovering little by little, though. When I first met her she would never stop talking about Inyu Yasha and using Japanese words out of context. With prodding from her friends and family, I think she'll be alright eventually. She still uses words out of context sometimes, but not as often as she used to. She also watches a greater variety of anime and reads other genres of manga.

I myself used to say "kawaii" a little too much when I was in ninth grade, but luckily I realized that I felt really silly saying it, so I stopped.
Something new and exciting like anime can become addictive for younger viewers and I think that all they want to do is immerse themselves in it as much as possible, so using Japanese words becomes natural. I agree that it becomes scary when you start using them out of context at seventeen and up, however.
