Yes. I grew up with kids and stuff, and man, were they annoying.

Twenty-six?

Wait. People actually think rape=love? D: That's not cool, man. Gravitation was my first series and I got into it because I had a friend who loved it. As I mentioned to some other people in another post, I stopped reading Gravitation because it was so melodramatic. Kind of like a soap opera. Fanfiction's like that too, actually. It's not so hard to find good ones, but quite the majority have things like rape, whiny angst, dead parents, and all that kind of stuff, and you're looking at it, going, "Why would you even WRITE this kind of thing? I'm disturbed." So yeah.

Close, but no XD

Unfortunately, rape = love is a really big theme in the boy love genre. You'll find it in a lot of manga. The dominant partner very often forces the other into sex. There's a lot of "no!" and "But your body says yes. You want it!" Going on there. And I hate it. As if it's not bad enough that it's there, some fans really latch onto it! It's unfortunate prominence seems to give people ideas that that's how it's supposed to be done. Rape is rape! It's not sexy or cute and it sure as hell doesn't lead to romance. Unless it's some twisted Stockholm Syndrome version of romance. >_<

Gravitation is probably one of the worst ambassadors for the genre! But it's a lot of people's on ramp to Boy Love. I didn't read the manga. I watched the anime and that was enough. The characters were pretty interesting and completely fucked up. Yuuki and Shuichi's relationship is so damn unhealthy. I think both characters need to grow up before they can be together, if they ever can. But that twisted romance gives impressionable fans certain expectations of what they're looking for in BL.

And it's not just the young fans. I've decided that the Viewfinder series by Ayano Yamane is like Gravitation's spiritual big brother. It's loaded to the gills with rape and non-consensual sex and that is supposed to lead up to love. The older fans eat it up. It's one of the most active fandoms for a BL book I've come across. People tend to do more fics for general series like Naruto or Bleach, but Viewfinder has a fairly active fandom and I'm sort of resentful actually. Why should this series, this series full of rape and mind games, be so popular when there are far better BL series to do fanfiction for. :illgetu:

Oh my gosh. You're thirty! D: I feel so young.

I would honestly like Gravitation more if Yuki and Shuichi's relationship is supposed to be fucked up. It's one of the ideas I'm using for a novel I want to write, where these two guys get into a relationship and their infatuation with each other is downright unhealthy. No rape, though, don't worry about that. Viewfinder, I don't think I want to read. What BL mangas do you recommend, though?

Not 30. But a good eleven years older than you my dear. I guess close enough. 30 is death right? XD

Viewfinder is pretty, but just a messed up as Gravitation...more so really. I mean the first sex scene is nothing but bondage, rape and object penetration. The kid gets raped a few more times by other people. Then he moves into reluctant uke non-con territory and then suddenly he's in love. =/

As for recommendations, there's Kizuna. Kodaka Kazuma is one of the pioneers of the genre. It took me a little while to get used to the art in Kizuna but eventually the story sucks you in. It's supposed to be a story about Ranmaru and his lover Enjouji, but Enjouji's half-brother Kai and his love for his considerably older former caretaker and big bad yakuza kind of steal the show.

Haru wo Daiteita (was released as Embracing Love) by Youka Nitta is another classic. The art is gorgeous and the story is good. It's about two male porn stars, yes, porn stars, who end up falling in love and try to navigate the world of real actors. It's cute because they're very...human. They do a lot of stupid things in their relationship, hurting each other's feelings, making amends, growing deeper in love. It's one of my favorites.

Unfortunately, both titles were licensed and released by BeBeautiful, a offshoot of CMP, which has gone out of business, so the books are hard to find and fairly pricey when you do. So scanlations would be your best bet. Both are mature titles.

Fumi Yoshinaga's Antique Bakery is not BL, not really. But it is about a gay baker with demonic homosexual powers XD He can make any man fall in love with him, except for the first man who ever rejected him, the man he now works for. Toss in a former boxing champ, an incompetent servant/friend and lots of cake and it's just fun. It makes you hungry, it's sweet and human and a really good read.

Fumi Yoshinaga has quite a few other books out like Solfege and The Moon and the Sandals and honestly you can pick up any one of them and it will be a great read.

