I have my old cards but I'm so glad I got out of this game, it took me a few years to realize that it would always be a constant financial drain and that skill takes a back seat to the ones that had the most money to buy the best cards.

not really bud. i mean, it still takes skill to use the cards you have in the most efficient manner and sometimes, be the most creative. it's only financially draining if your cards get banned. then u can just play specialized games, not the regular tourneys.

I will take your word for it, I've not been in it since ice age and i have no plans to pick it back up, 90% of my cards are banned or restricted now and i have better things to spend my money on. >:3

There are open tournaments (and classic tournaments!) that allow you to utilize your old cards for competition. I have been out of the tournament circuits for quiet a while myself. =p
But yes! They are a ridiculous financial strain when you're trying to assemble the newest cards for decks. I remember burning through almost 100-200USD a tournament weekly sometimes just for drafting competitions and busting new packs for deck materials. >_<

see? you dont have to be buying cards all the time. god, when i was in my MTG prime, the most i would spend was maybe 10 bucks for drafting tournies. almost all of the cards i ever had were either donated to me or i traded for. buying cards wasnt really an option

I didn't have as many friends playing as I would've liked so trading was not as high an option as you would think. I had a hard time trading most of the people I played in tournaments with as they took FAR less care of their cards than I did. I had a full time and part time job to feed the fix for YEARS. =p

Sadly I didn't have much of an option there either. =\
The high school I went to was a private lutheran consisted of a jr/sr high and had a total of 81 students....
Not only did we not have a games club, but MTG cards were banned from the campus because one of the teachers felt they were "of the devil" and she felt personally attacked by them.
The closest thing we had to a games club was a couple of my friends and I staying after school every day to play a year long risk game with our history teacher. >_<

o man, thats terrible. im really sorry to hear that. i mean, i always thought lutherans were more laid back(only because I AM lutheran, but i guess a school setting might be different). but hey, risk can be amazing. was it the class version or could u play like the LOTR version?

I played the original version. My dad still had his board from way back when and let me borrow it. All the army pieces were roman numerals! That version definitely came out before my time!

I played against that deck last night with my mono black deck. I had like 5 islands in play and he kept demolishing my swamps of I could get any in play. It was probably the least fun I have ever had playing magic.

I'm a very casual player. I play with decks me and my friends have constructed.
One is core set 2010 only. One is mainly slivers and so forth.
I've been playing for 10+ years. AKA over half my life.

Someone I know has a sliver EDH deck. It gets pretty nasty when all his slivers are in play buffing each other. DO any of you play the EDH format?

I looked it up.
I've never played that format, sorry.
Me and my friends play Group Magic games OF DOOM!
Or Two-Headed Giant.
It just depends on the number we have that wants to play. And who it is that wants to play. If it is some of the worse players-OF DOOM game. If a mix of okay and good-TWO HEADED GIANT!

EDH is a format where you play with a 100 card deck and you choose one Legendary creature to be your "General". Your general is set off to the side and you can cast him when ever you want as long as you have the mana, when he dies he doesnt go to the graveyard he goes back to his special spot. So youhave 99 other cards and you can only have 1 of each. It's a fun and interesting format.
