btw, if i do get my car back (which i should by that time) i was thinking we could (jason wanted to come too) carpool up to huntsville. i don't mind doing it, and i think driving up like that would be more fun, and we could all come back down together too. are you interested?

I don't think very many people do understand semicolons...

Most people don't as Kat says, but a semicolon should be used to separate two independent clauses, not just any two clauses. The sentence you wrote was a subordinate clause and introductory phrase (the if phrase) and the independent clause (the question), thus you need a comma to separate them instead of a semicolon

Because a lot of the time content wise it needs to be one sentence. Grammatically it may be a complete thought because it has all the necessary parts (subject verb direct object-if it's transitive verb-don't ask I don't know how to explain that just know it's the one that has a DO), but it may not necessary be a complete thought as far as explaining something goes. It's just the same as some sentences make more sense with a coordinating conjunction then as two sentences.

and sometimes it just sounds and looks good as one sentence. like mixing up the flow and type of sentence and all.
