"Miyu. Just call me Miyu." The woman smiled softly, patting the other's back slightly to try to be of support. "And actually, it wasn't 'entertaining' in the way you'd think. I haven't had an interesting encounter like that for a while. It made me smile for that... Because you reminded me about the fact that we even have instincts. I forgot for a while, honestly... What they truly felt like, I mean."
"I suppose that would a difficult situation though in terms of your profession.... But that's why you came here, isn't it? You recognized you needed help, and came on your own in search of it. You may or may not believe me, but that really is the most difficult step of all- accepting you have a problem and trying to push forward to find a way to fix it. A lot of people couldn't do that."
She stared at the sky for a while. "Last night I couldn't sleep from memories... But I'd heard rumors from others that work on your unit that you weren't sleeping all that well last night either. Did you have a nightmare? If you did... Perhaps you could tell me a brief summary? It could give a clue, you know... To why you're struggling so much, I mean."

How did you know that? Are you connected to all of this? she thought, but didn't speak. When she finally did, it was to say, "Why, yes, I did, as a matter of fact, have a nightmare..." She recounted the nightmare in meticulous detail to Miyu.
"So, you can see why it woke me up. It was something out of a horror movie. I'm afraid I am just getting worse and more rapidly..." She paused.
She's touching me again. Is she hitting on me? Gloria thought, then shrugged it off. Just professional comforting. I've done the same, stop making it out to be more than it is. she told herself. "I don't know. Maybe I did get some strange disease that we can't detect, or maybe this crazy curse is real and I'm destined to degrade into an animal..." the nurse shook her head and shuddered, sighing.

"Actually... The nightmare may have been more then just a nightmare." She looked at the woman sternly. "Remember... You keep noting the curse. You're terrified of it, and that nightmare seems to prove the fact. However... If what I was taught in school is right, as well as something I've believed my whole life... Perhaps your fixation on it is the main source that makes it continue so rapidly."
Smiling, she looked at the sky again. "I'll give you an example- one from when I was a bit younger and not even in school yet." Her eyes closed, showing that her memory was to be vivid and full. "When I was in high school, I had nearly forgotten the day I was adopted... So when I was told that I was by my parents, it was quite a shock. It scared the living daylights out of me."
Her head turned to face the woman more directly. "I started having similar nightmares to you- not of death, but of wandering alone. I'd long forgotten the feelings I'd had when I first was adopted... I'd forgotten how hard I'd screamed and tried to get them to put me down when they were taking me out of the place I'd called home for a couple years. When I started to fixate on it, and I'll admit I still do to a somewhat strong extent... I turned back into that person I'd been. I'd gotten so scared of forgetting my past again... That I decided it was all that mattered. I started pulling fits again, started struggling in many ways with the information..."
"It may not sound at all similar to you, but... It sounds like you only started fixating on this curse when you heard about it. And once you started fixating on it, it began to become real. It's not that unheard of. You aren't crazy... Your mind is just sort of putting things together without letting you watch it."

Gloria nodded. "So, suppose that is true. How can I get away from doing it? I really don't want to be like this. What is there to do about it? Knowing what's causing it is good, but if I don't know how to fix it, where does that get me?" She sighed and looked down at her lap, silent tears running down her face.
The nurse laced her fingers together in her lap, as if she feared what they would do if she didn't restrain them, and began sobbing quietly. That still sounds like it's me. I'm crazy because some stupid part of me believes in a silly curse! This doesn't help me at all! she thought, as she had to gasp for breath between silent sobs.

She let her arms slither around the woman's back, pulling her into a soft embrace. "The point is to occupy your mind with something other then this curse you fear so much... Fixating on it will do nothing. Fixate on something that will make you happy instead. I know it sounds impossible- trust me I do, but... If you don't try... You'll never know for sure, will you?"
After that, Miyu said no more words. She'd whisper soft noises of encouragement and attempts of comfort, but nothing more. She simply held onto the woman crying, trying to keep her at ease at least to some extent. To see her in so much pain... I don't want to see it anymore. I want her to feel better... She shouldn't have to be in this place...

She gave into the embrace easily and gladly. Eventually her sobs subsided. "There's only one other thing that has been on my mind lately, and I am afraid that is just as crazy..." She buried her head in Miyu's chest for a moment and tightened her grip, and it was all at once more than evident what that other thing on her mind was...
This is crazy, what am I doing? She told herself, but she wasn't going to stop enjoying this moment if her life depended on it.

