Elo Schal had finally had enough. Going from town to town, having to leave the moment a stray gust of wind blew his hood back. No one ever believes the story behind his horns. Ever. His research had led him to the understanding that no magic drawn from his power source as a Warlock could ever hide his horns. He was tired of being called Oni and being attacked wherever he went. He was not a violent man; but he defended himself. He was not a social butterfly; but neither did he relish becoming a hermit because of a pair of 2" horns on his upper forehead.

His research finally turned up a possible source of aid. There was rumored to be a magical library of some repute at a castle on a hill (aren't they all on hills?) not terribly far from the last town he was run out of. Elo wrapped himself in his best travelling robe, pulling his long black hair so it peeked out on one side to distract the viewer from his forehead, pulled on his zephyr boots (because you never know when you need to walk on water for a few moments, especially where castles are concerned), hitched his pack over his shoulder and headed out.

He arrived at the base of the hill and looked at the castle with his second sight. Yes, plenty of magic there. Plus, the place looked deserted. With any luck he would just be able to walk in and take what he needed. Just to be sure, he sent a magical sensor, a disembodied ghostly eye, up ahead to scout it out.

When it got to the base of the castle, it suddenly winked out of existence. "Hmm. Either an automated defense or someone really doesn't want to be spied upon. Best be careful." he told himself as he walked up the winding road to the castle, one hand on his warlock's scepter under his cloak.

"Hmm." Elo studied the steep pathway up to the base of the castle, then looked behind him. It was nearly dark, and what were the chances anyone would see him anyway? He decided to chance the spell.

"Enrole a suficiência o espaço sob mim e carreg me a meu destino."The warlock's cloak billowed out and he silently glided up the side of the hill, not too high, so he wasn't seen from afar, until he reached the base of the castle. No drawbridge, but the doors looked formidable. And yes, the place still looked abandoned.

With a wave of his scepter he dispelled the flight spell and his zephyr boots almost touched the ground. That was their other benefit. The tiny near invisible clouds he tred upon never made any noise. He pulled on the door, which did not budge.

Drawing from his spells again he spoke loudly (because for some reason all opening spells must be boomed out, he'd never found a reason why), "Abra-me e deixe- passar para dentro."

Elo reeled from the backlash. That was one powerful warding spell! He prepared for a fight, because he knew that anyone capable of setting that spell would have detected his feeble attempt at breaking and entering...

Leiko looked up from her kifu when she felt a powerful tremor through the castle and its echo through her own body. This wasn't going to be simple, but then when was her life ever? She stood with a sigh and walked down to the castle gate.

The silk of her multi-layered junihitoe ruffled as she walked, the ornate clothing not weighing her down in the slightest. If she'd paid attention to human laws, she might have known that it had been outlawed to wear more than five layers of uchigi with a junihitoe. Leiko herself chose to wear thirty five, far outclassing that.

Most of her clothing was red--the outer clothes were, and even the nagabakama that she wore underneath which showed at the very bottom where the layers parted. A few of her uchigi, though, were stark white and cobalt blue; lending the image as the eyes travelled downwards of fresh blood spilt on pure white snow.

Her obi was mostly the same shade of striking cobalt, though it had been detailed with a colourful spray of hana-gurumi flowers to add a bit of colour to the otherwise two-tone outfit. A third shade was added inadvertently, spilling out from beneath that ornate obi--two elegant silvery grey fox tails.

Living so far in the North, Leiko was a silver or Arctic fox, rather than the more commonly seen red foxes. She was simple enough to spot for what she was, even if she had chosen to twine her tails sneakily around her waist. But for the moment, she was making the most of her Youkai appearance.

With an intruder at the door, this was precisely the time to be at her most demonic. She threw open the door and snarled outwards at whatever she might find there, her tails fluffed out behind her and her fangs bared in an expression that made her thoughts on visitors clear.

"Go away!"

Elo looked nonplussed at the source of the scream. Fangs, claws, and was that a tail or two he saw flashing behind her? "Could you at least hear me out before you send me away?" With a wave of his scepter, the warlock reestablished his flight spell and floated upwards slightly. And during the ascent, he flipped back his hood, revealing his horns as he did.

