I don't think there is an age limit. I started Gaia when i entered high school, and I'm about to graduate college. I realize that some of my students might end up being on the same site as me, but that's not stopping me from having fun in my free time.

I really hate the social concept of an 'age limit'. It's like 'so, the moment I turn 18, i'm supposed to just hate everything I used to like, because it's "kiddish"?'
... I get flak for playing video games, and collecting figures (and watching anime... etc, etc) and i'm only sixteen.
I think it's just really ingrained into our culture.
But to answer your original question, I don't believe any age is too old.
Also, here's some food for thought: Would your perception of a 30 + year old on avatar/pet sites change depending on gender?
Hope i'm not too off-topic here...

I don't think you can really be too old, as long as you're not being all creepy-like. I joined Gaia back in 04 when I was 15. I had a friend who was 24 at the time, so he's in his 30's now and a moderator.
I runa guild there and I have a lot of older members. We just kinda find each other and stick together like an awesome family.

Saying someone is too old for avatar sites is like saying you're too old to have hobbies, because that's all it is; a simple hobby that's a great way to relax and unwind in your spare time.
Menewsha is basically just the same as watching TV, only more sociable and more creative.

I really don't believe that age should have anything to do with whether or not someone plays on sites like this. Or any other kind of game, for that matter. Some of the funnest people to talk to are the older people. I'm 27, have married, divorced, am currently engaged, and have a (almost) four year old daughter. One of my best friends is my mom, and she's 49. Another was my grandpa, who sadly passed away 1 1/2 years ago, at the ripe old age of 81. Like other people have said, as long as older people aren't pretending to be younger, hitting on, flirting with, or otherwise harrassing the younger people, why shouldn't they be allowed to have fun and socialize? They're still people, and interacting with others is a universal human need, regardless of your age. Just because they are older doesn't mean they've surpassed those needs. After all, they're still human, and they shouldn't be discriminated against.

I'm 25, and I agree with DawnStar, as long as the older people on the site aren't doing anything wrong or creepy, what's the harm? In real life I have friends of all ages, from 10-74, so I don't see it as being any different online. And, there are benefits to having older members around. When you have a problem, a REAL problem that you can't talk to your parents about, or feel uncomfortable asking your counselor about, an ambiguous face of an older avatar site member might be able to help you.

I think you can be as old as you feel. Meaning that no matter what your age you can still have fun, including avatar sites. I don't think it's right to stereotype people by their age and say just because they are so old or young that they cannot do something they enjoy. If you think about some of the administrators, mods, etc are in their 30-40s for sites like Menewsha and Gaia. I'm sure they enjoy their job and enjoy participating on the site as well. So think twice before stereotyping people because of their age.

i really don't think age should matter. As long as you're old enough to type coherently, but mature without being really dumb out it, I think anyone can join. I mean, anyone can find forums like this fun. And even if you don't talk in the forums, you can still play the games, right?

I believe that people are not too old to play anything. It could be avatar communities, video games, computer games or whatever. Avatar sites are fun! I rather play here than mess around on Myspace *shutters* or facebook. >.<

i don't think i'll be coming on sites like these after i turn 25, but that's just me. i personally don't mind ages as long as it doesn't get creepy...like 40 year olds hitting on minors. it's happened to me before. o.o

Well. I've been off for a while, so thought I'd catch up on the posts I've missed....
I'm happy to hear that the general opinion is that you can't be too old to be on avatar sites, although I had to laugh about Kaze-Bear's post about the person on their death bed trying to get that last item. Sounds like something I'd do... =)
I missed chatting with everyone... glad I'm back...
Oops... forgot to ask- if I'm not too old- about riding along if JellySundae got Brad Pitt in the car... lol

@ aki kisaki - True it's weird being hit on by older people, but people don't generally 'flirt' here that I know of... quite a lot of menewshans are married... heck there are quite a few grandmas too =3
@ Lynnzette - ^^" sadly... I probably will be too lol

I don't really think there is an age limit on these sites, as not everyone goes on here to dress up an avatar. Some people go on avatar sites for the people and discussions, and there is no age limit for that!

I agree with the posters who say that being "too old" is kind of an immature thing to think.
Personally, I think it's all about attitude. If you're a creepy 49 year old trying to pick up kids on a website, it's not your age at fault, it's your behavior. The same creepy behavior is inappropriate whether you're 1 or 100.
I'm 25 and I have a 4 month old daughter and have been married for over 3 years (and together in a relationship with my husband for much longer than that).
I still like to talk to people online to unwind after a long day.
Also, it's nice to be able to mentor and give advice to people who are younger than me who are looking for perspective.

I'm 20 and I don't think I'm too old for this, but I believe the normal age is from 11/12 to 15/16.
Anyways, if you like something you should enjoy it regardless of your age :)

I don't think there's an age limit but at the same time, you shouldn't be on an avatar site trying to pick up teens or pre-teens. I think the oldest person I've ever talk to was a woman in her thirties on Gaia that had three children. However, she was super sweet and we became really good friends. So age really shouldn't matter... as long as you're not some creeper. (Though I imagine 13 year olds wanting to cyber is kinda bad to, huh?)
My mom, who is in her late 40s, plays Pet Society. Of course, she only has facebook friends that she knows so it's not like she's interacting with strangers.
However, my two best friends play Attack on Facebook and they both befriended a 50 year old professor from California because they thought he was really funny and sarcastic in the game. So even though he's old, they don't really have a problem with his age because they still find him to be funny and cool.

Forums in general shouldn't have an age limit. I mean, there's still discussion and threads based on things that can attract any age. It's kind of like banning an old lady from Starbucks because the setting is too young.

I don't know if there should be a 'cut off' age. I'm just getting out of highschool, and I love being able to get advice from older users.
I think that the more mature the users, the more I enjoy the websites that I'm at. So hey! The older the better!

Why does there have to be some arbitrary age limit set on people enjoying any game or web site? Why are avatar sites any different than playing "Scrabble", for example? Or is there some upper age limit on board games of which I'm currently unaware?
Seriously, part of the good thing about these sites is each of us has to take the other on the face value of our avatar and on how we present ourselves in the forums - we judge and make friendships on the type of people we are and on which we portray ourselves to be - Not on superficial things like skin color or whether or not somebody has gray hair.
Can somebody suggest they are something other than they are not on these sites? Yes, but that's a tough trick to pull off after a while (unless you're a very good lier) and a little common sense on each of our parts goes a long way to stemming off any "difficulties" that may arise out of any "less than noble and forthright" situation which may arise. And I know for a fact that the moderators on this site and a couple other "smaller" avatar sites do their absolute best to keep the players safe and keep the trolls out.
... so why the ageism that always seems to raise it's ugly head on these sites?
