There's a discussion thread about this and how to avoid the marketplace problems Gaia and other sites have, but in general saying that getting a marketplace would make Menewsha like Gaia is a silly reason for the site to not get one. Gaia did not create the concept of a marketplace. They probably weren't the first avatar site to do it, and they aren't the only one doing it /now/. So I don't think this would really make Menewsha like Gaia at all, since it's a convenient thing (which I'm sure you know since you like the idea and were hoping for it ;P).

Menewsha Video: If this idea were to happen, it shouldn't be mandatory to view the video. (Sort of like when you first join Menewsha, you get the little banner telling you to introduce yourself. If the video was like that, I'd get mad, because though I don't have dial-up anymore, I did for a LONG time and on SOME sites it was mandatory. Neopets, for example. To get rid of the annoying little checkbox when you create a new account, you have to watch a video. I had to get someone else to do it for me to get it to go away.) I do like the idea, because some people are more visual learners and need not only screenshots, but moving pictures and video explaining things. It can also better show the overall feel of the site, without people questioning whether or not the screenshot was doctored. (Lame, I know, but some sites are probably evil enough to do that to make their site seem literate when it's not or something! D:)

However, the thing I'm unsure about with this idea is posting the videos on other sites. While I understand it is good to advertise the site and get more members, I find that if you advertise too much you tend to get the wrong sort of people. And I don't want to sound mean and all "elitist" on people when I say this; but the truth is, there are some nasty people out there. Whether they're mean, completely immature, annoying as hell, trolls, whatever the case may be - they exist and they go on avatar sites. One of the advantages of this site being smaller is that we don't have to worry about that. And I think once the site focuses on advertising for new members, it risks becoming more like other sites that do the same. This may not sound bad, but look at all the people who came from those other sites, unhappy, only to find this one and enjoy it. Advertising is good, but advertising too much I think would harm the site and it's userbase.

More Hair Styles and Colours: While I'm sure this idea has been discussed numerous times, you are completely right. I made a mule not too long ago that was male, and there didn't seem to be as many choices in regard to clothes and hair. In fact, most "male" items/hair on this site seem to be unisex. I understand it's easier to do girly things because girls have a wide variety of outfit styles they can choose from. Even in real life, I guess guys clothes are fairly limited, but still. You should look around for other threads about this, see what other people have said.

Side Panel: If you go to "My Account" there's something like that to do a LOT of things, and you can view the other stuff through your profile. (I do that a lot myself.) Putting a side panel that is on every page would, like other people have said, likely mess with the layout and possibly cause horizontal scrollbars (which are very unpleasant D; I always thought I had a reasonably large monitor and people always make graphics waaaaaaay too wide and put things way off on the left. It's unattractive, and, honestly, I usually don't even bother if I see that. I go elsewhere.) The option to turn this on and off is interesting, but I think some of that stuff could just be added in the navigational area at the top instead (where it says "My Account" "Avatar" "Mail" etc.) It would probably be easier, mess up the layout a lot less, and it wouldn't be unpleasant for some people to view.

Shout Box: While I like the idea of using this as a way to post updates for people viewing, in case they wouldn't have even seen your thread otherwise or bothered to check, I dislike the idea of a shout box. The reason for this is because it would be harder and slower to moderate, if possible at all (depends on the shoutbox.) This means people might be more offensive or negative in the shoutbox, and things like that may actually have the opposite effect, and scare people away from that forum. I also find shoutboxes to be impersonal, and it would be difficult to have without it changing the overall feel of Menewsha as a fun, warm community. I'm not saying this idea is impossible, and if it could be worked out it would be very beneficial. However, a lot of different possible problems would need to be thought out first before it could be implemented on the site.

Menewsha Equipment: This is a neat idea because it might entice more people to help out the site with money to keep it running. And I like that you recommended a site that would be easy to use for the site to start off. The only problem I have with this idea, and it's not even the idea so much as what the site gaining more income might mean. Menewsha seems different from other sites in the fact that they don't focus on earning a lot of money and making that their only purpose for the site existing. Stuff like this, if done in moderation, would be great. And if the admin of the site chose to do that - but again, in moderation - I think that would be a great idea. As long as they don't lose site of what seems to be the important qualities of this site, I think anything to help them keep it up and running is good.

