Linnea: In a nutshell... What used to be America is now called Panem. It is divided into twelve Districts, (well, thirteen, but the last one is allegedly not really there anymore), and the Capitol which rules them. The Capitol is a rich, hedonistic place, while the Districts, each with their own industry, are poor, essentially working to support the Capitol's lifestyle.

To keep the Districts suppressed, the Capitol selects 24 tributes -- children between the ages of 12 and 18, two from each District, one boy and one girl -- to compete in its annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death in a booby-trapped arena. This is sort of an essential-viewing realty TV show for everyone in the Districts, and the Capitol, though the Capitol people take it somewhat less seriously. To them it is bloodsport to take bets on... The winner of each games brings a year of relative fortune to his or her District, and lives a life of ease. The rest go home in body bags.

The books follow Katniss and Peeta, Tributes from the poor coal-mining District 12, through the games, wherein Katniss
