Recently I've been seeing Barbie Doll commercials with a new jingle, the melody of which I recognized.
It's the melody of Aqua's hit "Barbie Girl."
Does anyone else find it odd or ironic that the new jingle was a song that led Mattel to sue Aqua because they argued the song turned Barbie into a sex object?

While we're at it, and because I don't want this thread to die quickly :), what else have you encountered in your life that you thought was odd or ironic?

okay, I haven't seen the commercial with that song, but Barbie has always been "what an american girl should be like" and has always been a sex object. It's just that kids don't realize exactly what it is.

Well, now-a-days sex is a bigger part of our society than it was back then. By that I mean it's more acceptable to hear about and see within movies. Even 10 years ago you didn't see hald the stuff you do now in movies. Most movies rated PG-13 today would have been rated R back then.

I watch the today show every morning and sometimes they pair songs and segments that just don't make sense if you know what the song is really about.
I remember one time in particular when they were talking about something to do with dogs and the background music was Modest Mouse's "Wild Pack of Family Dogs". It seemed a little strange to me because I was familiar with the lyrics which aren't really about well... happy family dogs. XD
I wonder if they have a song search engine and if they're looking for something say.. dog related they can just type in "dog" and it will pull up a list of songs with that word in the lyrics and then pick something that sounds catchy. They have so many segments every day I can't imagine trying to pull together all those songs and images.
Sometimes I wonder if they do it on purpose. :)

To say nothing of how I haven't seen a movie rated towards kids that was rated G since I can't remember when. And that includes Disney movies.
I guess it's partly because I remember the original song and bought the CD. I also can not imagine Mattel thinking that it'd be a good idea to use a song that they once thought so offensive that they sued the artist who made it.

It's not so much odd as just per marketing strategy. After all, they got the case thrown out on them, so they figured if you can't get money by suing the people who made it, use it to get money.
It's not odd, it's just slimy.

I find it odd in a way. I think the barbie girl song is funny but it is crude and not for kids. I dont like the idea of it being barbies new jingle. I love kids and I think they should be safe from such things.
I think its odd and wrong that when me and my hubby went to see jennifers body at the movies there were young children no older than 10 also there watching a movie about a demon possessed girl eating her classmates. Now I dont know about you but that is horrible. I would never let a child of mine watch such a movie. Its horrible and those parents should be ashamed to let there child watch such a thing.

I saw that commercial the other day and I almost choked on my own spit. I couldn't believe that Mattel had dared to use that song. But then...Mattel/Barbie has been getting very risqué lately. But, no, you're not the only one that noticed that and had a wtf? moment.

Has anyone else noticed that mattel has been releasing more dolls of african descent lately? 3 at once is a first for them. Usually its just one african one asian and a massive collection of white dolls a year. Really makes you wonder what kind of trouble they got in recently to do something like that.
As far as using the barbie girl toon, they probably payed out the ass to use that tune.

I have to agree, that is a little bit on the odd side, infact I didn't even notice that 'till you mentioned it lol.
I'd have to say a odd thing I have seen, are gym like thing near certin resturants. Example: Dick's wings and things, right next to a Curves.
There were others but I can't remember what they were at the moment

I don't think it that they got in trouble, I think they're just trying to appeal to more girls. I don't mean to make that sound racey (I'm totally not), but when you are a little girl (like 5 years old, the common age for Barbie loving girls) you want dolls that look like you. So if you are white you want white dolls and if your black you probably want black dolls. It's getting to the point where the lack of more diverse toys is just ridiculous, so Mattel might just be looking at it like that. But of course I don't know for sure, I'm only assuming.

LOL Oh that's hilarious. XDDD
I'm an adult, so all this I just pass off, maybe giggle about it. I leave the worryings and the pitchforks to those that are raising little girls. XD; But yes, I do agree with the irony of it all.
And my respect for Mattel when down the crapper a loooooong time ago and with the "Barbie Girl" thing... that's a slime tactic. Good going, Mattel. Good going.

i think Barbie may have always been some what of a sex object. i mean, look at the way she's built!! legs that make up over 50% of her height, almost no body, huge chest...really, no real person would look like that.
i've noticed that Barbie isn't as popular as she was when i was a kid tho. i think its cuz they're coming out with so many other dolls that are a lot better. but then, those dolls don't last very long. they go down in popularity after a few years or less, and Barbie still comes out on top.

Oh my gosh, I know exactly what you mean! I thought that I hadn't heard the commercial correctly the first time, but upon second exposure I was right. It definitely disturbed me a bit considering the original song and all of its...connotations.

@BinkaKitty
I read somewhere that if Barbie were real she'd be something like eight feet tall and have to crawl on all fours because her body is so out of perportion that it can't hold itself up properly without appearing seriously disfigured.
Could you imagine an eight foot Barbie crawling towards you??
F***ing creepy.

I thought that was strange too. the first time i saw it i was like what the heck! and now it bothers me, because i used to really like barbie and i wouldn't want my little girls running around humming that tune. wonder why they decided to do that.

Haven't seen that commercial yet.. haha
But, it always bugged me that their old jingles were like "Be who you wanna be, B-A-R-B-I-E, Barbie Girl" and I'm just like "So.. I wanna be Barbie?"
Edit- I seem to remember reading somewhere that Babrie was invented by some lady after coming back from some country in Europe (or maybe she lived there; I don't remember) and she had come across these sort of like sex dolls but not exactly, but they were for men. It gave her the idea for Barbie. But what I thought was really messed up was she named Babrie after her daughter Barbara, and Ken after her son Kenneth... It was like 3ish years ago at least that I read this, so I'm probably messing some of it up, but I remember that the idea was taken from some little sex-like-doll for men.

tch! yeah....right up there with the "parents" who think its okay to bring a baby to the theatre! not only is it not good for the kid in all areas no matter the rating of the movie, but....HELLO! trying to watch a movie without the sounds of talking crying or babbling, not to mention any sound the baby might make. am i right?! get a clue ppl. get a babysitter. otherwise just wait till it comes out on dvd, video on demand, and whatnot. besides, if u wanna get ur baby to watch a movie....baby eitstein is the way to go. good grief. sometimes i think that common sense just died somewhere back in the 60s. :sarcasm:
anyway, on the barbie note....yeah. i'm glad they used the aqua song. just that bit fits better than the revised army slogan of be all u can be: "Be who you wanna be, B-A-R-B-I-E, Barbie Girl". and like it's been mentioned...misproportioned much? but really i've noticed that barbie's waist is widening a bit more, that or it's been toned down from the deformatiy caused by corsets in the medieval era. and she's also had a bit of a bood reduction since i was a kid. now she's more like a slightly more developed 8 foot tall skipper. XD

Songs are often recut and used without attention to their original theme and intent- consider the uses of Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah, most notably in Shrek, as a solid example of this.
Nevertheless, it takes a special sort of irony to take a song mocking living fake and Barbie and turn it into a supporting piece for such.
