we all know he stereotype of WOW players and people who go to anime/sci-fi conventions. you know what i mean, the over weight, balding male that lives in his mothers basement as well as an alternate reality somewhere in cyberspace. well i'm not talking about him :P
i'm wondering what people think about adults that still love anime or role playing games or anything that is considered "geeky"what do you think of the 30 year old wow players you see at conventions in full cosplay?
is there an age when we should "grow up"?
oh and by the way, as most older geeks do, i do tend to find that stereotype to be offensive lol

I'm still quite a few years away from being 30 but I have no problems at all with older people who are geeks. I think it's naive and selfish to think that things like WOW are only made for the young to enjoy.
Of course, I think that as adults their fandom level should be more responsible. Real life before online stuff and the likes. Realistically, I might be in my 30's before I've really established my life and career after college... and that's when I'll have the free time and extra cash to spend on geeky things like a subscription fees for online games, cosplay outfits, etc.

I think Adult Geek is the name of a hentai site. But um, aside from that, I don't see any problem with people doing what they love at any age. It does surprise me sometimes when people are that old and still into these things, but I find that interesting actually. XD I mean, there's a lot of teenagers and young adults that are into it but you don't see as many older people and it's kind of cool that they can still have fun and do silly things like dress up as characters and go to conventions. Really I feel bad for the adults that are boring and just go to their jobs everyday and then come home and watch the news and clean the house and do boring adult things. I don't want to be like that. That's how my parents are and have always been. They are the typical boring adults. But my mom is a little better in my opinion now since she joined Facebook and started playing games on there... Especially the farm games. I'm glad she's doing something fun and silly for a change. I'm twenty three and even at my age I have seen people act like people my age are too old for avatar sites, even though if you look around there are a lot of people in their twenties on these sites! It has started to really get on my nerves when other twenty-somethings act like they are way outside the norm for being here. They really aren't, in my opinion.

I am almost an adult geek. I'm only twenty, so I could still possibly grow out of it. >.> Or not.
Anyways, I applaud older people who aren't afraid to get their nerd on in public. Family cosplay is the best though, dressing up the kiddies and all. So cute! ^^

I'm totally a geek! I'm not that old yet, (just 23) but I think could be considered an adult, with the things I have accomplished, and amount of responsibility that I've taken on at an early age. But, all of my interests and activities all scream geek. I make frequent visits to thinkgeek.com, I play way too many video games, I love sci-fi and fantasy novels, I even have a shirt with a caffeine molecule on it. lol

I know a lot of people that are late 20's early 30's that still are into anime and dress up and things like that. I think it's cool because it shows they still have a childish side and aren't taking life too seriously. This is just as long as they don't let it interfere with their lives and actually work and stuff like that.

Well there is no magical age that makes you become an "Adult" when you hit that magical number lol. I'm thirty-one and still play dungeons and dragons and video games. I also dress up for Halloween.

@luster - it seems the most money you have to spend on geeky thing the more you money you need for other things, you know, like food and shelter lol
@vickicat - i had no idea that was the name of a site like that lol. i agree that boring adults miss out on all the good things :P my mother is on facebook to and it's a little weird when i update my status to something i would rather her not not see but she plays those games to.
@RisikaFox - i seen a family cosplay of ichigo, rukia and kon and i nearly died from the cuteness factor
@Skaudie - it seems all i do in my spare time is watch anime or read fantasy novels :P and i think i NEED that shirt
@mystic - everyone needs a childish side or else they would make boring parents lol
@kole_locke - i'm 21 and still dress up for halloween and sometimes even go trick or treating hehehe.

I'm almost 24 years old and an adult geek myself. There's nothing wrong with it.
It's just that back when my generation was teenagers, all the technology was really being invented and developed: video games, computers, the internet, and all that stuff and since we were the only ones who used it, everyone got used to the idea that only teenagers are into technology and video games and being geeks and stuff.
All of it is entertainment and adults enjoy entertainment too. My parents like watching television and movies, those were around for them to watch as a kid and they never "grew out of it" and there's nothing abnormal about that and no one ever questions it. It's the technology that was around during their generation and the entertainment they got and it's normal.
So yeah, I'm never going to grow out of it and I'm PROUD of that. Glad other people of my generation aren't growing out of it either.

