Moving gracefully over the cobble stones, Divine twirled and danced around to her hearts content, it was night, the moon shone bright on her own private haven. A back alley that fed into a circular area around the backs of the whores living quarters, it was lit only by the luminous intensity of the moon. The childlike smile filled with innocence showed pearl white teeth which contrasted with her grim covered body. And they treasured her, even bought her fine clothes, though somehow they always ended up on the floor of her room.

The rags that she wore did nothing to make her small body any less womanly, and that's what they worried about. That someone might one day catch sight of her, and take her from them, or worse yet, rob her of that innocence which they treasured. Even with the fact that she was gone all day doing god knows what, she came back each evening before the sun set and slept for a little while before going out to dance in her little world.

Verna, the eldest among the collective was only forty-seven, but looked to be truthfully in her twenties. She made sure to keep Divine clean and clothed, not to mention setting girls to be her care taker when the need arose. She was something of a mother to the younger girls, and like a sister to the women of her age. Divine ran up to her and gave her a hug, making sure to have taken the back way in as instructed so that she wouldn't be seen.

"Be careful, some of your sisters have gone to heaven, there's a mad man on the loose." warned the woman as she hugged the girl tight, and a somber moment passed between the other women. Nodding Divine hugged her back and then squirmed to be free, running to her room to hide, as she heard a man's voice inquiring at the front door.

This strange yet peaceful existence was all she'd known after her escape, but she was afraid of men, and only a man could turn her key. What a situation this was. The night was just beginning and it seemed to be a long one indeed.

She couldn't say that she wasn't overprotective. If only she could have her own children, she wouldn't need to find her happiness in her family's children.

Sighing she made her way to the floor donning her mask, which was full faced and was almost immediately swept up by a bachelor who was hoping to gain her favor and become more powerful by his ties to the King. She didn't bother to smile at him, but barred her fangs at him behind the mask.

And then almost by force was turned into another mans partner within the next two minutes. Time moved too slow for her liking, she was not a woman of the court, she did not like games of flirtation and politic. She was at best a philosopher, and would like to remain that way. One turn led into another, then another, each face blurred before her until finally she begged a headache and left for the safety of the infant Prince's cradle.

"You know, we're not asking you to marry, but maybe you should allow us to introduce you to a few men who would be happy to give you your own bundle of joy." said the Queen from behind her, who was now sitting on her throne, and admiring the love she saw reflected in the girls eyes.

In a honeyed whisper that was barely a breath, she responded with utmost poise and grace, "Your Majesty, it has been confirmed by your physician's that I shall never bare a child, I'm happy to be able to love the Prince like he was my own however."

In saying that she would never be able to have a child of her own, it struck deep and made her want to cry, then she remembered where she was, at the ball, in front of thousands who looked upon her as little more than just a pretty face with connections, some thought this with snaring position in their minds, others with jealousy, some just did not care. Why should she?

After removing her mask, she lifted the baby from his cradle and handed him gently to his mother then resumed her vigil by the throne, watching the King with hawks eyes as he continued to converse with that man, Alexander. She'd do well to remember him, he wasn't going anywhere soon as she hoped.
