Hmph...I'll have you know that at the time I retired, I was a Senior Program Manager.
How's that! Sounds impressive, yes?
That's my title. What I actually did was go to meetings and make charts. Pretty charts.
For that I got paid the big bucks...

@facade: it's true that it is pretty broad... but i guess that was the appeal to me... i liked that it could kind of work anywhere... i guess i figured that i'm not really good at anything, just mediocre at lots of things, so might as well make a major out of it haha
i used to volunteer for the big brother big sister program :D i thought it was a really cool thing for kids who needed guidance, but maybe your aunt did more office type stuff rather than actually working with the kids
@cica: that native american history class sounds awesome... i am even more jealous now lol
@jean: computer science is a good choice since we all have them now... and that job making the pretty charts sounds ideal, although it seems it might have gotten boring after a while

@Linnea: Ooh wow, it's a small world! :P Funny you used to work for Big Brother Big Sister too!
She's not much of a children person, overall... lol. She's a 34-year-old single gal, and pretty happy about it, too!
Although she doesn't like the office setting, either. I'm not quite sure what she wants to do, but she's been at this interior design firm for almost eight years now and the place might have to file bankruptcy and close, since it's a small company... :| So I dunno what she'll do!!
But yeah, it's a very great degree to have. And a very smart choice! Communications is actually one of those Recession-Proof degrees, or so those economic advisors on TV say...
@Jeanne: I bet the charts weren't even all that pretty. :talk2hand:
But wow, you're retired? Lucky you!! :D
That's really cool that you had such a high-up job.

Linnea: Well, that, and I'm sort of running out of humanities classes to take. And I don't want to take art history, which sounds deadly.
Jeanne: Comp Sci is always a practical choice, in this day and age! :)

At the time I graduated, there was no such thing as a personal computer.
We used card decks for our programming in school.
At IBM we actually had "terminals" or monitors. Plain green text. I'm not sure how they made them, but I remember one time I was sitting in the terminal room (we all had to share 5 terminals), I noticed some liquid coming out of the monitor.
My manager freaked, made a phone call, and next thing I know, there's a hazmat team, complete with white suits coming down the hall.
Turns out that somebody who was there before me had spilled some water by the monitor....

@jean: hahahahaha that' a great story!
@cica: art history most definitely sounds deadly...yikes
@facade: i guess it was that program that got me into the kid thing... i recently quit my job at a group home and before that i worked for the upward bound program... lots of teens, like 80... and my current job is a live in nanny... so i guess something good did come out of college after all, when you look at it that way hehehe

Jeanne: Wow. You are old school. XD
Linnea: Not that the history of art is dull, but it always seems better in the context of a history or literature course. As opposed to sitting in a dark room with slides of paintings, trying not to fall asleep...

That's great, Linnea. It's a great thing to do (and, btw, also looks great on the resume).
I've never volunteered for something like that.
I worked my way through school, and after I graduated, I worked 60 hour weeks at IBM.
I just could never get up the time to volunteer.
I had intended to volunteer after I retired, but then I had to spend all the time with my Mom.
Now that she's gone, I really need to look into doing some "give back" stuff.

@Linnea: Ooh, do you make good money as a live-in nanny? :o
See, these are the interesting sorts of jobs that make me wonder if I SHOULD major in Communications... I love the idea of all of the possibilities, I just know that I'd be overwhelmed choosing where to start. lol!
@Cica: Agreed about the history of art! I think an Art History course would actually be entertaining... The whole idea of Art History has always made a small part of me want to become a museum curator... But then again, I think I'd get bored after a while. I don't see myself doing it for all that long. xD

Facade: I did attempt to take one art history course, years ago. It didn't work out, partly because of the sitting in the dark room with slides of paintings. But what made it hard to remember things, really, was a lack of context. Art has it. It's important.
H'lo, Lostin!

well jean, it is never to late to give back... that is the glory of volunteering, but i'm sure you know that already :D
@facade: i get paid pretty decent and i don't have to pay rent or for food so it works out ok... i am single and still pretty young so i figure it is a great way to travel... i hope to head over seas once i figure out if i really want to be a nanny after i leave this job in 6 months... people have kids all the time so the demand for nannies/au pairs is pretty high
hey lostin, all done filling your face? :P

LOL, Jeanne!
You're lame. D:<
I should come visit you in Texas sometime, and totally bother the crap out of you.
Maybe you can teach me how to surf the web with an abacus! :o
@Cica: So true! :yes:
Paintings tend to speak more without the needless analyzing... It should be a personal thing, and not some generalized explanation!
Some teachers can make things interesting, though...
One of the worst things about classes is that some people just aren't cut out to profess/teach!
Which is just... idiotic. Some people don't realize just how important teachers are in students' development...
@Linnea: Wow, sounds like a LOT of fun!!
I want to travel too, with whatever I end up doing. :P
I've always wanted to go to Peru, ever since I was like eight years old. I don't know why, but I'm determined to go there one day!
@Lostin: Pfft, no problem! :heart:
Get well soon! :gonk:

Jeanne, you give new meaning to the phrase "computer virus." :) Sweet dreams!
Facade: No, it's not the analyzing so much as the memorization. The analysis is important, but again, in some sort of context. Just memorizing what artists go with what paintings just... That's pointless.