I'm just barely coming into the adult geek category.
I'm newly 20 and I love me some manga, occasional cosplay, and OF COURSE I still dress up at halloween! (I saw you mention that earlier.) I look so young though, that I'm pretty sure I could get away with trick or treating even now. :P
One of my greatest pleasures is when I am sitting in my class and someone starts talking about anime. A kin spirit!!! I could go on for HOURS about all my favorites. Or when me and my friend start arguing about it over a game of poker.
Between work, school and an apprenticeship however, I don't have much time or money to dedicate to my long-time hobby anymore, but this April, me and a group of my fiends are going to ban together and go to the Nashicon as a cosplay group! (Local anime convention.)
Oh and as a side note, my boyfriend's dad has been playing Everquest since it came out. He plays it EVERY night. In fact he's been playing so long that on Christmas he receives a christmas card from Everquest that is HAND SIGNED by the makers themselves!!! He's one of the coolest guys I know! And he's like 50-something!
As far as I'm concerned, if being geeky is what makes you happy, then by all means, do it till you die! I think you're that much cooler when you're just doing what you love!

When I went to Ani-Jam 'bout two years ago, I did see a few people who were pretty old (ya know, 30's 'n such) dressed up. I didn't have a problem with it. But as long as they aren't the stereotypical, big fat sweaty adult geeks stalking people, then I'm fine XD. But hey, if they want to do that, they should go ahead and do so :3

I think the "geeks" are going to blend in with the "normal people" perfectly in the future as the technology advances. Sure, roleplaying and other geeky hobbies might still be concidered weird by many people but things have changed a lot since the late 90's. I'm sure they'll keep changing.

I'm only 22, but I'm the youngest in my group of friends (other than one guy's new girlfriend, who's 18). Most of our group is between 25 and 28 years old. And we all still play DnD once a week, a bunch of us play WoW when we can afford the subscription, or LoL since it's free. Heck, and I'm probably the least geeky in my bunch of friends.

QFT.
I also agree with Vickicat; absence of hobbies, one would consider geeky or not, is much more boring, even disturbing than otherwise. For instance, my Mum has a friend whom she has known since high school, and this woman collects, of all things, teapots. And she is actually quite fun to be around. I pity the adults who have lost touch with their inner child; adults who believe there is no room anything they could consider frivolous in life. In these "frivolous things" are many joys of life, and eschewing these for respectability can actually make others lose respect for you.

the main issue i have with being a geek in my early twenties is that around here we are a rare breed. it seems all the geeks around here are 14, not that i have a problem with them but it would be nice to find more people my own age with similar interests... that aren't half way around the world lol

Oh! I am suddenly reminded of an event that took place early in my first year of college. One night after mid-terms were over, my roommate and I had our door wiiiide open and we blasted the original pokemon theme song from my surround sound system! We danced up and down the halls, singing along at the top of our lungs. And to my amazement, at least 6 other girls burst from their rooms at random intervals and joined us in belting out the lyrics and dancing like fools! Most of them were not even into anime any kind of geekdome, and yet there they were!!! It was, dare I say, a magical night on the fourth floor that night.:heart::heart::heart:

I'm 21, still young, but an adult nonetheless. I whole heartedly love anime, manga and watching cartoons rather than documentaries and whatnot. Last year, I went to an anime convention and cosplayed, and I certainly wasn't the oldest person there. There was a man who looked like he was in his 60's there dressed in costume!
My father also has never "grown up" more than his shoe size, and frankly I love that. I never want to grow up, even though I know I'll have to physically. Mentally, though, I feel I will be the age I wish myself to be!

I'm only 19 but I know I'll still enjoy to watch anime and cosplay. I want to still enjoy to watch anime no matter how old I get. Besides cartoons are for everybody, there's no age limit to how old is too old. Think about it, adults are the ones to create the cartoons in the first place so I say Adult Geeks all the way! (I know I'll be one!)

I still have '-teen' on my age, but in three short months I'll be twenty. =/
I go to anime conventions. I play WoW. Most stereotypes just aren't true. Personally, I don't actually know anyone who -does- fit in the geek stereotype completely. There's also an interesting line between geeks and nerds. Because I'm also a nerd because I know how html works and can css a profile without help, I can write my own actionscript for flash games, and I sat through a year long class on C++ and actually understood it. I'm a bit rusty now, but the fact I have interest in such things and have a basic comprehension of it doesn't make me average.
Funny thing about being female and playing WoW. My existence as a female gamer isn't acknowledged within the community itself. Even funnier to be one of three females in a class of thirty for that C++ class. Not only is it unexpected, but I've also been dissed because of it. Because apparently females don't know anything or are incapable of any sort of hardcore gaming. Uh huh. Yah. Sure. Keep telling yourself that. Not only can I beat you at your own game, I understand the programming code that the game is running on. =P
As for anime... I don't necessarily fit the fangirl stereotype. I have my moments, but usually... its a closet hobby. Yaoi? Sure. Yuri? Awesome. But remembering that I'm lesbian IRL, of course I don't have a problem with these things. *shrug* Doesn't make me a 'rabid' fangirl. I actually haven't read any fanfiction in..... a long time. o-o