"I have a specific item that I am searching for. I don't have much in the way of payment outside of my services, but that is given willingly. I would like to be able to hide these horns of mine when I am among the mortals, and my magic doesn't seem to have any effect. Are you willing to give me an audience?"

He floated back a few feet and awaited her reply.

She narrowed her eyes at him, but sighed and turned away from the door in a flurry of silk and fur. She retreated back into the castle, pointedly leaving the door open for him to enter by. It wasn't worth it to her to argue with him, and since she didn't believe that she had the 'item' he was looking for...she figured he would get bored and leave of his own accord.

"I am heading to my library...you are welcome to follow. Shut the door behind yourself and either fly or take off your shoes." She was harsh, snappish, and curt. Although she would warm up with time, she was still at the moment a bit annoyed that he had tried to barrel in rather than entering politely.

"Of course. I can actually do both, because my zephyr boots don't technically touch the ground." Elo dispelled the flight spell once again and strode in, noiselessly behind her. "You're a Kitsune, am I correct? Even better. I know your folk are masters of disguise and that is what I need. Even if your library does not have what I need perhaps I could negotiate some deal where you'd teach me a technique or two..."

He kept up with her rather easily, since the boots were effortless to wear. "I didn't mean to be rude, but this place looked entirely abandoned. That may be your skillful illusions, or simple neglect, but if I can help, I am fairly good with tools and I have a few spells to patch things up as well." Elo wasn't usually so talkative but his conversational partner was doing little save striding directly towards the library and it seemed easier to fill the silence with speech than to proceed quietly.

She frowned, wrinkling her nose. "If your boots don't touch the ground, then you are flying. If you remove the boots, you will be walking. You cannot do -both-." But her confusion over the issue drew her out of her shell a bit, and she slowed her all but frantic pace down to a normal walking speed.

"My castle...It...is not neglected. I simply have more pressing matters than things of an aesthetic nature..." She didn't want to admit that it was falling apart around her, but her expression and her halting words as she lied did little for making it seem like she did indeed believe all was well. She -had- to know that she needed help with it.

"On the matter of my boots. Well, it can hardly be considered flying if I have to push off the ground with every step. Also, without the flight spell I have, if I fell from say, the top of this castle, I assure you, you would not see me do anything except fall. I don't wish to doubt the words of an obviously powerful woman such as yourself but... either you have some very good illusion skills or this castle is on the verge of falling in upon itself. I am sure I could shore it up in payment for whatever I find to aid me here..." He paused a bit, as she stopped in front of an impressive set of double doors. This was the library, he took it, but she hadn't opened the doors yet so he wasn't about to. Not considering the strength of the creature's defensive spells.

She listened half-heartedly, not really caring all that much about how he got around, just wanting him to find what it was he wanted and leave again. She stopped in front of the doors to the library, then reached out and slid one of the panels open. Inside, it was lined with rows upon rows of racks of scrolls. It also seemed to be the site of a massive temper tantrum.

Black and white go stones littered the floor, and even one broken stone pot was on the floor near the wall it had been thrown into. Most of the scrolls were still where they belonged, but some of them had been taken out and thrown about the room. One corner of the library seemed to have been set on fire, though the fire had been put out somewhat quickly and only the ends of the scrolls were burned.

Tucked away in one corner of the room was the low goban on which Leiko had been studying, and one of the burned scrolls was set neatly nearby. A tea set was waiting for her, and she returned to it blandly.

"Help yourself. Clean as you go, if you want to help."

"Well. Indeed. I think I have a spell or two to help here..." Elo fished a small book from his belt pouch and flipped through it. "Ah, here it is... Põr cada um com seu próprio tipo."

The scrolls from about the room began floating about, rearranging themselves and stacking themselves up, each by type of writing or spell they were.

The warlock then looked around the room for a moment. It was organized but still dirty. Once again he flipped through his book. " O recolhimento da sujeira junto e desaparece."

Dirt coalesced from all over the room into a sizeable ball then that ball blinked out of existence in a flash of light.

