Haha, can anyone guess which story this is based off of? :D PM me if you want to join! Some of the characters are already taken, so don't be too disappointed if you don't get who you want. This is a play off of the Little Mermaid, but I'm making it a bit different. I won't be following the entire storyline . . . but hey! That's what being creative is all about. ^_^ -Es

"Do you see that?"
A sparkling object glittered in the sand.
"I think that's a doodad!"
Swooping down, the woman snagged the item, tugging it free of the dirt and sucking mud. Flicking her large fin, she grinned.
"Isn't it pretty?"
The small fish she was talking to swam in circles about her head, and she laughed. The plate she held in her mottled hands was reflective, but nothing special. But to her, an underwater dweller, it was treasure.
"I think it would look nice in the window, don't you?"
She swam up a few feet before pausing to look at her reflection. Though the platter was tarnished and bent, she could still see her long red hair flowing around her face, her green and tan mottled skin. With her large green eyes covering the better half of her face, she seemed innocent and kind. It was true that she had her moments of goodness, but Ari'yal was generally a selfish being. She had more than she needed, but continually strove for what she wasn't supposed to have. For example - her father hated human artifacts. Ari'yal kept a trove dedicated to such objects just to defy him.
Swimming slowly through a warm current, Ari'yal glanced at her colorful fish friend. "Do you think Daddy will know where I've been?" The yellow swimmer flitted about in a frantic pattern. "I know. He isn't very observant, is he?" A freakish giggle floated through the dark water, and the mermaid headed toward the surface.
Breaking through the waves, she cast her large eyes to the shore. There was her favorite spot: a small cove that warmed in the sun. Gliding over to the rocks, Ari'yal hoisted herself onto the warm surface, her dark lips pulled into a contented smile. Placing her "doodad" platter beside her, she sighed loudly. "I wish you could do this too," she said to her fish, who swam lazily around her rock.
Turning her green eyes to the sea, Ari'yal began to hum to herself, a haunting tune that echoed about the shore and off of the rocks. The song ebbed and flowed with the tide, both alluring and frightening.
Humans called the merfolk syrens, creatures of seduction that called sailors to their death at sea. Little did they know how right they were. The singing water-dwellers could pull you in and drown you without you even taking notice. But they were frightened of humans. Humans hunted them, killed them for their fanatics that thought they were a legendary race.

Syrens stayed away from humans - it meant death otherwise.

"Ari'yal!" the black-scaled youth swam up worriedly. "You father has been looking everywhere for you." He cast his large black eyes over to the other boys. "And you two! Shouldn't you have something else to be doing? How dare you all take off like that!"
"It was just a small little swim," Ari'yal said, waving it off. "I asked them to come."
"They shouldn't have gone." The youth glared over at the boys. "Go home."
"Psssh," the red-headed mermaid laughed. "You're our age. You think you have the say so around here, Glave?"
Glave stiffened a bit. Grabbing Ari'yal's wrist, he shook his head. "Your father is going to be most displeased with you."

Yokai swam around the palace looking for Ari'yal.
"Ari'yal?, where are you!" he called swimming faster. It was a calm day down under the sea and all was in order at the palace.
"Ari'yal?"he called again.
"Where could she be?...well...if I was her where would I go..."he said and soon decided to explore caverns. He hoped she wasn't in trouble, the caverns were dark and long.

"You called?" Ari'yal rushed up behind Yokai, tapping him on one shoulder before swimming over to the other side of him. "I'm right here, silly!" She had just returned from her shore expedition, and clutched her new treasure to her chest happily. "Look at this!" Shoving the metal under his nose, the mermaid grinned. "Isn't it beautiful?"

Yokai jumped and turned to see her beautiful face.
"Ari'yal?! There you are!"he said grinning. Then his eyes fell upon the piece of metal she shoved under his nose.
"It is...what...is it?"he asked. It looked like a mirror or something.
"Where were you anyway...I was searching for you for quiet a while..."he added rolling his eyes.

