This story was inspired by the song sang by Charlene Oliver titled "Never Been to Me" This is my story idea that I got from it.

She gives them a week to decide if they want to try to seek paradise. That next week as the summer approached, Mary and Luke discuss over a drink at the bar and decide neither one have anything to lose. This is the first page and a half of this story which I have written just recently.

Part One

The white clouds flooded the skies with huge fluffy flakes covering the ground. Luke enjoyed watching the snow as the day drug on. The dining room was a dark place with dark walls and carpet. Luke walked around the dining room straightening the table cloths and making sure the caddies had Sweet and Low and sugar. Luke knew that his boss was not a very nice person, and if he was in a foul mood, it made it that much more unbearable. After straightening the tables Luke stood by the furnace as it radiated warmth. As March approached Luke could not wait for the spring sunshine to come in and bring life to Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Luke loved the snow as he grew up with it as a child in the western part of the state in the Alleghenies, but he was ready for some vacationing weather so he could travel and find a real job instead of waiting tables. His pale skin reflected the harsh winter that had already happened thus far. His long wavy brown hair began to lose its color as well as it began to look dull. “Hey come on now, don’t be taking up all the heat, I’m trying to heat this whole place!” his boss scolded him as he came around the corner. Luke moved out from in front of the heater without even responding. The aversion he had for his boss was considerably high, but the fact that he was trying to save money up to move kept him in that place along with the bad economy. Luke walked around to the bar on around the corner of the other room and saw that Jenna, the bartender had three of the usual patrons who frequented the pub on a regular basis drinking Miller Lights or Bud Lights. One particularly was a good plumber who was in his fifties taking care of his mother and was an alcoholic. The other two were carpenters who worked whenever work was available. One lived far out of town and usually managed to make it four days out of the week despite inclement weather. The other was a short man who sometimes would pay Luke to give him a ride home because he would be too inebriated to drive home. Some of the Luke’s female co-workers didn’t like him because he tended to get a little too close for comfort at times. “Any tables yet?” Jenna replied as Luke walked by the bar. “I wished…” Luke said shaking his head. The patrons were mumbling amongst each other while Jenna sat there and listened with a bored look on her face. Jenna was a woman in her mid thirties who was like a big sister to Luke always looking out for him as she bartended. She was an average woman with a small frame with warm hazel eyes. “It’s about 12:30, I’m sure the lunch rush will start soon” she smiled with a positive attitude. Luke looked outside the front door and the area didn’t have many cars going by and few people were out and about walking around the area. Luke smiled weakly, “You’re right…” he said continuing back into the kitchen to refill his coffee cup trying to stave off sleep from boredom. The cooks were all nice young men and during the day were crucial when the rushes finally would hit. Some of them would come in with hangovers or some drunk. Luke kept remembering times when Thomas had come in drunk and Derek, the owner of the pub, would tolerate it. From time to time they would get into cursing matches in which Derek would Thomas come back because it was much more difficult to train cooks how to cook things exactly as he liked them than it was to find and train new wait staff or bartenders. The bad thing about being a cook was that you had to work in the kitchen with Derek whether he was in a foul mood or not. Being called an idiot was just one of the names that he would say to his cooks whenever they didn’t do things exactly as he liked for them to be done. Luke had witnessed many instances of cooks walking out on the owner because of how he seemed to like to use his power to make his employees miserable when he was, and that was usually most of the time it seemed. Luke filled his mug with fresh coffee with some Half and Half and began to sip it as he continued his stroll around the pub watching for customers. “Aye yi yi yi!!” Derek roared from the kitchen. He stormed into the bar and looked around, “Mother fucker…goddamn retards!” he mumbled under his breath. Jenna and the other patrons gave the old man a cross eyed stare as he stormed across the bar to his office and slammed the door. “Good and stay in there if you don’t mind!” Jenna muttered under her breath. “What flew up his skirt?” a young man asked as he escorted his girlfriend to the bar. “Don’t mind him…” Jenna waved her hand. Luke came around the corner as a thin middle-aged lady came through the door. She had long blond wavy hair put up in a pony tail and was wearing a long black coat that came down to her knees. Slowly she walked around and then approached the bar. “Are you guys just drinking today or would you like to eat as well?” Luke asked the young couple as they walked in. “I think we will just drink today thank you.” The man smiled as they sat at the bar. Jenna noticed the other woman at the end of the bar. “Hey, I’m Mary, and I was asked to come in for an interview?” she inquired. “Oh ok, well I don’t know if this is the best time…” Jenna trailed off. “Their boss is on a rampage!” one of the patrons butted in. “I am not, please keep your comments to yourself, I aint got time for that bullshit!” Derek barked. His mustache made it look like he had some dog like qualities. His shaggy salt and pepper hair and bushy eyebrows were endearing for his friends as they called his schnauzer back in the day. “Calm down Schnauzer, I was just joking…” he tried to defend himself. “Shut it!” he snapped back. Mary looked at him through her glasses with disdain. “Who needs to see me?” he asked looking around at the bar. At that point Mary wanted to turn around and go look for employment elsewhere.