"I am assuming these white and black stones are for some sort of game you are playing, so I'll leave them be." Elo began strolling around the room, looking for illusion spells that were derived from non-demonic sources. There were hundreds of scrolls, so even organized as he was able to make them, this would take him awhile. He sighed and began his search.

Leiko's library was predictably massive, and there was just about everything to be found in the scrolls...somewhere. Oddly, -all- of the scrolls that had been thrown around the room went and stacked themselves with the scrolls that had been damaged in the fire. It seemed there was a method to Leiko's madness.

"The stones on the floor spilled..." And the massive and heavy costume she wore would get in her way if she tried to clear them up by hand. But her magic ran to illusions and to fire, not to such menial things as a spell to clean the room.

She watched him go through the scrolls, and was happy to stay quiet and study in peace as though he wasn't even there for some time. But finally she sighed, taking a hold of one of the go stones and using a bit of illusion to transform it into a second tea cup. Fortunately, her illusions were -solid-, for so long as they lasted. And over the centuries, she had gotten strong enough that they lasted as long as she pleased.

"Come sit down...you won't be able to do it all in a day..." She set down the false tea cup and poured tea into it, finally warming up enough to act at least somewhat like a proper hostess.

"I can see that." Elo walked over and sat down near where she had proffered the cup. "I have found a few things of interest already. I just have to test out some of these spells to see if they'll be effective on a warlock, because sometimes I can't manage to cast fae magick. It is from such a fundamentally different source that sometimes my ability can't mimic it. Though I am rather good at mimicking things." That last sentence was spoken in a voice so like Leiko's most any observer would not be able to tell them apart.

"I also noticed the pillar in the northwest of this room needs shoring up, or you'll have the whole tower above collapsing in on this place. Before I found my warlock abilities, I worked with my father, who was a stonemason. I just thought you'd like to know. Unless of course, that pillar's damage is a clever Kitsune illusion, in which case I am impressed with your knowledge of architecture..."

Elo had a habit (and often an annoying one) of filling silences with an abundance of words. It would probably fade as he became more familiar with his host, but for now he was quite the chatterbox when allowed to be.

Leiko nodded quietly, not seeming to really care about what he was saying. Though she was in truth taking note of each and every word. She considered things carefully before quietly nodding. "Any structural repairs need to be attended to first and foremost of course. Please...take what you need and do what you can. Any materials you need will be reimbursed--there is a human village at the southern base of the mountain."

She didn't seem to mind his over-abundance of speech, taking it in stride and as one of his personality quirks. "As far as your skill with mimicry...yes, that is the first step... You have been focusing so hard on hiding the -horns- that you have forgotten why you're trying to do that, haven't you?" She smiled softly, obviously feeling like she had a great secret.

"Finish the repairs, and I will tell you more."

Elo chuckled. "Ah. My father always said his horns were there to hold up his halo. Of course his father was a full-blooded Oni lord, so I don't know how well that holds water. Yes, indeed. The reason to hide the horns is to avoid the humans' scorn. I wish to live among them, not like you who seem content to sit up here and ponder and ancient game of Go... No offense intended, it is just that I am more, chummy than perhaps you are."

Elo paused and considered his words. "The horns also are a symbol to me, and they remind me that I come from some downright nasty stock, and it would be terribly easy for me to just become an evil tyrant. Perhaps removing my constant reminder of them would make my struggle easier." He shrugged. "Perhaps not, however."

"On the matter of the bracing up, I have a bit of funds on hand for financing such a task. I will be sure to keep my forehead well covered when I deal with the humans. Before I go down there, I could possibly salvage some materials from around here, so I'll check that first." The warlock stretched a bit, and stifled a yawn.

"But I think all of that may have to wait until I have had some rest. I take it that I could probably find an empty bedchamber around this place for the evening?"

He had missed her point, but that was all right. If he guessed everything she was suggesting, she would run out of what it was that was keeping him here. Not...that she cared about the company, of course. Not that she was lonely. Not that she wanted him around.

Not any of that, she stubbornly promised herself.

