So, basically, I want a new game console. Last one I had was the gamecube. Haha, shows how actively I game...

Anyways, since I'm not an INTENSE gamer, and all I really am buying a console for is for Guitar Hero/ Rock Band and such, so which console is the better? What is the difference between PS 2 and PS 3? Do you think that the PS 2 will be obsolete any time soon, since I would like to buy the new releases of games without having to shell out another 300-400 bucks for the PS 3.

Or should I take a whole different route and buy the Wii? Or an Xbox?

PS2 has a really big library of games and has just about everything on it. That and I think PS2 is still a fairly popular system, which means that it won't die out for another few years. Granted, if you can find a model of PS3 that would play PS2 games, I'd say get that.

Haha, that's the problem for me. PS 3 should play PS 2 games as well.

I've heard that it's hard finding a PS3 model that will play all PS2 and PS1 games. That's my only gripe with it.

And yeah, all consoles go obsolete after a while, but I think PS2 will be around for a little bit longer. It may only be a year or two, but that's still enough time to play it and love it.
Plus, I think they're about $100 used in some stores.

The PS2 will certainly become obsolete. That's the life of a game console, they're all destined to die, as it would. The PS2, to its credit, has shown the greatest longevity of any console so far, I think. And as eCrink pointed out, the PS2 has an amazing library of games, which are only getting cheaper.

It's be cool if you could find a PS3 that is backwards compatible, but again like eCrink said, they're harder to find and the older model of the PS3 is being phased out. And while the newer models offer you more gigs for a lesser price, they won't play your PS2 games. D:

*exasperated sigh*
and here I was, thinking that PS3's could play PS2 games. And I kind of wish there weren't som unnecessary features on them...

In order of the best in my opinion:

PS2
Wii
Xbox 360

PS3 is still a waste of money.

I'd say it really depends on the kinds of games you want to play. The PS2 is a great console to get. I managed to snag a backwards compatible PS3, but it was waaaaay expensive considering it's not being made anymore. Works great, but it was a sizable amount of money to pay.

If you're not way into gaming, and not all "OMG I MUST HAVE THAT NEW GAME, LIKE, RIGHT NOW OMG" like I am (I know, I fail...), then go for the PS2! It's still a great system with an enormous library of great games.

Oh, and... I prefer the xBox 360 to the Wii simply because the XBox 360 has more games that I'm interested in on it. Namely titles like Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, and some other RPG titles like Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata. The Wii is great fun, but it has a limited library. Though it does have Rockband! XDD

So yeah. My vote for you is on the PS2. *nods*

....
Hrm, I asked around a bit, and in my opinion, the Wii sucks... pretty bad. I probably won't get the PS 2 (Though I do agree it is AMAZING~!! ) because I don't know when it will be extinct and no longer be able to play new Guitar Hero/ band hero/ Rock band games. PS 3 would be a waste of money for me....
...
Xbox 360 is in the lead. I tried it before, I have no qualms with it.

The first Ps3 model plays both Ps2 and Ps1 games. I'd say go with a Ps3, they're really cheap now. I have all three new gens, and the Ps3 is my favorite. Wii has a very poor selection of good games (depending on what kind you like.) and the Xbox 360 has so many problems. I had to send it in twice to be fixed because the Red ring of death, and now the new one is again having problems.

OMG PS3 is definately my choice its like having another hard drive for media purposes not to mention the games they have for it now are awesome. You can make the Ultimate media server by linking together couple/several ps3's. I could go on forever about the possibilities...... Yes, ps3 is definately worth the buy.

I'm guessing you know very little about researching technology. Other than the outstanding capabilities of the ps3; the ps2 and the xbox 360 have horrible bugs and flaws. In several cases xbox360's are returned to the manufacturer for overheating problems and game errors. Or if you're a die hard 360 fan and can't let it go, a large portion of people have to take them in for repairs within the first two years of purchase. As far as ps2 goes not only does it have several small but highly annoying bugs it is also soon to be outdated now that the ps3 is out. Its better to advance your technological tastes with the times rather than stay stagnant with a gaming system or even a computer system for too long.

Haha, yeah, I heard about the "Red Ring of Death". Right now, considering XBox 360 and PS3.

Though, if I get my license and finish my Grad Project, PS3 and Band hero for this girl.

Yeah, i'm more of a Playstation supporter, but the 360 has certainly entrigued me with its exclusives. But the Red Ring of Death really puts me off.

Oh Hatake... though it's not confirmed, there's talk of Sony adding the entire PS2 catalogue to the PSN. So that's mean you'd be able to buy and download any PS2 game and play it on the PS3. ... If this is true.
