It's not. There is no answer to that riddle, it's not supposed to have one, that's why it's so ridiculous.

According to the authors notes... there is no answer to that. He only made up the riddle to put in the book.
I'm a little obsessed with Alice in Wonderland.

oohhhhhhh...... I got it now >.>
the last time someone said that it was because Poe wrote on both :P
EDIT: Poe, as in Edgar Allan Poe. He's the one that wrote a poem about this suicidal raven (short description, the poem's better, trust me) and it's called "The Raven"

my favorite answer to the riddle is:
"Because Poe wrote on both."

This is the most correct, but he was pestered so constantly about the stupid riddle that in the preface of the 1896 edition he wrote:
Quote:
|
Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: 'Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all.
|
Basically, so many idiots completely missed the point that he had to make up an answer after the fact just to shut them up.

people tend to over-analyse stuff a LOT. It doesn't matter if there's an answer or not, because people will always try to make there be one. therefore, all answers are correct in their own way. my guess would be because both are black as ink (because of the inkwell that goes with a writing desk). as long as an answer to the riddle seems logical, then that is your answer

I feel the complete opposite. It changes the entire dialogue if the riddle actually has an answer. It ruins the irreverence of the hatter and simply makes him a dullard.

Since this makes me think of Poe, I'll do a morbid answer.
Eventually, the worms will eat them both.

Spot on, spot on.
The Hatter was mad -- why should his riddles have an answer?

This "riddle" irritates me, honestly.
There is so real answer, as it was made without one.
And I have heard it a thousand and one times this week. ARGH.
