I don't really think that males can get away with more. Of course if a female were to do some actions that males often do it would be viewed differently but as long as she were to conduct this action in a thought out manor it would be seen as being just as funny.
For the most part it is even since females would have to be more cautious to preform acts that males can get away with at almost any time but we can avoid trouble much better than a male would.

In my family, at least part, men aren't expected to do much. They don't cook, do the dishes, clean, etc etc. They might remember to hold the door open for you. My worst beef is that my brother can stay up all night and sleep all day and no one cares, if I do it I'm considered weird and unhealthy. Gripe Gripe Gripe

Certain guys can get away with things from to what I have seen. I have moved to a state that is crazy about football (Arkansas -_-). What really annoys me here is that guys in the high school football team can get away with almost everything. Big, "cool" football player brings in an loaded gun to school? Only got a weak scolding. A normal kid who did graffiti for a prank for some senor event? Got expelled. This is the most annoying part about living in this state.

I think it's probably pretty even between the sexes. There are things women can get away with more easily and there are things that men can get away with more easily.

Personally, I wouldn't change being a woman for anything. I think there's a lot of pressure on men, while as a woman, I've never really felt any pressure to do or be anything other than what I'm willing to. I see where women are put upon to be a "good" mother and the perceptions of a "good" mom are pretty harsh, but I've never worried about others perceptions of me as a mom, so it doesn't affect me. At the same time, there is a lot of pressure on men to be "men", you know, manly, tough, self supporting, that shoulder to cry on and be supported by. So even there, it comes out about even.

@Leenalia: If you think MEN get away with abuse, think about this: a man cannot even really report abuse to himself from a woman without it affecting others' perceptions of him as being a "weak" and "wimpy" man-and it DOES happen, probably a lot more than we know about.

@Infinitys Echo Those are all fantastic points. A man getting abused by a woman is socially ignorable, and it is definately something that is ridiculed on large.

I haven't read the previous comments in their entirety, so I don't really know if it's been covered, but I think that a huge problem in the who Male/Female sexist situation is sleeping around. If a man has sex with 5 women in a week, his friends will applaud and praise him most definately. The man would brag about this as a huge achievement. However, if a woman were to do a similar activity, she would be largely labelled as a slut or whore, and doing so would be considered a major social faux pas! She would be forced to hide this information closely, in order to avoid public hatred! I hate this situation, but it's the world that we live in.

So that me, Iggy, a man, talking about sexism to women. :D

I just think males get away with too much now adays its like "what the heck is going on?!" I agree with some of the earlier posts. I've had to deal with my brother getting to do whatever he wants around the house while I'm stuck doing dishes and cleaning at times. What aggrivates me is that when I tell this to my father he says 'well your a girl, your suppose to do those things'
Honestly its enough to make me just scream at times haha. Apart from that I've seen many guys play around with girls and be deemed a 'hero' The standards for men and women are so different its practically not even funny half the time.
Oh well I dont mean to drag on, nor am I saying that all guys are like that. Unspoken rule lol one tends to have loads of good guy friends but tends to go for that 'bad boy' persona.
I've just noticed, not saying its true for anyone. =3

Oh for sure.
My dad would not let me drink until I was officially old enough, not at family get togethers or otherwise.

My brother has been drinking since he was fourteen, guess who gave him his first beer?
Yup, that would be dad.

I know how you feel.
It's always that way at my school, Guys are the funny ones and the girls are "annoying" Even if they're doing the same things. :/

I find guys annoying and girls to be the funny ones.

I feel like the guys, no matter what, are only trying to impress some lady and make her laugh and like him. Never an innocent thought. -___-"

@AL3X - Yay, I'm glad someone knows exactly what I'm talking about!
I always enjoyed doing funny things in my high school - like going around putting up fake posters about zombie outbreaks or rick rolling my senior class. A lot of people enjoyed it but however, now that I'm at college it seems that people never really enjoy the girl who does silly things.

@Chouno: Since my dorm is co-ed, I see a whole lot of guys trying to get with girls. It irks me though when I see a guy try to a make a more innocent approach - like the guy who tells my room mate, "I made some tea, would you like some?" Maybe it was just so lame that irritated me. The sword fighting guys at least beat the crap out of each other while trying to get attention.

