I was on livejournal earlier today, and even though I go on LJ all the time, I just recently found a HUGE roleplay community.
I was totally excited and I super honestly wanted to join in, because I've been rping for about 11 years and it's a huge part of my life, but I only have one serious rp partner.
But as I was reading through the community and some of the posts and the rules and the applications (you have to APPLY for the part of a character), I realized that I didn't know 80% of the lingo and that the mods/RPers were super serious about it.
I got scared and didn't apply because I was new to the community and didn't want to be the 'fresh meat'. I was also scared that I'd do something wrong and get dropped right away. Not to mention, I don't want RPing to be so serious that I worry about "meeting deadlines" or having to go check my status every hour to make sure no one replied and I didn't miss it. I have a life, but I want to RP and do it for fun.
Has anyone else experienced something like that? I never felt so excited and so lost in such a short period of time. Now I just feel disappointed. :(

I've been there. I found this awesome site on Proboards. The rules were pretty simple, at least the forum rules. But, the role play rules. There were so many I didn't know what to do. It got me so confused, not to mention everyone was posting more than five paragraphs. It scared me cause, I had just left a friends role play site and still learning. I never went back, but the story line was awesome that now I wish I had saved the link.

Wow, XD I forgotten I made this thread.
It scares me when the rules for the actual roleplay aren't simple. It's like you have to spend an hour or two going through them, only to not understand some of them, and then if you make any mistakes you have to worry about getting yelled out or being banned. And they're so serious, what if you're pissing them off by not conforming because you're new or learning?
Honestly...

One of my BIGGEST pet peeves of roleplaying is those stupid, dumb character "profiles"/forms that a lot, if not most, forums require of their users. I hate it, I hate it, I HATE IT. :stare:
Sorry, but that's a personal vendetta of mine. I think the process hardly contributes to character building, and teaches you nothing about the dynamics of character building to begin with.
I mean, really? You have to type out six paragraphs of character history in order to have a feel for where your character comes from in life? Really, you're going to write three paragraphs on their personality as opposed to playing it out and getting a hands-on feel for how they react in Situations A, B, and C?
People just love to pigeonhole and pinpoint from the get-go. I'm not like that at all, as both a writer and RPer, and it pains me to see it as such a rampant variable in roleplaying communities and sites.

Uhg, that just sound irritating. I know who my characters are. Just let me play as them. And sometimes, when it's not original characters, everyone else already knows who they are as well, and if you make any changed to that, it's OOC and that can be just as irritating.
There's no reason to be picky, rping is for FUN, people.

I RP almost exclusively on instant messengers with my friends, so even forum RPing is weird and intimidating to me. Even just saying that I RP in instant messengers, people are like "Ew, you one line" and crap, which isn't the case at all. I play with an exclusive handful of people who are very thoughtful in their posting, just quicker on their feet than your standard forum posts. I'm good for a few paragraphs when called for (I love to write) but some of these forum posts with each on a massive undertaking, it seems like so much god modding is going on. So forum RP gives me culture shock, but I can handle it.
Now people that RP on Twitter and Facebook, that really is odd. Posts limited to 140 to 420 characters. You really have no choice but to do one or two lines.
Also, not that I rp in lj or use profiles, but I think they can be useful. Then you have a basis and you know what you're aiming for to play your character instead of flying by the seat of your pants. There's spontaneous and then there's "Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that all of my character's previous love interests have been horribly tortured and maimed by a crazy psycopath obsessed with having their babies. I probably should have told you about that last month when we started, but it is so awesome I only just thought of it and...oh shit! The psycopath is at the door and she's gonna keel joo!" Having an idea of your character's background and motivations isn't such a bad thing. Just depends on how anal you get about it. Clearly Facade is on the other end of the spectrum when it comes to anal

I don't understand what sort of statement you're making there, but I'll let it slide.
Forum RPing, for me, is a lot more chronological and exacting. I've been a member of this one specific forum that I simply can't break free from for over five years now. I like to think of each 'thread' as an excerpt in my character's life, and as such it's easier for me to go thread-by-thread than to juggle three or four threads at once on one character. I love to RP in excess, just not with the same character all at once. Seems to lead to scenarios like you mentioned - suddenly blurting out random crap that really had no ties to the character until, uh, that very moment. Stuff like that isn't something I like, and as such it's better for me to go chapter-by-chapter through a character's life.
I agree that RPing over Twitter/Facebook is ridiculous. And I almost did join an LJ RP community, up until I realized that, well... Like the Pantalia pointed out, they can get pretty involved. Each community is like their own private website, in and of itself. It just seems... chaotic.
I've RPed a handful of times over instant messenger, but I greatly prefer forum style. It's easier to keep records of, in my opinion, and I've grown fonder of polishing my posts over the years - as far as RPs go, anyway. So I'll sit there editing and rewording until I'm wholly satisfied. Works for me, but I know it can be annoying for others.
My greatest love for RPing on forums is that - well, it's easier to intermingle with tons of characters. The forum I frequent has been around since '04, and has amassed nearly 10,000 users. While, yes, most aren't active on a monthly basis (plus, each account is one character; lots of alternate accounts run by the same player), there's a ton of variety. It's also practically a free-form world - the areas to RP are pretty open-ended, there aren't any race/gender/age limitations (for non-Gods/Goddesses/Avatars, however, you can't be above 2,000 years of age), and each account gets its own profile page where it can put any information that it sees fit. I typically use the space to link to threads (again, in chronological order, primarily for my own record-keeping), maybe insert a blurb or two here and there about my character, and fancy it up in between with BBCode.
Anyway, there's a ton of different ways to approach RPing, which is why I think this thread will be fun to keep track of. There are so many variations in style, both in writing and in format, that it's constantly both annoying and amusing to come across new RP boards. Most boards disappoint the hell out of me, but there have been a few gems that have stood out over the years.