By doing this it would give the members of menewsha that do not fully understand things to look at these videos and once the video gets enough views youtube would advertise menewsha to THOUSANDS of people. Now I am sure that out of all of those people these videos are being broadcasting to, that there would quite a lot that would come and visit the site meaning more people and new members :). Also, you said advertising too much in one of your sentences, ok look at neopets? Look at gaiaonline? Look at all of those sites which advertise in every place you can think of. Does it hurt them? No. It might hurt them a little but overall it helps them A LOT. Side panels: I do not think you understand what I am talking about. The sidebar would help out more then you think. Yes you can search through your account and stuff but it would be a hell lot easier if you could customize a side bar and put thing that you want on it. If you have the stuff YOU want on it then it would be so much easier then searching through your profile and account for the certain thing you want. Also like I said, for people with too small of computers there could be an option to remove it and also it would only take up about 2 or 3 centimeters on the side of the screen because there would be an arrow to open and close the side panels. I do not see how taking 2 or 3 centimeters out of the side would effect anyone or do any harm in any way. Who the heck stares at the light blue on the left and right anyways? Why not make the forum better and make use of the sides?

If someone post something that they should not have they can be infraction and it takes about 20 seconds to delete their post in it. Also, the staff members can permanently/temporary ban people from the shout box taking their rights away from it. The shout box won't be for talking, only a way to say the updates you put on your thread. Ex. 'SouLSuRv1vER: Now Selling multiple Event Items and Buying Kings Crown"
Then people can see that, go to my thread and make offers or sell me the crown. You see what I mean? Instead of searching the title and searching through the first few pages you can just see the shout box at the top, search through that and see if you can find what you want.

Actually, in a sense, advertising DOES hurt those two sites that you mentioned, but not in the way you're thinking. Look at all the spammers, scammers, and trolls on those websites. Look at all the rude, impolite people. Now take Menewsha, a smaller community. Look at how much kinder and nicer people are. I don't mean to imply that all advertising is bad, just that if you get too many members all at once, I believe a lot of those trolls/spammers/scammers and overall impolite people will join. That's not to say some nice ones won't join as well - I'm sure they will - but that's one of the downsides to that idea, which is all I was referring to. I find sites that dedicate themselves too much to advertising tend to be the ones that end up full of all the crap people come to Menewsha to escape. Posting videos on youtube and other video uploading sites can be helpful, but like I said - this is the downside.

As for the hair and such I could have swore it was, but apparently not. Maybe I'm thinking of a random conversation that broke out on a thread somewhere. ^^;;

The side panel, I understand more so what you mean, and I think that could be handy. Maybe it could be collapsable? So you can tuck it away and pull it out when you need it.

Yeah I can see your point too. I just believe that if we did have more members here, it could make the forum more fun. I see the same threads in the exchange daily and there are never new ones that I see often haha. I would like to see some more people come and make things more fun. (The reason I mentioned the exchange forum is because I usually check out the threads around there and visit different people there.)

That is why I get my teachers pissed at me in school because I prove them wrong about stupid shit all of the time just for the hell of it hahaha.

We are quite identical in that arguing your point on things, then :) I was just in a scenario like that on Neopets, and the girl finally stopped responding because she couldn't argue against what I was saying xD And I know you didn't say tuck for the side bar thing, that was an idea I had to go along with yours that might make it more convenient for people if for whatever reason it couldn't be disabled properly.

More people in general on the site would be great. I often find myself going to many different threads because it may be awhile before one I find particularly interesting is responded to. This is where more members would be nice. If the moderators increased their numbers (so more moderators were selected) to satisfy the needs of the userbase with more people joining, and if the older more experienced users tried to help with reporting and kindly pointing newbies in the right direction, advertising would be great :)

And I may have ;P It's just common with avatar sites for more hair and clothes requests, and more colours to go with both of those, so I could be thinking of a completely different site. People have such varying needs that there never seems to be enough to satisfy everyone, though I do think the boys need some more item love ;)

I go on Neopets for the guilds, though I was recently frustrated by the leader of one. She was acting extremely elitist, despite claiming otherwise D; she tried convincing me my /best friend/ who I know quite well, was brainwashing me into thinking she was being rude to him in a neomail. And I was like, um, hate to break it to you cupcake but I have access to his account and saw for myself.

I swear, people on Neopets are worse than people trying to be mean on Gaia. At least on Gaia, people say what they mean when they mean it. On Neopets, you have to be really careful so you don't get iced, so everyone is so underhanded and sneaky and AHHH.

And Menewsha is none of these, yay!

Back on topic, more members - especially if they were male members - might go hand in hand with the needing more clothes/hair styles/colours for all avatars but boys in general too. So one suggestion could sort of kick start the other ;P

Just updated the thread with a new suggestion for the newcomers.

Most would probably just close it without reading it and then whine that it keeps coming up every time they go to the home page. :XD I don't wait for pop ups to load properly before I close them because they're usually ads wanting to break my computer. Plus if they look the fresh meat forum is more than helpful about the economy and what can be done. It's just the same thing some people seem to just not bother to read the stickies.

@portraitinblack I agree ^^ no one has been mean to me on gaia yet :3 but on neopets those kids are aggressive either way i got banned on neopets for no apparent reason or so my little cousin did as i simply gave her my account b/c i quit playing shes only four and only plays the game so i see no reason how its possible :x
