Welcome to the Vegetarian Hangout Corner! Veg*ns of all sorts, as well as curious omnivores welcome! This is a place to celebrate veg*n food, share veg*n recipes, share stories, learn more about vegan lifestyles, discuss animal advocacy, chat and HAVE FUN!
To get the omnivores involved (or else this would be a sad, sad thread indeed; there aren't many vegetarians out there...) there will be a Question of The Week prompt for all to take part in.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL? WHY?
(Last Week's Question: What's your favorite vegetable? How about fruit?
--> interesting, varied answers. I don't think ANYONE had the same answer! Impossible to declare a winner!)
RULES:
1. Follow the Menewsha ToS
2. Be RESPECTFUL of the different eating habits of others--not all veg*ns are the same.
3. Omnivores do not start trouble, or you will not be able to share in the discussions.
4. Like rule 2, do NOT push your food agenda onto others. I expect debates, but civil debates going over pros and cons. No insults, no name-calling.
WHAT IS A VEGETARIAN? (and other terms)
Vegetarians are people who do not consume animal flesh. Many to most vegetarians also do not wear or use animal products or products that were tested on animals. There are many disctinctions of vegetarians. The all-encompasing term for all these distinctions is veg*n, because it can stand for either vegetarian or vegan. Vegetarians who eat EGGS and MILK, animal bi-products, are called Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian.
WHAT'S A VEGAN?
Vegans are people who do not consume ANY animal product whatsoever, this includes milk and eggs. There are different types of vegans (like raw vegans), and many reasons why people become vegetarian or vegan, which you can learn about in this hangout thread and through links you'll find here.
WHO ARE YOU? My story...
My name is Ode. I've been a vegan for about 7 months now. I went straight from Omnivore to Vegan in a night after watching a very moving picture, Peaceable Kingdom (will be available in links below soon). My partner had a few months of veganism on me at that point. I told him: "As long as you can find me a suitable, non-disgusting replacement for my milk in the morning and cheese, I will be a vegan." And I did find those alternatives--I drink Soya milk and enjoy Parma grated cheese from the market, among others. I love and fully reccomend daiya cheese, which is a new product that is hard to find (you can get it shipped to you), but oh, it's delicious! Anyway, as of right now, I am completely vegan, with the exception that I still consume honey--I don't actively seek it, but if it's a small part of a product, I'll eat it. I love to cook! Hopefully we can get to sharing recipes on this thread soon!

Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes - by the million in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year, sends out cards praying for Peace on Earth.

WHY GO VEG*N?
In our little hangout, there's no pressure to change your diet. But there's plenty of reasons why you should, and it would be wrong and neglectful for the curious passer-by not to have this very essential information. There are many reasons why people become vegetarian or vegan. Mostly, it can be broken down into three categories: health reasons, environmental reasons, and lastly, ethical reasons. Some also become veg*n for political reasons. Not to stand out in a crowd, but because by becoming veg*n, you are changing the power-structure: YOU become the controller of the standards of your food and saying to the food industry that consumer needs come before profits.
To go into all the benefits of a veg*n diet and the pitfalls of an omnivore diet would take me a few posts at the least. I might get around to it at some point but instead I'll leave some helpful links down below, for now....

A Vegan Diet...
I chose to include the vegan diet as the model for all vegetarian diets because a) it does not include milk, which is pretty iffy in terms of how much it actually helps the human body (see links for more info). Eggs are usually fine in a diet, but because both eggs and milk are byproducts of the chicken and beef/veal industries, it is better to leave them out of an ethical diet.
Vegans and Vegetarians need to watch what they eat to make sure they're getting the right proteins and nutrients. Veganism in a Nutshell -- The Vegetarian Resource Group has an easy guide to getting the right nutrients in a vegan diet (hint: it's pretty easy).

Tested & Digested:
The BIG LIST of Recommended Recipes
Here's where we share our food adventures! These don't have to be recipes exactly, they can be food stories, too. Example: "The Best Veggie-Burger I ever ate..." or "Recipe for the mock-chicken baked pasta I had last night" or "Check out this disaster of a cake!"
I plan to build a list every time someone posts something to be included in this list.
BTW, if you have pictures of your food--share them!
We'd all like to hear about eating out adventures as well. :)

Implementing this to start a discussion - everyone welcome to participate! I will be tallying up the scores of favorite fruits and vegetables to see who's the winner!
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VEGETABLE? HOW ABOUT FAVORITE FRUIT?
Mine....
Vegetable: Tough...but I'll go with zucchini. I eat it in nearly EVERYTHING.
Fruit: Peaches!! Though I hardly ever get to eat them.

Vegetable: Probably some form of pepper, be it red or green...unless we're counting beans, in which case it's every bean.
Fruit: Probably banana because it's the easiest fruit to eat, and it also makes me feel awkward at the same time! I'd like to see an apple try to resemble an erect penis!

Wow, what a well thought out thread. I'm not a veg*n by any means but I am curious about the diet and lifestyle.
My favourite vegetable...that's a tough one, but I'd say potatoes for their versatility in cooking. In salads I like lettuce and carrots...amongst other veggies which I can't think of at present and other ingredients.
My favourite fruit tends to change with season....I'm not sure what avocados count as but I like them very much in salads and in sandwiches and I like avocado smoothies too....I also like jackfruit although it's very expensive and hard to find where I live. Out of the fruits that are readily available where I live when in season, I like oranges and apples because they're refreshing and sweet. Mangoes because they're delicious and bananas because they're convenient and nutritious.

Hello again!
Wow, cabbage! Didn't think I'd hear that one, haha. I actually don't mind it but I don't have it too often. One time I did use it in place of pasta, oddly enough, cut it into tendrils--it was oddly good! O_o

I used to LOVE meat. Give me a steak and I was happy. I realized though I only liked the texture of the meat and whatever sauce/spices I cooked it in...also I realized once I left home how expensive meat was...so...it was pretty easy to "give it up" and buy inexpensive tofu or something else and treat it like a peace of meat.

true, true...
Dont you think that the vegan diet is a bit too harsh and not quite healthy?! I mean, I don't mind vegeterian diet, at least you get enough proteins from chicken and essential amino acids from fish!
And may I ask why the vegans don't have eggs nor milk? Soy milk doesn't taste good... And it's not like I drink milk, only when I have cereal/coffee/etc...

Vegetable: Hmmm...it's hard to tell what's a vegetable now that my AP Bio teacher is telling me cucumbers are fruits. But I'll say lettuce. Iceberg lettuce is really yummy to snack on.
Fruit: SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM~ But I'd have to say them good ol' seedless grapes.