"Would you like to tell me what the other thing is?" Miyu wasn't very good at figuring out what was on someone's mind just through an action. She needed a subsequent amount of words to understand a situation, and this was just one of those time. "I'm happy to try to help you talk it out, if you'll let me."

"I..." her words failed her again, but this time for another reason. Gloria suddenly lifted up her head and kissed Miyu again, deeply this time. She clung tightly to her through the kiss then broke away, slightly. "Does that explain it well enough?" she said breathily. Oh my God, I did it again what is wrong with me? But why do I want her to want me too? Gloria Seshet's mind raced through dozens of scenarios in the moments before Miyu's reaction.

Gloria broke away from Miyu and ran directly back to her room. She gathered her few things and headed out the front door of the facility. Good thing she'd decided to dress normally instead of that hospital gown she'd worn yesterday. She was planning on making an excuse to whomever was at the front desk and calling in her check out later. She was convinced that she could no longer stay here. It was making her even more crazy. This Miyu could be another patient for all she knew! She certainly didn't act like any psychologist she had ever heard of!

Miyu was known for having peculiar ways of doing her job. She tried to show she was a human just like anyone else, but it did tend to startle them. So, when the woman had run off, she was not surprised at all. She simply went to the front desk and noted that she would help with any check-outs from that unit if needed. With that, she saw the doctor and walked up to her. "Are you alright? Your patients are worried, Doctor."
"This is why I wish you'd have gotten a degree in psychiatry aside from your doctorate in psychology and writing."
"You know that I would never have managed that. I don't like to work with medicine. I work with the mind, not chemicals."
"I know... And that's why half the patients here get baffled by you. However..." She held out a letter. "The last patient that had been here that left wrote a thank you letter to you. Your methods are strange, miss Aldenel, but they do work in some ways." Miyu smiled and looked at the note.

Gloria walked out after gathering her things and stopped dead in her tracks once she got to the lobby. Miyu was there, talking with another of the staff. Was she going to report her to the police for sexual assault? She couldn't face her right now, so she turned and dashed back into her room and sat on her bed, hanging her head and trying to figure out all of the bizarre emotions in her head.
In fact, she sat there so long that she lost track of time, and the next thing she heard was the bell indicating it was lunchtime. She wouldn't go down to the cafeteria today, she resolved. They'd either assume she left or a nurse would bring her something to eat.
Really, Gloria didn't know what else to do.

Miyu had gone back to work without ever having seen Gloria- she'd purposely paid no heed, trying to give the woman time to go through her thoughts. If the woman left, she left. That was nothing in particular. When someone was about to leave from the unit, she was called and would help talk about whether it was a good time. Many were ready, but some weren't.
Some patients complained on their way back that they were told they weren't ready to leave. They complained to themselves, however they didn't realize no one was next to them many times. It was the patients still struggling with psychosis to a major extent. They'd say something about a Miss Aldenel, but they never said her first name. Most people didn't even know Aldenel wasn't her first name at all.

Since no police came in asking questions, Gloria assumed they hadn't been called. She accepted the lunch, and later the dinner, served by the nurses as they came in to look in on her. She still hadn't seen her doctor yet.
Eventually, she drifted off to sleep. Her dreams tonight were not of Africa, but of Miyu. They were much more pleasant dreams. And when she awoke, she found herself relaxed, and a little aroused.
She spent the time for the first day she checked into the place to totally make herself up. A light tank top with a sweater, just a little on the tight side, over it. Hair done up well, and just a little makeup. Gloria decided that she would venture out again today, to that same bench she sat at when she first met Miyu.

Miyu was already at the similar area, walking around in circles to get different angles of view of a particular patch of flowers in the center of the courtyard. The flowers, varying in colors from red as a fire-truck to yellow like the sun, kept her entertained the entire time. As she sensed footsteps through her ears, nearing her after a while, she looked around to notice Gloria when she first came again that morning. "Funny seeing you here again today, isn't it?"

Gloria froze in place and didn't know what to say. She bit her lip, and looked away awkwardly. "Yes, I guess it is. Look, I'm sorry, and I am totally glad you didn't press charges..." her voice failed, not from not being able to think but from not having anything else to say. After a long moment, she continued.
"Look, I guess I just need to find another place to do this. I really screwed everything up here. I just, wanted to say I'm sorry before I left. I don't feel any more stable than when I came here, less so, in fact. The only thing that consoles me about this is the fact that my insurance is covering one hundred percent of my time here." She paused again.
"I should go." and with that, she began turning away, back towards the facility.

