'Kay, I only read briefly, but it appears that there were many Saint Valentines - common name in olden days I guess - and that none of them were patron saints of lovers. Valentine's day is the day that one of the Valentines - who was martyred - was buried. Chaucer's "Parlement of Foules" is the first historical reference of Valentine's day being a romantic event.
