No, I think it just helps if you already know how to play a stringed instrument. The viola's quite difficult to learn after violin, though, because it's so similar yet so different.
I think the instrument I'm best with after cello is violin ^^ I found out from teaching that I could probably take a Grade 1 exam with violin. In standard grade music terms, that's Foundation level
