I've managed to stay clear of any sort of debt for a long time. Other than visa which I pay right away and only use for online shopping.

Her job they reposes stuff. O_O. I would NEVER sign my name to anything that would do that...I wouldn't sleep at night.

Same. I'm paranoid enough without that sort of hassle.

I wasn't mad, though, I knew that it was coming because my ex-husband couldn't pay for it.

Ex's suck, mine still hasn't found a job and I haven't seen CS from him since January.

I don't know what you guys call it over there. We call it "Hire purchases" or "Rent to buy". But it's where people can buy stuff like TVs, computers, PS3s, washing machines, dryers etc. For small payments each month over a period of a few years etc. There are some people who can't keep up with these payments - I'm the one who calls them when they first start dishonoring payments, or getting behind. I give them a friendly reminder that they're in arrears and need to catch up before they get late fees. Some accounts get a lot behind, and people don't stick to arrangements we set for them. That's when we take it further and our credit controllers in the branch go out to their house and find out what's happening. And if we still can't get any joy outta that, that's when we send prepossession notices, saying PAY THIS OR YOUR STUFF GETS TAKEN BACK!! Most people respond to that, but for those who don't we take the stuff. Which they still have to pay for, coz they've signed a contract - stating they wouldn't get behind and we could take the stuff back and sell it, if they did. And that's where the other side of my team come in. They deal with hardcore debt. Chasing people who have moved houses, and we can't find them anywhere. Asking relatives questions about their whereabouts, screaming at people on the phone coz they don't pay their bills etc etc. lolol.

We generally call it rent-to-own. But it's the same basic concept. With the exception of things like cars and houses which are all on loans from a bank and can be respossessed. With the exception of getting the cash upfront and buying it from a previous owner... you can't really own either of those any other way.

Really? You don't have finance companys that give you loans for cars??

Yep, but usually they're at a high interest rate unless it's a bank you already store your money at. Speaking of that, I should see if i could get my car re-financed by my bank...

Ahh right, that's like here too. We got a loan from a finance company at xmas. We're regretting it now. Got 2k and we're almost paying back 4k. Ridiculous.

This happens all the time. It's sad.

Well, luckily I'm buying my next vehicle from the owner directly. It's gonna cost me $2.5k, but I'll be getting a lot back on my tax return and he said I can pay him the last $500 in $50 incriments.