Part 2

Luke walked back to the front of the dining room where Marise was rolling silverware. “I just heard Derek screaming again, so what’s his issue today?” she asked not even looking up from her task. Luke sat down at the front table across from her and started to help her roll the big basket of silverware. “He’s just being his charming self” Luke joked. Marise nodded her head and continued rolling. “But there is someone applying for a job here that I think he will hire” Luke finished. Marise looked up at Luke with her deep brown eyes as soon as she finished the next roll. “Who is it?” she asked curiously. “Some woman, they’re in the bar now” he finished. Marise jumped out of her seat and disappeared to the other side of the pub to see who it was. Luke finished his roll and jumped out of the booth and followed her around the corner.
“Can you start today?” Derek quizzed Mary. “I can if I’m needed to” she said without hesitating. “Let me go to the office and get you an apron and you can get Marise and Luke to show you around.” He said walking back to the office, catching a glimpse of Marise and Luke as they turned back around to go back to their duties. “Come on guys! Why don’t you do something productive around here for once will ya!” he complained mumbling under his breath. Mary sat at the bar waiting wondering if this was the right decision to come to this pub looking for a job. Marise and Luke went back to rolling silver ware. “My back has been killing me!” Marise complained. “What did you do to it this time?” Luke asked with genuine concern. “I slipped down the stairs because Jacob didn’t put the kitty litter on the stairs like I had asked him to.” “Ouch!” Luke contorted his face. “I’ll be alright” she said finishing up the last roll of silver ware. “What about you and that guy Daryl? I hope you finally broke it off with him.” Marise continued. “I did…” Luke started as Mary came around the corner with her apron in hand. “Hello, I’m Mary, Derek told me to come and see you guys about what needs to be done.” “Oh hello, I’m Marise, and that is Luke. I’m hosting today, and as you can see we are totally swamped” she said sarcastically. “Nice to meet you Mary” Luke greeted. “You too, I can see working for your boss isn’t going to be peaches and cream.” Mary smiled. “Oh no, definitely not” Luke agreed. “Well, let us show you the kitchen” Marise said leading them away. “We have all of our condiments on a tray which we put on a tray at the end of the night after filling them up.” Marise stopped to take a breath. “We do a list of things when opening. First we clean the nasty bathrooms. Then we do our kitchen work such as making tea in the morning, make sure we have sides of salsa and sour cream made up for the day. We also make our own salads as well.” Luke finished. “It’s not that difficult once you get used to it” Marise smiled. “You guys got customers up front!” Jenna shouted from the bar. “Time to get to work” Marise smiled leading them back to the restaurant area of the pub. “Five of you for lunch?” Marise asked as grabbing menus. “Yes please” the mother replied. “I want chicken fingers!” one kid whined. “Don’t worry honey, I’m sure they have them now let’s go sit” she hushed her youngest son who was a small toddler. “You can follow me around for a couple of tables and watch. Don’t worry you will get paid training pay which is at least minimum wage.” Luke replied. “So how do you guys set up who gets the tables? Do you do it by sections or what?” Mary inquired. “We do it by the number of people you serve. The host usually seats and gets the drinks and then passes the tickets off unless he or she is really busy, then we have to do it ourselves.” Mary took it all in. “So can I ask where you are from?” Luke asked. “Dover, Delaware” “What brought you here?” Luke continued. “It’s kind of a long story” she finished. “Ok, well when we get more time to speak we’ll talk more about it.” Luke agreed as he saw two more people walk in the diner. “Two for lunch?” Luke asked as Mary took a menu for herself and began to study it.