Not really sure what your interests are. I mean, if you like pretty art or wacky stories, if you want smuttyness or not. Because I can keep going XD

@For-chan: So you're twenty-eight, okay. Well, those all sound good. I don't mind some bondage, but on the first night! D: It's moving too fast. Non-con, though, yeah, I have a problem with. I'm going to have to look those up them. I'm fond of Song of the Wind and Trees, which does feature some sexual abuse, though not between the main couple, thank goodness.

Most things are ok in moderation. I can deal with someone tying someone's hand. But full on bondage and rape. Ugh. No thank you. There's just too much non-con in yaoi sometimes and I hate how fans will pick up on that and put it in their work, because they think that's how that stuff goes. It's monkey see, monkey do and not enough monkeys are stopping to, yanno, not be monkeys! >_<

Hahaha. Monkies. Mmm, I don't mind characters tying each other up either. That's pretty fun. Yeah, moderation is always the key. Like, you don't want anything too graphic, you know, or it's going to put its reader off.

And speaking of graphic, the chick who draws Gravitation scares me. She draws doujinshi for her own series, which is pretty cool...but she has such awful stories! She has this manga called Gamerz Heaven and she did a doujin for it which essentially turns into a giant gang bang with lots of raping and penises and fluids. And worst of all, she has this fascination with cross sections of the "action". Like anybody wants to see the insides as Tab A goes into slot B? And then the guy goes crazy and kills all the rapists. It was insanity. Her doujinshi are scary. I think there's a Gravi one where Tatsuha rapes his big brother. -_-

OH MY GOSH.

I WOULD TOTALLY READ THAT, IF ONLY TO LAUGH AT IT.

I mean, I would have nightmares. ;_;

Yes, it's quite nightmare worthy. Not all of the Gravitation Remix doujinshis are horror fests, but it's a mixed bag. Just stay away from her Gamerz Heaven doujin whatever you do. And as if the whole rape part wasn't bad enough, the guy who gets raped used to be a dog, so it's kinda sorta bestiality...and he was in love with his master who let the people do things to him. So sad! So damn sad ;_;

Forgive me for having a heart of stone, but this is utterly hilarious. Except for the rape, which is, quite frankly, just disturbing. Bah, I don't care. What are your views on shoujo-ai, For-chan?

I'm perfectly fine with girl love, I just hardly read any because I don't like hardly any of it! There are very few girl love manga that I like and it's a rare story that I enjoy. I think I'm even more pickier about girl love than I am about boy love.

The thing is, I haven't really read any. I've heard of a few good series, but yeah, like you, I'm really picky. Actually, I just haven't read manga in a while, that's probably why.

I prefer a good femmeslash fanfiction to girl love manga though. I often take issues with how the Japanese characterize females. I just like females with more spine I suppose.

Yeah. I haven't been watching as much anime lately because I've been reading fanfiction instead. XD I was following all sorts of series and then I just lost interest. Even though one of them was really slashy! I was afraid one of the guys was gonna die and stopped watching ^_^;;

And you know, subtext = buttsex! That always did amuse me XD

And frankly, subtext tends to get waaaaaaay more fanworks than flat out canon relationships. It's craziness, but good for slash and BL fangirls. We feed each other fics. :drool:

That does explain a lot of fandom-and I just got that now. Subtext and buttsex have the same letters! Haha. Funny. I feel so slow on the uptake. XD You haven't seen Deviantart or Fanfiction.net, have you? Good gosh, the fanfiction, it's all based on the slash. The fangirls always squeal when there're two guys who are seemingly close. Indeed. There's a clever subtext = buttsex icon out there, but I don't have it saved XD

I've had a ff.net account for 8 years and devart for 6 XD I don't actually read much on ff.net because there's so much crap there O_O So so much! And some of it's mine XD

I have a deviantart account, but I never use it. I only use it to view pictures that can't be viewed otherwise, and to tell artists, "Hey, I think this picture is good."

I don't have a fanfic account. I don't write fanfic. XD What do you write?

I have some stuff on my devart account, a fic, a poem, a photo of my dog...and some random phallic doodles, like a cactus and some yaoi corn XD

I've written quite a lot of fanfiction over the years. All sorts of stuff, almost all of it yaoi or slash. Mostly in anime fandoms but I've done a good dose of slash as well.