"It is alright if you wish to leave," The words were soft, escaping her lips like a strand of silk being spun into thread. "But won't you at least let me help you with the paperwork and whatnot? I wish to help you, however I do not know what else I can do for you at this point... You'd have to tell me more of what you wish for me to help with. I believe in your capability as a person to succeed and thrive in the outside world, truly. What worries me is that you are much more stable externally then you seem to have inside. You are in pain internally... It is clear to me very much. I don't like to see that. I may not be able to do much for you... However..."
"I can at least see you off with hope for you that the future will be brighter than the present is for you at the moment. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel... If you keep pushing forward, I am sure you will find it, Gloria."

Something snapped in Gloria at that moment. All thought of decorum or tact went out the window. But it wasn't like before; she was in full control of her faculties. "Listen, woman. Twice now I've accosted you sexually, and you act as if nothing at all happened! I never considered myself anything else but straight all of my life but here in the course of two days I've totally turned that on its ear! I haven't seen my personal doctor that I'm paying for... for two days, and here you are calmly offering to help me check out? I'm beginning to think that I am the sane one and you're the one who's crazy! What do you think of that!?"
Gloria just stood there with her hands on her hips, staring at Miyu and fuming with anger and frustration.

"I'm happy." Miyu's words came out as if it were nothing- like she'd had that said before. "Because you're admitting that you are still sane. That makes me happy. I don't blame you for the assaults you mention... They weren't necessarily assaults. You acted upon instinct because of your current condition- it would be wrong to blame you personally for that. Yes, my tactics in social work are not the kinds most are used to learning in school- my methods don't come from school. I graduated years ago, and within a short time-frame. I didn't really learn the normal methods for that reason... Nor do I even believe in them. I was in therapy for a large chunk of my life, Gloria... Those tactics? They don't work on everyone."
"I spent the days you came here reading notes that were taken so I could get to know what you were like. I wasn't surprised by your actions. If anything, I was surprised they weren't more frequent by the way the notes were taken. I used that as a base to try to provoke a reaction from you. Now I'm getting one. Tell me... What do you feel when you say that you feel you may be the sane one? Doesn't it sound like you're recognizing perhaps you are not cursed like you feared?"

For a long moment, Gloria just trembled with outrage. She knew? For what seemed like an eternity, Gloria held back a nearly overwhelming urge to pounce on Miyu and beat some emotion out of her! But for the first time since this transformation happened to her, she was able to overcome this strange and powerful instinctual urge. I can beat this. Gloria told herself. And with that internal admission, her rational mind returned to her. She was instantly calm.
"Listen, I haven't believed in the curse - consciously anyway - ever since I was told about it. But the mind is far more than what we believe on the surface." She paused and walked up to Miyu, placing a hand on the smaller woman's shoulder. "You are the craziest psychologist I've ever met, and in my field I've met a lot of them, but, at least for now, I guess I've beat back whatever this is. I am going to check out now, but I would like to keep in touch with you."
Gloria let her hand drop from Miyu's shoulder and cocked her head, awaiting a reply.

Miyu smiled softly, nodding. "I get that a lot. No one expects a twenty-five year old to have a doctorate anyway. Especially not in psychology... When there is one, I don't think anyone would think of them as sane just from the fact that there has to be something odd about them that they could manage that." She took the girl's hand, putting a small card of some kind into it and smiling.
"This card has my general contact information. I work outside of her as a private clinician, so feel free to call or come in if you want to talk. I know your insurance already, and I work with them. So if you need me, it's fine with them too. I work with most insurance... Because I'm in this to help. Not for the money." With that, putting her hand back to her side, she took a step back while still smiling to the woman.
"I'm still human like everyone else. That's why I'm different... And it's why you're different then others too. Humans are all special in their own ways. You just have to remember that you are too. What makes you unique... Though sometimes those things may be thought of as bad... Your worst downfall can also be your strongest asset. Just keep that in mind, okay?"

