Exactly. Feeling a sense of wonder at how... well, amazing and huge and beautiful the universe is. :) Agnostic is pretty much not knowing what to believe, or believing that there's no way to know what to believe when it comes to religion. It's not the easiest thing to explain...

Hey, in my Native American History class, we're reading The Mishomis Book, which tells the Ojibway creation story. Among other things, it includes a deluge myth, so there are some parallels to Christianity. Which is neat. But while the Christian creation story has Adam and Eve kicked out of Eden for seeking knowledge, the Ojibway story has the Original Man, well, tasked with seeking knowledge. It's kind of awesome. :)

wow, that creation story sounds really neat, cica... i like how man is not punished for his curiosity and instead encouraged to nurture that part of the self...

soooo.... yea... ahem... <.< ... >.>

Yeah, it's becoming one of my favorite creation myths. Right up there with the Greco-Roman one.

the japanese one I read was really weird. Its all about sex with everything in sight really. siblings, everyone. And the limbs fell off this one guy and became mountains and stuff and humans were only the lice that fell off of him.

Kat, that does sound... well... weird. XD Ohh, Japan...

The Ovid one, from Metamorphoses, is kind of special to me because I was taking an astronomy class and and a mythology class at the same time that semester, and ended up reading it and learning about the big bang theory at... well, approximately the same time, I think. This looks like a decent translation...

Eh, I guess what you describe about the Japanese creation myth isn't really any weirder than stories about Greek gods eating each other and, well, having sex with everything. (They really got around, those Greek gods.)

indeed. that is a similarity, but the japanese have many many myths from different areas, like 100's of them and the one we read, the first God was born from this egg and the ooze that came out became the earth. I wonder if I can find it.

Y'know, come to think of it, the Ojibway story as it's told in the book we're reading pretty much starts with the creation of mankind and goes from there. Huh... *continues to browse Linnea's link*

Okay, it's been a long day, so, uh, I think I'll be going. Bonne nuit!

You can hear cicadas during the day, too, in late summer in Michigan. :) Actually, as far as I can tell you can hear them better during the day, when the rest of the insect/frog chorus isn't as loud!

How can you not have cicadas in Texas? Then again, Texas is a big state, so maybe its your urban(?) environment...

its probably urban. I know I hear them, but there are more crickets and there's definitely not any frogs singing outside m window. I hear squirrels on the roof all night. I know my grandpa's farm was filled with crickets and grasshpppers. You take a step and the things go flying everywhere!

It's great that you have the crickets singing, at least. I love how insects sound. :)

depends on how you look at it. While I prefer the silence to dormies, I find the sound of cars passing on the roads to be a very soothing sound where the squirrels I want to shoot.

It's the insect/frog chorus in summer that I find soothing. And the quiet, in the quieter seasons. (It's also much darker in the county in the city, so on clear nights you can see the stars and everything.)

We don't have too many squirrels. Or rather, we do, but they mostly stick to the woods across the road.

I love seeing the stars like that! Its actually pretty nice on campus, I can see more stars here than at home though campus is so well lit.

The squirrels live in my backyard I think. doesn't matter than our two cats live outside, they aren't stupid enough to chase prey they can't catch! I did see a nice large comet during the Persaids meteor shower.
