And I realized last night at the cloak looks good on. I won it during the Treasure Hunt at the Valentine Event.

Oh, cool. It does look nice. :)

I'm doing alright. I finished off a couple of books from a trilogy thinking it wouldn't bother me to not have the third book and I was wrong. So very wrong. Now I'm scrambling to find something else to read. I'll probably be making a trip to the library later on today.

I hate when that happens. You think that you can wait for a sequel to a good book but it;s tough.

I've got a cold, but I'm doing pretty well otherwise. I've just been watching a few episodes of my favorite show Psych on TV.
I like the cloak. It's pretty. ^_^

What book trilogy was it Scribbled?

The Vows and Honor Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey which includes the books The Oathbound, Oathbreakers, and Oathblood. I bought the first and second book from the used bookstore a couple days ago and ordered the last one through the same used bookstore. I've read them before which is why it's not going to be too much of a hassle to pick up another book or two before the last book comes in for me to pick up.

The trilogy is set in the same universe as the Heralds of Valdemar books but in a few of the countries surrounding Valdemar. The main characters are a pair of female mercenaries - one focusing in melee, the other focusing in magic - who travel together because of circumstances from before the book starts. (The trilogy is actually based off a short story that Lackey wrote for an anthology.) It's one of her earlier works and I like it better because I feel the character development is much better than some of her later books, including and especially some of the Heraldic trilogies. One thing I have to warn you about is that she's very frank about the perils that a woman faces in that sort setting especially as a mercenary. She never goes into graphic detail but she is upfront about the fact that rape is a definite possibility for these women in their line of work and it does happen. The writing overall is a little rough and has the feel of older fantasy books but as the trilogy goes on it's a little more refined and, if I'm recalling correctly, the last book is the best.

Part of the reason that I like this particular trilogy so well is because I discovered it when I was younger and it features strong female leads that are practical people with good senses of humor and who are totally capable of taking care of themselves. Yeah, some romance happens in the second book but it's very well done and not in the traditional pretty boy/man sweeps pretty girl/woman off her feet and takes care of her for the rest of her life kind of deal.

I didn't mean to write you an entire review! I promise!

I'm glad you wrote that much. You've piqued my interest in the trilogy and now I want to look for those books. I've been needing a good book to read that I haven't read before.

That sounds like a really interesting read. And good to see female characters that can take care of themselves.
I'll read a traditional romance once in a while when I'm looking for something light to read, but none of them really stand out to me. I like it a lot more when the couple has a kind of witty back-and-forth going on. And they're on equal footing.

Same here. That's why I love Jane Austen's novels. Those romances weren't so "boy meets girl/ boy sweeps girl off her feet".

If you two like fantasy settings in your books I'd recommend both Mercedes Lackey and Tamora Pierce. The authors have their ups and downs (they both feature queer characters, Pierce sometimes glosses over her queer characters, for example) but I've enjoyed reading their books. Pierce is more likely to be found in the young adult section of your library while Lackey is reliably found in the adult fiction.

I'd definitely suggest checking the books out from the library before buying them to make sure you like the authors. They're hard to find in used bookstores otherwise I'd suggest picking them up used.

I bought a very nice hardback copy of Jane Austen's work with gilded pages for my partner but I myself have never read her work.

I think you might enjoy Austen's work. And I've been meaning to stop at the library this week so maybe I can on Monday and take a look for one of those authors.

I'm totally due for a trip to the library. I haven't been in a while. I'll have to check them out.

I need to read more of Jane Austen's work. I've only read Pride and Prejudice so far. Do you have one you suggest Liztress?
