While I don't remember everything about the book version of "Ella Enchanted" EXACTLY, I do agree with you that the movie wasn't close to the book in the slightest. Well, what I remember of it, anyway. But the books that I feel were ruined the most were "The Princess Diaries", and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". With "The Princess Diaries", Disney changed nearly everything about it- they got rid of a bunch of characters, made Mia's self-centered grandmother a nice person, and.. well, the list goes on. And with "Half-Blood Prince", they took out the whole plot about discovering who "The Half-Blood Prince" is (WTF. It's the book's title. Why did they get rid of this?!), removed half of the Pensieve scenes, added scenes that will make parts of the next movie make no sense, and in favor of what? Emphasizing the 'romantic comedy' bits in the novel that only make up a small percentage of the novel. >_<;. Honestly, I think the Harry Potter movies have only went downhill since this director took over. :(.

I'm torn between AI and Eragon. Eragon was just terrible. Seriously I watched it and the Digimon song came on in my head.

AI because it was NOTHING like the short story it was based on. Supertoys Last All Summer.

But by that vein so was the Island terrible. Because it wasn't anything like "The Lottery" it was based on.

So would Howl's Moving Castle (both were good but lets face it the movie was almost nothing like the book), as well as Ella Enchanted, and The Princess Diaries stuff. Come now. She stays with Micheal through the 5 books I've read about. The movies were good but nothing like the book so that I think qualifies them for the worst conversion list.

Bram Stoker's Dracula for certain.
Now, granted I've only seen the sixties b&w
movie of it, but my god,
It really wouldn't matter if they made the movie now.
Dracula is just too in depth, you know?
They couldn't even get Harry Potter right in movies,
how could they ever dream of
doing Stoker's work?
It was and always will be a complete catastrophe.

@Wisdom: Well, I suggest trying the Francis Ford Cappola (I hope I'm spelling his name right) version. My sister was really into vampires in high school and she loved that movie. I've read the book, and as far as I can tell, the Cappola movie isn't that far of the mark. The acting is also pretty good.

@Kikite: Will it surpise you to know that I agree? The actors they chose for the movie and the effects are laughable. My god, you can see the conveyer belt they used in the baseball scene!

I'd have to say. . . though I haven't seen it yet, I bet Cirque Du Freak in movie form is going to suck. I love the book series a lot but I don't have high hopes for the movie they made.

I haven't too many to choose from, but i've always thought 'Eragon' was...awful. I had none of the feeling i got from the book, and the actors were a little unsatisfactory =/

Blood and Chocolate. One of my favorite books ever, and then the movie takes the entire ending and turns it around. good guys become bad guys, and vice versa. i've never been so angry at a movie in my life.

However, the worst I have made the misake of watching would be the Eragon movie. The Inheritance series is one of my favourites, but the movie for Eragon was just terrible. It thrashed the plot.
I totally agree I was excited for weeks when I found out about it. Gathered all my friends and went to see it. i wanted to leave at the opening credits I could tell it was going to be that bad. We didn't even reconize some of it and we all decided that we'd never watch that or any other Inheratance movie made by the same director

I'd have to say Eragon (even though it's been said before), Twilight series, I'm going to agree on Prince Caspian... however I have to put in one that wasn't a movie, but became a mini-series. The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. WORST book to TV transition EVER! The TV version, The Legend of the Seeker, is fine by it's self but once you start comparing, it gets really bad. I think the best episode so far comparing with the book was the first episode... after that it goes down hill.

Yes. I hated, HATED what they did to Gabriel. I think I've already mentioned it in here, but I can't say it enough: Blood and Chocolate the movie sucked royally.

I absolutely hated the change over of The Dark is Rising: The Seeker. It didn't remind me very much of the book, and they made the main character too angsty for me. Plus they didn't even let on at the end of the movie that the story continues, considering there are other books in the series....

I completely agree. And the whole magical twin brother thing?!!!! Not to mention, it took me ages to even find a theater showing it in the first place, and then it turned out to be not worth it at all. Worst! conversion ever!

Oh yeah, I agree with Ella Enchanted for sure! :(
Also, the movie version of the Witches, and by the looks of it, the new Dreamworks How to Train your Dragon movie! That book was part of my chiiiildhood.

Edit: Oh, and the worst of all: Disney's Alice in Wonderland. :gonk: The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan are pretty damn awful as well!

one book to movie conversion i do not like is for 'Inkheart'. In the 'Inkheart' movie they had made sometime last year, the main characters were sucked into the book....but that didn't happen until the second book 'Inkspell'. They just totally took stuff from the second book and threw it into the movie....i hated that.

I don't watch many movies, but I would have to agree with everyone on Eragon. The Golden Compass was also one that was really dissapointing. My teacher read it as a class novel and took us to see the movie when it came out. I cringed all the way throught it. It really sucked since I really expected something awesome.

hmm personally I have a hard time thinking of a bad book to movie conversion since i am that type of person who can see sometimes why they change plots. the thing i dislike is when they pick a bad actor to play the part of really good characters.

though i can name the best movie conversion I think I have seen that was Bram Stoker's Dracula. i think they made it better than the book but thats me.

the worst wellll.... was "cloudy with a chance of meatballs" the movie had nothing ta do with the book.

Any comic book movie really. There are only a few that do well.

Wolverine's origins was such a joke.

I agree with everyone about Eragon. The Golden Compass also really sucked. My teacher had our class read the book and took us to see the movie when it came out. The only thing it had going for it was the special effects. >.<

I watched it with my brother and sister, and the entire time I was complaining about how they had messed up the plot. They made fun of me for days because that's the first time I've ever done that.

Although, objectively, the movie wasn't that horrible on it's own. It's the fact that they completely redid the book that gets my goat. I don't mind slight changes to adapt a book to a 2 hour movies, but a complete redo where the only thing the same about it is the name of the characters ticks me off.

Twilight. Looked like a shoddy home movie, with bad "whoosh" noises to show them running fast.
Eragon. They thrashed it in so many way's I'm not even going to list them.
Angels and Demons. What happened to the complex plot?? Is this the simple version for simple people??
Harry Potter 3,4,5 (they kind of cleaned up their act with 6)

I Hates the Hatchet and Eternal. ughh so stupid! I threw eternal across my room; it didn't make any sence and the author couldn't write at all. And I was forced to read the Hatchet D: fml

well, about Legend of the Seeker being inacurate, making a tv show of a book is completely different from making a movie of a book. Of course they're going to change stuff and add filler, because it's supposed to last for several seasons, not just 2 hours. A lot of the stuff they changed though, i thought could have stayed more similar to the book and not taken away from it. But pretty much every show based on a book is LOOSELY based on the book, not like it would be if it were a movie instead.