"I don't know what it is," she replied, looking back down at the platter in her hands. "But I'm sorry to have worried you. I was out by the shore in the cove. It's gorgeous up there this time of day!"
Her tiny fish friend swam in circles about her head, and she brushed him off.
"You should come see it with me sometime," Ari'yal said, shoving the silver plate under one of her arms. "But for now, you should help me hang this up." Grabbing Yokai's hand, the teen started swimming off toward her home - her room was a small spot nestled under the tallest tower. Her father wanted her safe, and there was no place more secure than in the middle of their city.

Yokai blushed.
"Oh...Okay then." he said following her.
"Just tell me where to meet you and I'll be there...just don't leave me waiting."he added. They approached her room.
"Okay, where do you want to put this thing? Wait...what if your father sees this?! He'll be furious!"he warned.
They swam around her room searching for a spot to put this mirror like object.

"He doesn't like anything," Ari'yal complained, sighing. She moved to flit about near the window, holding the mirror-like plate up in the dim light. "Least of all human stuffs." Her red hair floating up around her face, she frowned. "I like these things. If we can't find a place for it here, let's put it in my trove, yes?" Lowering her voice, the girl swam over to Yokai. "It's a little ways out of the city, so my father won't find it. But it's safe." Her huge green eyes widening in excitement, Ari'yal let out a mental sigh. "Come to think of it, this would look very nice near the doorway of the trove. Beautiful, really." Swimming in a happy circle about her friend, the mermaid giggled, the sound carrying through the water like an echo. "How about it?"

Bio: Alex loves all living things and as such will seldom harm living things despite her physical prowess. She likes humans and tries to interact with them but every time she does they scream and call her a monster and try to attack her. This has seriously brought down her self esteem from where she was once confident about herself and her own beauty to where she is not confident at all and thinks she is nothing more than a monster and is ugly.

The trove that she spoke of was about a mile out from the city, beneath a pile of coral and loose boulders. Dangerous, yet that was what made the young mermaid enjoy it so much. Ari'yal let out a mental "squee" of excitement, urging her friend to follow her into the hole that led into the cluttered trove. "Look at all this!" she mentally said. "I've been collecting this for a few months, and already there's so much!"

Slayt sat still as he could, the small rock beneath him barely keeping him up. He was itching to move, to explore the wide sea. He didn't have any parents to tell him not to, anyways. Looking around, he saw all the adults busy with one thing or another. Flicking his fin lightly he slowly backed up. When he was behind a wall he sighed, stirring the water in front of his face. After a minute of waiting to see if anyone noticed, he swam away, his strong tail pushing him faster every second. After awhile he saw Ari'yal and Yokai up ahead.
"Hey! Guys! Wait for meee!"
He pushed himself harder- too fast. He swam head- first into Yokai's back, a short cry falling from his mouth.

Ari'yal looked back to see Slayt, smiling slightly. "I guess you can come too," she said, using her free hand to grab one of his. With each of the boys in tow, she pulled them into her trove.
"We're going to put my new human thing somewhere in here."

He smiled widely, excitement lighting up his pale green eyes. Following her as she pulled them behind, his fins moved almost like a dog wagging it's tail. When they entered the trove his eyes widened, neck craning as he looked up and around.
"You collected.. all of this? You must explore every day! You have to take me with you!!"
He practically bounced around the trove, going up to every thing and examining it.
"This is amazing, Ari'yal!"

Alex fluttered along the seaweed away from everybody else as she commonly did even before her self esteem was shot. She unlike most other Syrens was part octopus which was probably why they attacked her she thought. She enjoyed the way the seaweed brushed against the tips of her tentacles... it had a sort of calming effect though it did nothing for her confidence. She watched as the fish swam by her blissfully as if there wasn't a care in the world. They were the lucky ones that didn't have to deal with her curse.
