Before you go jumping to chocolate and jewelry, my girlfriend is quite the tom boy.
She dresses pretty, in skirts and heals in things. But she isn't a big fan of diamonds and fancy jewelry.
Her hobbies are things like drawing, welding, and she wants to do tattooing one day.
Despite her appearance, she is quite the... unique girl. However the other day, she saw my cousin Hannah wearing a beautiful new necklace that her boyfriend had gotten her for Christmas. Later that night, Hannah mentioned to me that my gf had commented on how she wanted me to make a sweet gesture like that from me just not in jewelry.
Of course I would love to do something like that for my girlfriend. But what do I get for my tomboy girlfriend?

Should I get something for her and what should it be?

Or should I take her somewhere or something?

Depending on your budget, you could do a combination of both(also if you drive it would help out alot). Take her to a nice restaurant(depending on budget that you have) and have the present(personally, I would sugest something arsty) sitting on her seat(you would have to have hid it in the trunk and ran out to the car before leaving the restaurant) for when you get back to the car.

Artsy is good. I like artsy More importantly i think she will like artsy. And the idea sounds pretty crafty. This is a good start.

If she's into things like drawing, you could get her a new sketch book and some new, upper-quality pencils/pens depending on how much you're willing/able to spend. I like the idea Draciolus suggested a lot.

I know if I were more of a tomboy (which I'm not; my mom and I are redesigning my ring with a total of three 20pt diamonds and I was practically DROOLING in the jewelery store), I would like something that reflects me and what I like.

I'm sure you're figure it out.

does she like interesting old jewelery? I personally collect really old rings and necklaces, they are gorgeous and have personality! YOu could find something she might like at a collectible shop or a thrift store. I am a tom-boy as well, but I have a weakness for really old stuff like that.

I think the art book idea is great! I personally say that colored pencils can be decent and cheap, but the quality goes up with the price. Rose-art is the cheapest, but the lowest quality, and crayola is also decently priced but higher quality than Rose-art. After that, I like prang, prismacolor, and berol. I hope that helps with the pencil thing. Also, Art stores(AC Moore, Micheals, etc.) tend to have sets available.

She welds? You could try to get her a jewelry making kit. I have one of these and I love it. They are also in craft/art stores.

Good luck!

What kind of art things are you planning on getting her? If she's big into drawing, you could try getting her some nice pens or even copic markers. Ever heard of those? They're amazing. But they're very expensive, top notch markers. She'd have to be really into illustrating.

@ Miechan: Oddly enough, my gf actually loves crayola pencils way better than prisma. According to her they work just as well.

@ Akinmytua: She likes earthy thing like that macreme/hemp/leather stuff. I've never heard of her wearing any old jewelry or linking anything old to begin with. Except for that ooooold wooden Pepsi crate she has that she really wants to turn into an art project some how. Also, the welding she does is larger scale. Like metal sculpture.

@ Kid-kokopelli: Oh yea! She has some of those copic markers! She absolutely loves them. Maybe I can get her more. And hers are all in boxes. Maybe a carrying case will work too?

Well, since you're girlfriend is a rather practical girl, give her a practical gift that appeals to her interests, hobbies or needs. Since her hobbies are on the side of design and art, get her something that'll benefit her hobbies as well as satisfy her desire to design and be creative.

What type of drawing is she into? Sketching will either be a sketch pad, top quality sketching materials like a variety of penicls that range form soft to hard. Techinical drawing can range from a drawing book with grids to the sturdy geometry sets since they involve proportions, numbers and what not. Colouring pencils are just as great idea so you can either get Crayola, Faber Castel, Derwent brands as they are scaled on the more cheap but not so cheap range or if you want to go higher quality then get Prisma, Berol and etc.

Since she welds and works on metal woking on a large scale, you can get her metal working tools like soldering iron, metal grinders drills, screwdriving drills and etc. Depending on the brand they get expensive but you can find affordable and high quality equipment.

To satisfy her tattooing dream, you can get an illustration book on various works that tattoo artists have done. There are such bookstores that have those books such as Borders, it is just a matter of finding it that it gets real hard.

And the idea of taking your girlfriend out, I'll have to agree with Draciolus. Take her to a restaurant that fits in you budget. Since she sounds like a unique girl take her to a restuarant that appeals to her tastes but fits in your budget, that way it'll be quite different than most places where they set the simple and traditional romantic setting.

These are my suggestions. Good luck on finding a good gift for your girlfriend!

hmm, does she game? perhaps buy her some video games, or perhaps even movies that's shes been wanting. What about hand made crafts or even wall scrolls of some sort? Thankfully I don't find it so hard since my girlfriend is a gamer xD

Make her something!

She sounds like a very creative person herself, so I'm sure she'd really appreciate it if you used your own creativity to make her something unique.
She likes drawing, so maybe you could buy her a new sketch book, and decorate the cover yourself?
Or maybe make her a pot to put her pens in for her desk, out of paper-mache?
Or you could get a jam jar and paint it using glass paints, for her to put her brushes in when she paints?

Your girlfriend sounds like identical to me *giggles*

um, does she like Stuffed Animals?

Maybe a sweet gesture like cooking her supper on night. You'd be surprised how quickly most tomboys get mushy from something like that. Cook her her favorite meal or something.

um.. if you had the money I'd say get her, her favorite style of welder... I've been asking for one for 3 years now... I know I'm never getting it ^.^'

Something like that,...
Cause from what little you told about her
Im the same way and thats what I would want....

i would get her something artsy, obviously. Something like a really really nice new sketch book with like a felt cover or sumting. And give her a new set of pencils or brushes or whatever she uses... i think she'd like that.
And in the first page of her sketch book draw her sumtin and write sumtin sweet to her.

You could but her jewellery. Not the fancypants stuff, seeing as that's not her style. But something really cool and funky instead. I'm sure somewhere there'll be places that sell pendants that are modelled on tattoos...

Here you go --> Tropical Garden Batucada

Tattoo jewellery! It's damn cool, and it's eco-friendly too!
