4281 years ago, I was born. 4270 years ago, I was mortal. 4208 years ago, I started out on my own. Now I am as free as the small butterfly on my arm is. And now I am about as dead as the little butterfly that got squished under my boot.
I was running. Running as fast as I could to get away. The police had caught me. Wait-- those police were human. No police were human. Not since I was a kid. Who were these people?
I didn't know, and I din't care. I was runing for my life. But I shouldn't be scared. Why would I be scared? These humans were way farther down on the food chain than I was. Why did I run away from them? I could snap their little necks in a second!
But no, I was running, and I knew I wouldn't stop untill I lost them. So I took a sharp turn around a large stone building. Stone--? There were no stone buildings anymore!
I his in a small crack in the side of the building wall. The ground was wet from last night's rain. The concrete was covered with garbage from the horrible-smelling dumpster nearby. Hey... there was no more concrete grounds anymore! It was all solid metal nowadays.
Then I heard the police run by the small allyway that I had hidden in. I breathed a sigh of relief. Now I had time to think of where I was.
Then it hit me. Why wasI being so stupid! I was having a dream of when I was a kid. When I had stolen that food from the nearby grocery store. That's why the police were humans, why there were brick buildings, why I was so scared of the cops, and why the grounds were not metal.
God, I hated when I had flashbacks. They reminded me of when I was a powerless, little, boney girl. They reminded me of the days when all I did was steal, run, steal, and run some more.
Soon, I was awake in my bed. My hair was damp with sweat, and the covers were sprattled everywhere. It looked like someone had attacked me in my sleep. I wiped away some of the sweat on my forehead and looked at the doorway.
"Bad dreams?"

"Yeah," I nodded for Nayte to come in.
"I heard you thrashing around and I thought I'd check in on you." He brushed away a strand on pure white hair and kissed my pale cheek.
"Thank you," I heard myself mumble before giving into his kissing.
Soon, we were apart and he was looking into my eyes. "You have the most beautiful eyes," he studied me. "So round and violet."
I laughed. "And yours are so mysterious and green," I purred.
"I'm serious, Kiatra. You have a power within you that I cannot place. I've never seen it before."
"Oh, well." I shrugged and got out of bed.
"No, Kiatra. You need to take this seriously. I've never told you, but you need to know now."
"What are you saying? You have kept secrets from me, Nayte?" I was so confused. Not a good way to start the day.
He hung his head. "Yes. You... have powers that only... well, some old ones have... they are..." he stamered.
"Spit it out already!" I was becoming more and more paniced.
"You are a Kartei," he whispered.
