i haven't read the dark materials but i did enjoy the chronicles of narnia when i was a kid and again when i re read them before the movie came out. i can say the first movie was interesting but i haven't seen the second one and i somehow doubt i will.
-------------

but as far as fantasy goes i have been reading R.A. Salvadore's Forgotten Realms series. working on the dark elf trilogy collectors edition. haven't gotten very far into it though.

Side Note: sorry if i broke the topic in here.

if your going to go see any of the Narnia movies go and rent the BBC version of them. campy special effects but very good.

Now that we're talking about airships, sprockets and other tech stuff like that, I remember again this lovely book I once read, with a similar theme. There was a girl who worked in a factory, then escaped and started to ride a mechanical dragon thingy. Having sex powered her up more for it, and the dragon was a living mechanism despite being a tech thingy. There were also these true names involved that you could command another person if you knew their true name (not the one given at birth, but one attached to your soul more of) and could picture their looks in your mind while calling them. A boy, friends with the girl, revealed her his true name and later died, then she encountered his re-incarnations (apparently he died a few lifes) and tested his true name (that didn't change in rebirth) if it really was him and it was. So she could get help from him when needed too. It was the book 'The Iron Dragon's Daughter' by Michael Swanwick. I really recommend it, even to those who aren't normally into tech stuff books.

Yush, I'm here. Even though I should be reading/studying right abouts now instead. But I'm trying to give at least a little of my effort towards the team Gasket myself too so I'm here.

Just from that one little detail, I like the sound of that book. The author must have done at least a little research into Celtic mythology. That's a pretty important part of dealing with fairies, so I'd be really interested in seeing how the author managed to apply it to a science fiction novel.

yah it dose sound interesting.
knerd: the author may not have done the research into the true names. it has been an Idea that has been cropping up all over the place. the first place I ran a crossed it was in Elf Quest, although the Pini's called them soul names not true names, but it was the same concept.

Ah, ElfQuest. I've heard of it, but never actually read any of those books. The Wikipedia article on it is pretty entertaining.

I actually remember buying the original series of Elfquest in the comic store. The format was HUGE. Wendy really is a marvelous artist.

Hmmm, I suppose so. I have found it in a Dymocks store and also an Agnus and Robertson store. (I'm not sure what the American equivalant of these are)
And they are quite cheap, it's just only certain stores stock them and most are like a train and a bus ride away :/

"Song of Fire and Ice" always makes me think of a Ray Bradbury short story called "Frost and Fire."

HBO is about to start filming for the first book, A Game of Thrones. They're turning the book series into a long-running tv series like The Sopranos or The Tudors. :) I'm super excited about it. x3

Wow, that sounds pretty interesting.
I may not have the chance to see it, though. I'm afraid that my house doesn't get HBO. :(

So to cheer myself up, I've posted a new Science Fiction Book of the Day!

R is for Rocket by Ray Bradbury

I was never a big sci-fi novel fan, except for Kurt Vonnegut. Only he could insert alien abduption into a war novel and have it make perfect sense, and carry people through the universe in a giant bubble that reveals the meaning of life (which, surprisingly, isn't 42, apparently, according to some wacky people)

I also always liked Jules Verne, but I could never get into more then one of his books at any time period, they were just too.. big. o 3o
