Yeah! The trick is getting a clear night without a full moon. In Michigan, the first part is a rare enough thing, but I really can't complain. The stars are beautiful. :)
*blinks* Did you see a comet, or a meteor?

yeah, I love stars. they're so beautiful they make me want to cry!!
I think a meteor is an comet or asteroid that hits the atmosphere, so I guess a meteor.

A comet is an icy ball that orbits the sun. If one hit Earth, that would be... well, bad. Asteroids are chunks of rock, sometimes big ones, left over from the formation of the Solar System. And then there are meteors, which are the streaks of light you see when little chunks of rock or metal fall through Earth's atmosphere. If bits of them survive and actually hit Earth, they become meteorites. Before they fall, they're meteoroids. According to this they may come from asteroids or comets. :)

so I was right. I was seeing meteors, but it was a comet before that (or asteroid). According to the simulators, Comets are the most likely to bring about a cataclysmic event is they strike Earth. I was playing with the stuff at R.A.D.A.R Some place in New Mexico. I think its radar and not radio. Or was this simulator at Meteor Crater?

Now I'm lost. :p Comets in particular tend to make news. And they have names. What comet was it? (Or when, might be a better question.)
Anyway, I should be going. It's time to get my weekly comic book fix and stuff! And to go home and finish reading 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is probably the reason I'm in an astronomy mood today.

@Kat (when you come back): I wasn't sure what you were talking about when you were referring to the simulators and stuff. (And I still don't.) Meteors don't tend to be big news. I mean, they tell you if there will be a good shower, but that's really about it. Comets have big, predictable orbits and names, and they hang around in the sky for a bit, like strangely-moving stars with tails. They make news, especially if cults get involved. (Hey, it's happened.) So it's easy to tell the difference between a comet and a meteor. Meteors don't last long at all, if you're lucky enough to see them at all!
As for asteroids, most of them hang around in a belt, but sometimes they escape. I'm positive that if one came close enough to see in the night sky, the internet would be buzzing. If this is the one Zephi is talking about, apparently we're in good shape. :)

It was this...simulator. how else do I say it. Its simulates what will happen when a comet, meteor of other spacial body hits the earth and which will cause the most damage. They say it was probably a comet hitting earth that caused the dinosaur extinction because they stay mostly intact going through the atmosphere. and I never said they were the same thing!! I saw a meteor though, during the persaid shower.
I know asteroids and comets can break out of their orbit and get really close to planets. the internet would buzz, though probably not with facts. *goes to look at link* oh, I know about that one. I saw something about it on the Discovery/Science channel

That is probably the one Cica. The only thing is that I heard ONE thing about it on the news a few years back, I guess 2003 might be right, and then nothing. No updates, nothing at all. So they might have been wrong. O_O That's kinda scary. lol. But I'll be with my hubby so I don't care what happens as long as we are together.
I missed the biggest meteor shower of last year :( It was cloudy and too much light polution even if it wasn't  I really wanted to see it. I stayed up for that reason in fact  I missed 2009's highlight :(

I never see meteor showers and its really too bright in the urban areas and the sky is overcast. I snuck out the back door to watch the persaid (Am I even spelling it right?) a while ago and I was so glad I actually saw one. a pretty big meteor too!

I didn't know if you meant an online simulator or what, Kat. :p And you did sound a little confused back there, and confusion is contagious, like yawning.
Anyway... hi Lostin! Sorry for popping out. Busy rotting my brain with more Sailor Moon. Which is finally showing signs of an overarching plot.

I never watched it as a child, but I have this ongoing curiosity about pop culture I mostly ignored in the '90s. When I was a kid. Anyway, that sounds like fun, Lostin. I haven't seen that one yet. Though now I want to see 2001: A Space Odyssey.
