So what do people listen to, to help them through a break up?

Me, i go for Machine Head, i find theyre lyrics quite powerful and uplifting in some songs, they really strengthen my resolve at times.
I also go for things that are just thumping hard and angry, like Combichrist, Psyclon Nine, Slipknot, Static-X... and so on.

((NB: Please dont go quoting lyrics, just what and why it helps you is fine.))

None of the music I have ever listened to, while going through a breakup, has ever really helped the situation per say. I usually listen to music that relates to the situation like "Is This Love" from Whitesnake or "I Wanna Know What Love Is" from Foreigner.

I fluctuate between songs that express pain and songs that express moving on, but I do not have a specific artist (or even genre!) that I fall back on.

I have listened to pop, country, heavy metal, soul, Irish, R&B, indie, filk, and classical (in no particular order) in order to get away from or enhance my post-breakup feelings. Some of the songs don't even have lyrics -- I find Sigur Rós to be particularly good for being both sad and uplifting at the same time, without a lick of understandable lyrics.

As superficial as this sounds, Taylor Swift music.
Her songs may be stereotypical, but she gets me through and gives me hope.

Its not superficial if it works for you and connects. Thats the thing about break up music ive noticed, it can be the oddest stuff, but it connects with us in such a way that it provides some sort of comfort or help. Sometimes a lot more so than the other times when we listen to music!

Lol that's sweet.
I totally get you, though.
Because the lyrics are so generic, they're relatable.

The two best break up songs I have ever heard are the following

SR-71- She Was Dead
AMERICAN HI-FI - The Break Up Song (its great even though the chorus sounds similar to Blink 182's song First Date, which was out way before this song.)

They not the nicest songs to the other party involved but hey how many people really like their ex's after a break up?

Also SR-71- Right Now is a great break up song. Now that I think about listen to almost any song by SR-71 and you will work through any dark feelings. They are a great band that is very helpful with getting over the darker emotions, at least always had been for me. Its to bad there not together any more.

Oh and Assassin Taylor Swift is a country artist that has songs that can cross over to pop and do.

ox3tyi- there is nothing wrong with listening to her songs cause even if they are 'stereotypical' they still are the way that most girls have felt at one point or another. There is nothing wrong with Taylor's songs she is a great song writer.

I find Blue October is always really satisfying. Their music is really emotional, and a good deal of it is about topics close enough to being sad because of love and such. Especially on the album Foiled there's like a large undertone of bitterness or sadness or anger, depending on the song, so it's not hard to find something good for when you're lost.

Ohhhh man. For me, the hardest stuff I can find lol. Then again, it's the normal stuff I listen to everyday. It just depends on my mood. If I'm in a really bad mood, it makes my day feel better. If I'm already having a great day, it just makes my day even better. lol..music interpretation (imo) depends completely upon the mood, and (somewhat) lifestyles of the listener.

Haha, thanks guys.
I'm a big Taylor Swift fan, and her songs help me through a lot of hard times.
But I feel kinda guilty over how my songs are so mainstream, as opposing to the break up music you guys are choosing.

Ahh, but see, like Loveslust, i too listen to the harder sort of stuff day in, day out. Its just that while listening, after these occurances, i tend to find certain lyrics will 'jump out and smack me all upside the head' (so to speak) from a song im half listening to and then ill begin listening to particular stuff from that artist, trying to find something that i find describes what i might be feeling or thinking or what have you.

People would go through similar things like this in the same situation, but would pick different music is all. We all relate very differently to our music, especially in heightened emotional states ive gathered.

Metallica - Aint my bitch. First song I listened to after my girlfriend broke up with me last month. I find it appropriate.

Wow, just found a really good one from Slipknots album 'All Hope Is Gone' that i really like the video clip for. Was a specially made short film for the song, found on their Youtube channel if anyone wants to check it out. Its not one of their 'heavy' tracks either, its one of their more acoustic and step back sort of songs. Like it a lot.

EDIT: Helps if i name the song i guess? Its called 'Snuff'

No worries Kora, glad some one liked it too. I really liked the film clip for it too!

Im quite liking the more melodic and lamenting sounds of some of the songs on their 'All Hope Is Gone' album at the moment!

I personally avoided music in general where possible, during the immediate time/state after my last 'break up', due to not wanting to associate the music listened to, with that person/time, in future. That may well sound rather horrid of me. >.<

Generally though, I go by whatever I feel at the time. By this, I mean that I'm likely to listen to something that I can either relate to/feel as if I can, or that I know will make me feel chirpy, or how I need to in order to then later be able to feel chirpy, having gotten out whatever emotions that were in the way, for want of a better way to describe what I mean. My first port of call is usually Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan, RJD2, or something along the lines of Handel/Mozart.

The other person involved in my last 'break up', or er, not, depending on how you look at it, listened to Daft Punk, Avenged Sevenfold and Good Charlotte songs, from what I gathered/have gathered since then. Seemingly a mixture of upbeat music and rather 'down' emotional (to him) songs.

@Kora91, and your post on page one, regarding liking an ex after a break up. I'm on vaguely good terms now, in that, it's possible for myself and he to hold a decent conversation, should one be initiated, though the frequency of that actually happening is quite low, at present. Mostly because he hasn't come to terms with the break up yet, and we have rather strongly differing views etc. My apologies for that not being very relevant to the main thread of conversation/somewhat off topic.

Simple Plan is a good band for break ups. Haven't listened to them in a while.

Having never actually had a proper break up I don't have that many, but getting a rejection from one of my best friends and then losing another best friend due to my actions (two seperate occasions of singledom) I listened to songs such as:

'Teenagers' by My Chemical Romance
'Wake Up Call' by Maroon 5
'Karma Chameleon' by The Culture Club
'Protect And Survive' by Runrig
'Ride A White Swan' by T-Rex
'They Don't Really Care About Us' by Michael Jackson
'Blue' by Calvin Harris
'Worst Day' by Calvin Harris

Also funnily enough I felt that the song 'She Will Be Loved' by Maroon 5 was very relaxing :)