She just wanted him here to do work on her castle, to fix the supports and tidy the grounds like he'd promised.

Nothing more.

"Do as you will. I do not particularly -care- if the humans get the commerce, I simply know it is simpler. Nothing more nothing less. As to a bedchamber, there are plenty. The ones nearest my own room are the ones in the best repair. I know the Eastern Wing has not been opened for some eight centuries...likely there are nasty creatures inhabiting the rooms at this point. I will....show you to the Northern Wing if you would like."

"That would be much appreciated. I am fairly sure that we haven't exchanged names yet. I am Elo Schal." He knew it was polite to wait for her reply and so he did.

But his mind ran at top speed while he waited for her reply. Why was this Kitsune so obsessed with that go board? He didn't detect anything magical about it. Maybe she was just a very big fan of the game. He had heard that some chess masters studied games for weeks on end to find out why the moves that were made were chosen by the players. She wasn't unattractive either. Not that it mattered. A Kitsune could presumably look like anything she chose.

She paused when he introduced himself formally, turning to face him properly and finally acting like a proper noblewoman ought to have. She bowed deeply to him, the formality of it coming naturally to her. Not just any demon had a castle in the mountains. She was a ranking lady of status, and she grudgingly accepted that she really ought to act it with a guest in her home.

"Leiko, Taiyoukai of the Northern Kingdoms and the Hokkyokusei no Youkai," she introduced herself as. Yes...a -very- high ranking noblewoman.

She straightened up again and led him towards the Northern wing of the castle. Her own bedroom was the closest door, and stood open. Her room looked to be another mess--the almost stereotypical ground zero of a royal's temper tantrum, with flung items and ripped clothing. Dust had settled over some of it, where she'd flung it years ago and never bothered to clean it. She hurried past quickly, leading him down the hallway by a few doors and opened one seemingly at random. It was dusty, it needed airing out, but...it would have to do.

"Make yourself at home...I think I will be retreating to my room for the evening, though." She bowed again and turned to hurry off, wanting to get to her room quickly and shut the door on her mess.

"Of course." Elo replied. He of course had noticed the mess, if for only the briefest of moments. It didn't surprise him, however, considering the condition of the castle. Most youkai that he had come across were obsessively focused on an individual goal, and anything not pertaining to that was deemed irrelevant.

He simply chose the room next to hers because he didn't know how structurally sound the rest of the place was, and her room stood up to whatever abuses she put it through.

Upon entering, other than the expected layer of dust, he found it looked like before the dust settled, there was a miniature whirlwind inside this room. Papers, clothing, small pieces of furniture lie scattered around. It took several cleaning spells for him to put his room into some semblance of order.

The warlock then put into place the usual protections, a warning if someone was at the entrance (a silent buzz in his head would suffice), another of his prying eye spells near the ceiling of the room concealed by its small size and unlikelyhood that anyone would look towards it anyway, and the scepter-summoning spell that would have his warlock scepter in his hand with but a thought.

It wasn't that he was suspicious of her (no more than any other magic wielder that he just met) it was just his nature to be protective.

He sat down on the bed, and read over some notes he had taken in the last few days.

After a short time, he tired of that and turned in for the evening.

Morning found Leiko in the library again, the rhythmic tapping sound of the go stones against the board easily announcing her presence in their echoing through the corridors. It was an unusual castle, Leiko's was incredibly silent most of the time. She left her guest alone, figuring that he would come to the library when he was ready. Nor was there any offer of a meal of any sort--Leiko's castle kitchen was not equipped for feeding creatures other than beings similar to herself. Especially since her dietary needs ran more towards going outside and catching something to eat and the occasional cup of tea rather than anything approaching a proper meal.

She looked up when her guest finally entered, not even really thinking about whether or not he would have had breakfast by then. She had a pot of tea with her, though this time she had a proper second cup. She poured tea for him and indicated for him to sit down.

"Good morning. Come, sit, have tea."

"Of course, M'lady." Elo sat down and took up his cup of tea, sipping briefly. "I will be heading down to the human village to purchase supplies this afternoon. I imagine there's nothing you need from the mortals..."

