Holy poop... I don't even know where to begin with this movie.

It's probably the most inspiring, most eye-opening movie that I have ever seen. Ever.
And let me just tell you that I'm a BIG movie-watcher. ;)

---

So, in case you have been living under a rock (not that that's always a bad thing... rocks can often times be very, very comfortable), there was a movie released a few weeks ago called 'Precious'; it's based off of the novel 'Push' by Sapphire, and is a pretty damn amazing story. I don't want to get into all of the details, since some of them are a bit gruesome and heartrending... Plus, knowing me, I'll give away the WHOLE storyline if I try to summarize it up! :lol:

Basically, you can feel free to Wiki/Google it if you want more information on it.
For now, let's discuss!

Just some pointers to help lead the chat along:
-Have you seen it?
-What's your opinion on the film?
-Etc., etc.

Alright, I'm kinda flabbergasted people seem to have not seen this yet... :roll:
It was a damn good movie, and I don't care how many people prefer softcore comedies that melt your brains.
Whether you're a human being or a robot who lets others think for them, well... Regardless, see this movie. D:<

P.S.: Y'all smell. :<

I've seen this movie! It was really good--I'm usually not into these types of movies, but I'm in love with good acting. And the acting in this movie was amazing.

I think that Precious and Inglourious Basterds were the best movies of 2009. We got some stellar movies over the summer, like Up and Star Trek, but those don't really compare to Precious and Quentin Tarantino's war film. The acting in Star Trek wasn't too good and the story in Up (while much better than other animated films) didn't really soar after those first 15 minutes.

On the other hand, Precious definitely soared. It was great to see her grow during the film and heartbreaking to see her most difficult moments. The movie had some big actors, but they didn't detract from the movie, like B.J. Novak and Brad Pitt did in Inglourious Basterds. So... all in all, although I think I enjoyed Inglourious Basterds more, Precious really nailed it with the perfect actors, plot and pacing.

We definitely need to see more movies like this one in the future.

I agree completely, Siri!
I loved the ending of Precious... It was so perfect. :)
Makes me want there to be more to the story, although I think the writer of the book ended it that way to begin with.
By the way, apparently the lady in the daycare center of the Welfare Center (the one where Mariah Carey worked) who takes her son when she goes to meet with her mother was the author of the book! O: I make no sense, but pretend I do.

I agree on the perfect casting, too. I personally expected Mariah Carey's part to be too big for her caliber of acting, but I was extremely glad when it turned out to be not-so-big after all. It had enough meaning to it to be included, but not enough for her to really matter.

I loved the Precious' teacher at Each One Teach One, who I heard is up for a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Such a well-played character.

And Mo'Nique... that is, the lady who played Precious' mother... Just... wow. WOW. I was blown away. That was such a morbid B-I-T-C-H! lmao. If she doesn't win an award for that role, I'll be pissed. She totally dominated the screen with her cruelty and animosity... I didn't know Mo'Nique had that in her, to be honest. xP

Overall, awesome movie. I'd recommend it to anyone, no matter how squeamish you are to, well, real-life concepts. It's kinda dumb to not see it just because you disagree with the subject matter, or think it's too blunt, etc. Such is life! >=P

@Kole: It came out a few weeks ago. November... 20th, I want to say? That's probably wrong though, lol.
Might've even come out November 13th.

Yeah, the actress who played Precious' teacher was amazing. I also loved all the students, especially the crazy one. I don't remember her name but she had a hilarious laugh. :D

I am usually not one to watch inspiration movies, but I will see it if someone just decided they want me with them.
Just give me spoilers lol.

I heard the movie was doing well, of course it has some critics who judge everything on appearance and ethnicity.

Yeah, critics are DUMB.
I read this one review a few weeks ago of Precious that totally made me want to shoot the writer. D:
She went on and on about how the film robs the audience of an "authentic" experience because of all of the violence and brutality in the movie... Blah blah blah, bullshit. :roll: She kept saying how there are similar situations out there that are more "precious," because they're not as "harsh and melodramatized". >_<!
The nerve of some people...!

I'd really recommend it. It's not just an inspiration movie, because it's so much more than that. >w> In my opinion, anyway!
I think kids these days need to be more exposed to this sort of stuff, no matter how cruel that sounds. It just puts their bratty tendencies into perspective.

There's not enough I can say about Precious.
I talk at movies while I'm watching them, and I DEFINATELY had a few words for Mary(her mother).
It was disgusting what her mother AND her father did to her.
Because "daddy" was not the only one sexual abusing her. Pair that with the physical abuse AND the mental abuse she'd suffered. To just be called stupid and dumb with hate, and by the person that's supposed to care for you most. By your mother.

I was PISSED when her mother endangered Abdul, and I was telling the Precious the whole time not to go back, not to put him in that situation, not to give him to her.
Was anyone else scared that she would burn him with that cigarette?
> w>;

@ Facade ::

"Melodramatizied"!?
Real life is different for EVERYONE, and not everyone get the picket-fence, white house with blue shutters kind of life.
That critic can shove it.
They probably just wanted to stand out, because HONESTLY people see what they want to see. I've never questioned "What did the critics say!?" before seeing a movie.

Yeah, I rarely listen to the critics - however, when a movie's excellent, I tend to Google it after seeing it... And I saw that review - one thing led to another, and I was pissed for the rest of the night! xD;

I totally thought her mom was going to burn Abdul with the cigarette, too!! OMG! O_O
The moment in the movie where her mom throws the TV down the steps is so... poetic, to me. It's a messed up part, sure, but... I just loved it. That part made me feel great inside, and made me KNOW Precious was going to be alright.
You know how she talked about always waiting for the time when she would look up and her mom would be dropping a TV on her, or a piano, etc.? That was before this actually happened... And before it happened, I kept thinking, "...Would her mom actually be THAT fucked up!?" o_O

Man. Such a good movie. I honestly feel like writing to Gabourey Sidibe herself after seeing it - it was THAT inspirational to me!

The part at the end where her mom has that meeting with her in the welfare department was also just... wow. So messed up, and it spoke a million words.

Despite utterly despising Mary as a character, I have SO much respect for Mo'Nique after she took on that role. She brought it to such a horrendous level of realism that I'm scared shitless of her. :shock:
