Oh lol I just think that the content that they were used to thinking of could be stretched so far with imagination that it is either so terribly creative that they keep it to only words instead of creating something more from it, and they could get depressed that life does not already have something like what they described. Although, the inspiration for such an idea probably roots from something that exists, or a compilation of several. So it's not terribly depressing in the end, (like they realize that, lol)
Another way that they could end up so broody is that the ones that they love, it does not work out with them.. When i say this, sometimes that is because the famous poets are more often ones that are from further back in history, once more of the poems have been found (considering that a poet will unlikely release all of his works lol...too unsatisfied or embarrassed by some), and back then, diseases were a lot more common, and so were strict social rules in the realms of dating or courting or whatnot. And if they have love poems or happy poems, I could see it more often being directed only to those that they were thinking of when they wrote it, and not to all the world. There are TONS of love poems out there... Lol it's crazy, so there's no lacking in that area. Sometimes people go online to look for nice love poems to show to whom they admire, if they do not feel they could write something sufficient enough themselves.
Well that is just my thoughts on it lol. Feedback? =)

oohh... I see... so the more popular types of poems were the kinds people could relate to their life? (pain/suffering/etc?)

Well yeah, if you watch there is usually some sort of twist to it, or some controversial issue is brought up that they wish would change. If it isn't for that then it's just their plain enjoyment or they usually only share with a specific group of people. Like there are poems which I could see me only keeping to myself that you gave me while other (different) ones might be published in a book. It doesn't mean they were never written : o

Hey. Im new here so a bit nervous. Anyway I love poetry, reading and writing, so here's an original. Let me know what you think.
Brothers
The younger brother is whimsical.
He watches over us as we sleep.
Delights our mind's eye with illusions, magical.
But, be warned, not to venture too deep.
He can also be sadistic and cold.
Taking pleasure in our pain, revelling in our fright.
For who can imagine what will enfold,
During the unearthly hours between darkness and light.
The older brother is petrifying,
Yet he grants relief to our pain.
Enigmatic, sudden and terrifying,
Man's indiscriminate bane.
And, as we must all obey God's every whim,
When our time has come, we must depart unto him.
P.S its based on the greek myth of Thanatos and Hypnos a.k.a Death and Sleep, but I changed it and made it Dream. Death is older and Dream is younger.

I like it! Thanks for sharing.
The way it flows is nice ^^ It's enjoyable to read.
The couplet at the end somewhat confused me, but overall I like your word choice and angle.

Just to clear up some confusion about the couplet, the "him" refers to death. So Im saying that in the end we all have to die, no choice. Hope it makes things clearer!!