"Sure." She tucked the card away and smiled a bit. "I'll go ahead and check out. But I think I might call you fairly soon. Especially if this stuff in my head isn't truly over yet. Goodbye, for now."
Gloria turned and walked back to her room, gathered her things, and made her way home. On the drive back, she kept going over all of it in her head. The whole thing seemed surreal, like a strange dream. By the time she got home, she'd half convinced herself the more outrageous things she had done were in fact dreams. There is no way all that could have happened with such a non-reaction from Miyu. No matter what one was used to, there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, and Gloria had crossed a few of those.
She considered calling back to work and cutting her leave of absence short, but she'd planned for not only being off for three months, but having to pay for the monthly co-pay to the facility. Now, after only just over two weeks, she was "cured". Just to make sure, Gloria decided to ride out the full three months, rather than deal with all the paperwork. She could use a vacation anyway. She really had no break from the time she left high school that lasted more than a week.
That might have been part of the problem, She thought. Even when I went down to Africa, I was working. I need some time to myself. "Now, what to do with myself. I don't even have a real hobby. That has to be part of it. I was too focused on work." Gloria ended up her train of thought out loud to herself.
When she got all settled in back home, she decided she would call Madeline from work. It was Thursday, and Maddy worked Sunday through Wednesday. That meant she would be in full swing on the social scene tomorrow. That was a nurse's life. Work twelve to sixteen hour days four days straight, go home and crash for your first day off, then have a couple of days to yourself before it started all over again.
"Hello?" Maddy's sleepy voice came over the speakerphone. "If this is Mark, I will not come in tonight. I'm depleted."
"No, Maddy, It's me, Gloria." She explained.
"Gloria!" Her voice immediately became excited. "How's your leave going? I mean, everyone said it was medical, and you had to go a special clinic-"
Gloria interrupted her before she could continue. "Yeah, I thought it would take a few months for treatment, but these things are variable and I got through it pretty quickly. Still, I'm going to take it easy at home for awhile. I was wondering, were you headed out to Crazy Horse tomorrow night?"
"Of course! But, are you on meds or anything? You don't want to-" Maddy trailed off. She was alluding to Corey, a male nurse who had managed to kill himself by going out on an alcohol binge while he was on some anti-depressants.
"No, no. I went to a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, Maddy. But I'll still be the DD tomorrow, just to be on the safe side." Gloria was looking forward to getting back to normality.
"Sure thing then! What... Nine-ish at my place then?" Maddy replied.
"On the dot!" Gloria said and they both laughed. Another inside joke. There was one doctor who was habitually late, but always demanded his nurses be there 'on the dot'. Whenever he came in, the nurses would always make some innocuous comment about punctuality at his expense.
Gloria hung up the phone, and sighed. This would be a good thing for her. She took a long soak in the bathtub (she'd been relegated to showers at the facility, something she didn't care for), and went to bed, full of anticipation for the following evening.
The last thing she thought before she nodded off was, I wonder if Miyu would want to come?

Miyu's sleep pattern was that of a peanut- as in, it didn't exist. One day she'd sleep five hours, the next ten, the next two. Some days she didn't even sleep due to excitement about new information to soak into her sponge-like mind. As she felt her body fall back on her bed at that point, she wasn't actually tired, but had no real research to do at that moment. "It's nice to be home... But I wonder how things are at the clinic? Eh... I have off tomorrow... And no appointments at my office... Looks like it's gonna be a boring day..."
This resulted in her calling the first person she'd think to call when bored- her childhood friend Joe, now an aspiring archaeologist. Joe rarely slept either- his time was spent with his nose in various history books, studying diligently in an attempt for knowledge. They were known well for that- they were both information-driven, loving to learn and not much else.
"'Ello?" The voice was pleasantly familiar. "Koizumi."
"Joey!" Her voice sounded like that of a small child. "What's going on with your studies?"
"Oh- learning about the pyramids right now. Pretty detailed, this book I borrowed. It's not like you to call so late. Bored?"
"I can't sleep and I have no research to do right now!" She was basically complaining, but the man on the other side didn't seem to mind. "Are you busy tomorrow?"
"Sadly. I got classes constantly. You have off?"
"Yeah. No work at the clinic or office, so..."
"You'll figure something out. You always do."
"Still..." She sighed and just smiled to herself. "Thanks, Joey. Don't slack off!"
He laughed, "I won't, I won't!" With that, the two hung up and she stared at the ceiling. "I wonder if there's a way I can find something to do soon..."

Gloria awoke after only a short catnap. It was only ten o'clock. She sat there staring at Miyu's card for a good ten minutes. "Well it's not getting any earlier, and all she can do is say no." She told herself.
She started several times to call the number and hung up before finishing dialing. Was it crazy to call your psychologist to ask if she wants to go party with you at a dance club? Probably, but not as crazy as she had been before she saw her.
Finally, she let the call go through. It was ringing...