As a girl, I feel like guys can get away with a lot more things.

For instance, two guys in my dorm were fighting with plastic swords and everyone was laughing, enjoying the two guys go at it. However, I feel that if two girls were conducting in this activity - everyone would view them as being "attention whores" and probably not find this as funny.

I feel like the same thing would have happened this time I was at a movie theater and the movie was late coming on. Two male friends from the audience got up on stage and started amusing the crowd with jokes and other stunts. I once again feel that if either a girl and a guy did this, or two girls - people would find the girl or girls to be either more annoying or just doing it for the attention.

So, just a random thought that I'd like opinions on.
I'm not sure about these two situations, but I definitely think that guys can get away with way more than we can. If they burp or fart really loud, it's funny. If we burp or fart really loud, it's gross. Society has developed different standards for girls and guys. That's the way it has always been. :(

I've learned not to care about what people think of me.

Let's be honest, I'm not a hugely attractive girl.
I don't have a body that someone would die for (nor would I want one), and I do things sometimes that cause me to catch people's attention.
If someone calls me an "attention whore", I usually laugh at them and tell them that they're just complaining to get attention.
After that, people usually leave me alone.
Though, I am in college, so it's not too bad.

Indeed, the social norms in college are very different. People actually start growing up, becoming mature, and realizing what really matters in life! :O It's really nice. :)

Well, I have to say, reading this thread is food for thought to me.

I'm a guy with to many years under his belt and if someone had just come up and asked me who I thought got away with more guys or gals I would have said gals without a second thought.

Most of the ladies I have known always seemed to get to do tons of stuff I was never able to do. Either because their parents would allow it or their boyfriends/husbands would pay for it.

In love, women seem to hold all the cards and guys have to wait for the woman to okay every step that is taken.

I guess maybe it all comes down to the very old says "the grass is greener on the other side" but, having looked over all the post here; I now have a lot to think about.

Thanks for making me think :)

@aki kisaki - Can you recommend me to this college? The college I'm attending still feels like high school, just with more drinking and shorter classes. I'm very disappointed that I'm still around very immature people... and being able to drink or get drunk is not a sign of maturity.

@Fuzzyrat - I'm glad that you were able to gain a little knowledge out of this topic. I've also taken into account new things as well.

@Chouno - yes, Ponta is a girl xD I figured that having a male avi would draw some confusion but I wasn't too worried about it.

Hey now, Let's not be so judgmental, I don't get away with things so easily. :( If I was out playing with plastic swords then I'm "Immature." I believe it to be unfair that people can't just go out and have fun with out taking shit.
But I think girls get away with just as much.

once you get past freshman year, uc davis in CA isn't so bad. there are people who love to get drunk at every college. lol...it's just the way things are i guess. i know what you mean though. you would think all the drama would be gone, but no! it takes some people a year or two, but when they want to eventually fit in with the rest of the college population, they will shape up.

I think that males get away with a lot more, since they are guys, and it's "expected" of them to act rude, loud, 'n such. But if a girl were to do that, they probably wouldn't get away with it. I've seen a lot of guys get away with being the way they are "supposed" to be. I mean, I know that guys are more rowdy than girls. But why can't a girl do so???

But I think really it just all depends on the situation that you are talking about.

@ Laila Izuka

I totally think there's something to that.

Personally, though, I advocate people acting out. I want a person to be who they are, not change for the people around them.
It's unfortunate that -- oh, I just had a realization in my head and now understand the whole bias thing. T.T
It sucks that gals can't act more crazy too. It's some really fun stuff. We should fix it. >.>

It depends on the situation on who gets away with what.
There are many things a woman can get away with that a man can, and in reverse.
^^
I personally don't think men can get away with more, they just can get away with different things.

Girls can use their looks to get out of bad situations in 9 cases out of 10, guys can only do so in some cases. And of course, if you're sleeping with the right person, you can rob a company blind and someone else will take the fall for it.

Sex is one thing that allows humans to forgive each other for committing horrible atrocities. It's pretty funny.
