They think I'm moving too fast. Dad didn't start dating mom until he was 26, and he didn't ask her to marry him until he was 28. But... see I met Liz when I was 18, we've been living together since I was 19, we started dating when I was 22, and I asked her to marry me when I was 24. By the standards of my peers, that's... waiting a helluva long time. >>
Mostly he's concerned about the legal implications of a same-sex marriage in the states and wants me to wait until its legal in Indiana (not going to happen. GOP is trying to put a failsafe on the already-existing ban on gay marriage just in case Lefty comes in for another try.) He even said "wait until Obama's second term. Things are really going to change then." I don't know if Obama is going to have a second term. People are pissed that the magical black man didn't automatically change everything, and the things he did change were things that they didn't like (but, ultimately, things that he mentioned in his campaign.) And even if he does get a second term, it doesn't mean squat. Even if it becomes legal, people are still going to ostracize us. Fifty years after Civil Rights in the 60's and people STILL rubberneck at mixed-race couples.
He said that I don't have to get married, but neither did he. Some people WANT to have a wedding and I am one of them.
Also, since we've declared a long-term engagement, we won't be getting married until after the purported second term anyways... >>
He's okay with us living together, and he's very happy for me, but its okay as long as I can pretend she's my roommate and not my wife... which I still can. He's worried about the same things Liz is worried about.

Ahh. Yeah I can see where all that would come into ones mind.
Well, the only thing I can think to say, and I know you probably have already thought this, and it doesn't really help anyway, is:
Sometimes, you just have to say fuck it with the world and what they think, even teh people who's approval you may really want. Sometimes you just have to do something radical, or extreme, no matter what anyone else says. If that's what you're heart is leading you to do, and what you feel is right for you, then you should grasp it and rejoice in whatever that may be. For you, it's marrying Liz. For me, it was keeping Shey. If you fallow you're joy, all the other stuff will eventually slip away.

YOu made me all teary-eyed. ;_;
I pretty much already said "fuck the world." About the time I came out to my parents, actually. They were the only ones that I really cared about knowing, so I told them. I've got a new attitude. I can't use the "I can't get married because I'm gay" excuse any more to feel all self-pitied. I am SO OVER self-pity. Its time for self-actualization. I'm 24, damnit. And my stupid decisions are MY stupid decisions.
RRRRROYAL RRRRRAINBOOOOOOOW!

No decisions involving ring pops are stupid.

I coudln't agree more!
So did you actually give her the ring pop when you proposed or did you just go straight to the real ring?

The script version:
Liz comes back from the bathroom to find the box on the table.
Liz: "What's this?
Me: -pushes the box towards her-
Liz: concerned, unsure, opens the box and pulls out the ring pop.
Me: "Liz. I want to marry you."
Liz: -finds the smaller box beneath the ring pop, and opens it. (For a moment, I wondered if she'd heard me.) She takes out the ring and eyes it for a moment-
Me: -puppydog eyes, sincerely worried that she would refuse because she hasn't said anything in over a minute-
Liz: -puts the ring on her finger and reaches for my hand-
Waiter: -comes by with a giant slice of cake-
Liz: "We'll have to talk about this later, when there's less people around."
Me: "I completely understand." -squeeeeeze-

Awww! :-D That's so cute that you actually used the ring pop :-) I hope, one day in the future, I'll get a unique, sweet, "just because it's the way we are" kind of proposal like that from someone. You two give me hope that a relationship where you can both truly be yourselves with each other and have it be fun and comfortable even after years really can exist ^_^

Of course, we have a lot to do before we can set a date, so we're taking it slow on the planning stages. But mostly I'm just glad that I got it off my chest. I thought I was prepared for if she'd refused, but now I don't know if I would have handled it. If I'd waited any longer, I think I would have chickened out. xD

Neat! May is a good time to have a wedding. Beats out the June brides, so venues are less expensive.
I was thinking about having an early fall wedding. September or November, thereabouts. But not for a few years from now.

I was unaware that September was good luck. Everyone here gets married in June as tribute to Hera... though, I doubt they know exactly why they get married in june... traditions, I suppose.
