Yeah they do but not always. 1984 is like my perfect dystopia novel, it's what i use as an example of one for people.

I wrote a paper on Dystopia and Utopias for my class last year. I read the novel The Beach, by Alex Garland. Fantastic book. Ya'll should check it out. It is very strange though, and some stronger language, but I loved it.

Everyone should read that novel, Wings. The one that has stuck with me the longest over the years, though, is The Giver by Lois Lowry.

I really need to start broadening my horizons with dystopia novels..

Omg Cica, I reread that book last semester (I read it in 6th grade for english class) and I was just wow. I remember loving it as a child, but I didn't understand it at all as a kid. That book is scary in a lot of ways

Read the Beachhhhh~! Srsly, Wings. Really good, it shows a good transition from a utopia, and the downwards spiral...

Me, too, Wings. :) And I'll have to check out The Beach, too. Apparently it's also a film!

Wings, I'm sure The Giver was my first dystopian novel. Animal Farm probably followed shortly thereafter, but I know I didn't get Animal Farm the first time I read it. XD

there's these sci-fi books that are kinda distopia that I got some of my ideas for the Sanctuary from, wings. its a trilogy and the first book is called the white mountains, or something. I wish I could tell you more but I don't remember more than really liking them. they're books my brother got and never read.

Aw, you should, Wings!

The only Rand I've read is The Fountainhead. It was, um... interesting.

Have you The Postman by David Brin? (The novel is way better than the film.)

Alex Garland. It's not long, and can be a super quick read. It's written in a diary type of sorts, and a little jumbled at times, and there are some trippie moments, but the message and everything was great. and the ending was hella amazing.

I heard about the film, but I've yet to see it. I don't think the film could even WISH is was as good as the book, considering that there are so many things in the book I just don't feel could be portrayed. Sometimes just the words give you so much more.

----------

Damn ya'll, we should start keeping a list of recommended books at this thread or something. Who ever recommended it could type a few sentences about it, to get an idea of the book. I always say I'll read something, but I forget to write it down, and I'm too lazy to search through the thread.

A film is rarely, if ever, as good as the book it's based on. Just saying. :)

Especially take a look at like, Stephen Kings books vs the AWFUL movies they've been made into.

No i haven't. I watched the beginning of the movie though and nearly died. That was a Kevin Costner film right?? My dad made me watch it after I enjoyed Waterworld. but dear god the beginning of the that movie was boring.

I started Fountainhead, I intend to finish it someday, when I have time to set aside for a 1000 page book.

We do need to Kitteh.

and my next dystopia novel will be The Outsider, I found it really cheap at a book store and it sounded really interesting.

we shoud like copy down what we've said thus far and pm it do facade.

Wings: Yeah, it was a Costner flick. Luckily, I think I read the book first. Even Tom Petty couldn't save the film!

I'm still in urban fae novel mode lately, but I will eventually get back to dystopian and post-apocalyptic books, I swear.

I don't know kat. here is a book called The Outsider that i'm talking about which is a dystopia novel, but it's less fictionalized than most. and then there is a series called The Outsiders (based off a book called The Outsiders) that everyone has heardof.

Have you seen Waterworld Cica???

I guess I'm not a huge Costner fan. Though I do want to see Dances with Wolves.
