Rei: I'm not the best when explaining stuff, but I try. I'm glad if at least some of that helped you understand it a little better. I've converted timezones in my head for some years now already so I don't have to think that much between changing times from one term to another, but if I don't know what the term for a timezone is (either in GMT, UTC, EST, PST, MST or CST) then I'm totally confused myself too ('cause those 6 terms are the only ones I'm familiar with). I think personally that the calculating what time it is is the easiest part within one term (since you only need to either add or take off some hours the number after the timezone term says to get it right) but the bit harder part is when you have to change the time between different terms. After all when the number is either + or - something after the term it's just a matter of calculation (to add or take off hours (though the twist is that you need to remember if you're not at the central yourself you can't use that number said directly but need to take in thought the number from your timezone too)), but when it's just the plain number (no + nor - but as in the time of clock) in front of the term and you'd need to tell what it is in some other term, it's not enough to just calculate the hours, but you also need to know the basic timedifference between the centrals of the different timezone terms.
