Ohh, I used to do that all the time! The cry of panic when I would wake up to find the television running was quite a common noise in my house, followed by the sounds of frantic scrambling to reach the off button before my mum could come in and see the little red light. Doesn't happen so often now though since our reception got a lot worse, now it takes quite some time to even get the T.V. to work on any decent channel.

I have terrible insomnia, and recently I've been put on medication for it, but before that I would always write or read a book and listen to relaxing music. Studies say reading is the best thing you can do to help you go to sleep. The worst thing you can do is just lay there wide awake trying to force yourself to sleep; it's stressful and generally doesn't help at all.
So I recommend reading. Preferably something that's not going to keep you riveted and glued to the page. XP
Also, nice music can do wonders, and make sure it's not very loud. Just some quiet background sound.

Most nights I have a horrible time falling asleep. Usually it helps if it's raining outside or if I have a warm cup of tea. Since I was little, having the fan on helped me fall asleep faster (more for the noise than the feel). Silence is a must besides my fan being on.

I try and stop thinking. I tell myself to go to sleep. I repeat the word "sleep" over and over, I pray, I try to start a dream, I wait till I am so tired I will pass out as soon as I hit the pillows... Those are the things I do To sleep.

i kinda do the same with making up stories.
but not really.
i don't make up stories.
i think of things that make me really happy.
for me it is usually a place i have been and want to visit again.
or i think about what sweet things my boyfriend has done for me that day.
or i think of family members that have passed away.
any of these make me float away to sleepy land.

Usually reading a book or role-playing in my head. By role-playing in my head, I mean I'll just make up stories and play them out in my head until I fall asleep. That's how I come up with a lot of my ideas for writing, too.

I don't reccomend this but if your having a real hard time falling asleep, I take a benidryl. It makes me drowsy.
You should always do the following before you go to bed.
Stop drinking cafinated beverages 2-3 hours before you plan on going to sleep.
That includes: Tea, Soda, coffee ect.
Turn off any electronic devices. They can inhibit sleep patterns.
Relax. Your bed should be a place of relaxation. Don't do anything stressfull in it.
You should only use your bed for sleeping and making love. Otherwise you assosiate your bed with thoes things that cause stress.
I got these tips from the Today Show. They have helped me a lot.

I've done the benadryl thing, but only because I wanted to eat some strawberries and I don't have a choice but to sleep once I take benadryl.

I listen to music when I can't sleep.
Total nerd -- the Final Fantasy soundtracks always relax me enough to get to sleep. XD

I usually have a drink before bed to help me, but it has to be cold. Not warm. And as said before, I thinking about things that eventually turn into dream :) Or nightmares. ;_;

lots and lots and lots and lots of exercise both mentally and physically. If I'm not tired both mentally and physically, I tend to not be able to sleep :d If I'm tired only mentally, I would want to move around and If I'm tired only physically, my mind will make up stories so much that I can't sleep properly Xd

I don't sleep much anymore, until I've been up for over twenty-four hours and then kind of crash out of exhaustion..but yeah, that's not very healthy is it? ><"
If I can get my cat to stay in my room though, she'll curl against my leg and eventually her body heat will warm my bed up and make me so hot I get sleepy.

Breathing and localized relaxation exercises. I'll focus on on part of my body and let it relax, then move on the the next part.
Another good stand-in is this: Warm a mug of milk and stir in a teaspoon of honey, a teaspoon of brown sugar, and vanilla to taste then stir and serve. It's not exactly healthy, but it's very soothing.

Depends on what is causing the problem. If its the weather I either add a blanket/sheet or take a cold shower. If it's something on my mind I try to check that. . . but this one is tricky and usually I just get stuck. energy=exercise if my mind is just racing and won't shut up I sometimes try to put something on to watch cause it will distract me enough to manage to focus on that and then fall asleep. . . but doesn't always work.

I try to stop tihnking and go to sleep but then it all happens like:
Stop thinking Taffy...
STOP THINKING!

Having the window open. Seriously. Like, my house is right by this intersection of a medium-small street. I have the window cracked so I can hear the cars and the wind and what not. ^.^ I love it especially when it rains and it's kind of cool outside. If it's really cold though, I have to shut the window *sigh*

I have some problems going to sleep at night. sometimes I will read a lot of manga online, even some fan fictions they get me sleepy. looking at some random show on the tv,having the dark with a dim light on. have my dog in my bed under the blanket with me and my old stuff animal hugging it.
most of it helps at other times just playing a online video game. till I can't beat it helps me fall a sleep once I get tired of loosening.