He paused and noticed a severely stressed beam in one corner of the room. He summoned up his scepter and pointed it in the proper direction. "Reforce a coluna." The column groaned for a moment then seemed to grow slightly. "That should do for now, I'll work on it later..."

Leiko studied Elo as he sat down, finally showing a bit of an interest in the man that had strangely decided to come and inhabit her home. He didn't look strange to her, then again as a demoness very little at all looked strange in Leiko's eyes. He didn't seem to be unattractive; she couldn't imagine why he would want to spend time with the humans when she considered them....

Well, to be fair, she wasn't sure -what- she considered them. Once upon a time, she had like most demons considered them beneath her. But that was before...him. Her eyes strayed back over to the rack of burned scrolls, her face taking on an oddly wistful and heartbreakingly sad expression.

She roused herself from it, shaking her head to clear it and turning her attention instead to the man before her. Somehow, it had become natural to expect him to be there, to sit with him. That was just her ingrained hospitality speaking, though, wasn't it? There was no reason she felt particularly kind towards him except for the feelings of wanting to be a good hostess.

She insisted that firmly to herself.

"Anything I need? Well no," though she paused to consider it. There were plenty of fish in her lake, but...if she wanted to think about it critically for a moment... She shook her head. "Actually...if you could bring me a live chicken or rabbit, it would be a welcome treat."

She would even take it somewhere to eat privately--if he wanted to live amongst humans, she doubted he would appreciate watching a kitsune's approach to eating.

"Sure. Livestock should be readily available in town. I am sure you are wondering why I wish to be accepted among the humans... Well it is because I have never fit in among the youkai, because of my human taint. I figured I'd try to fit in among them instead, for a bit."

Elo pulled a golden plate from his bag, which seemed too small to contain it, and set it on the table. Chanting a few words and running his finger around the edge of the plate, a very plain looking breakfast appeared on it. A few nondescript pieces of what could be considered fruit, small flat cakes, and a couple of pieces of what must be some sort of meat. Elo began eating it fairly casually, as if he had done it a thousand times before. He had. This plate always made the same meal, and it made it three times a day. Whenever he could he varied his diet, but he did not regret the small fortune he had spent on it, as it had saved him from starvation many a time.

"So, I expect that perhaps will be in town no more than two days, before returning here." He returned to eating his breakfast methodically.

Leiko watched him pull out his plate and frowned quietly, turning her face away again. It was good that he hadn't noticed her moment of melancholic wistfulness, but...did he really have to eat -in- the library? A lot of her scrolls were precious and ancient, and while she frequently had tea, tea didn't have any oils in it that would cause the delicate paper to deteriorate. Nor did it have the sugars in it that fruit would have that could make things sticky and attract bugs.

She held her tongue, knowing that for the moment at least she needed this man. She needed him to reinforce the bits of the castle that had suffered from age, she needed him to restore the castle where it had fallen to neglect. And if that meant putting up with him when he decided to wax on and on about himself, that would have to do, she supposed. It's not like it would take very long. With magic, he could quite easily be done with the repairs inside of a year.

In a youkai's lifetime, that was barely the blink of an eye.

"I wonder nothing. I care little." It was a bit harsh, and quite cold of her to say, but there were some things she didn't want to know. When people spoke of themselves, they frequently wanted the other to do the same in return. She had secrets, and preferred to -keep- her secrets. Her eyes drifted over to the rack of burned scrolls once again....yes, she would rather burn her secrets than share them.

"Oh of course. Kitsune are never the least bit curious..." He teased, finishing up his food. "I've a spell or two that could restore and preserve some of the older scrolls you have around here. I could demonstrate it on one you feel is less important so you see that it works. It's from an Owl youkai I met, so I think you could cast it on your own as well. It would take me perhaps a full day to scribe the scroll in a way that would be something you could learn from, unless of course the condition of these scrolls is yet another one of your masterful Kitsune illusions..." Elo packed up his plate and stood.

"I thank you for your hospitality, M'lady. Consider my offers and I shall return shortly. So, by your leave, I will be on my way to the human village." He paused at the door of the library.
