my cat used to be my neighbors outside cat, so I guess we kind of stole her, but the neighbors seem to be happy about it.

she was starting to get pneumonia. she does every winter. and my mom was going outside to nurse her back to health so dad just let her come in.

Cats are pretty good about finding places to lay low in bad weather, especially if they have been outdoor cats their whole lives

I think some people just don't care and think a cat will find their way outdoors in winter like a n a native wlld animal. Then they might hide in cars to keep warm and be in a risky situation when someone starts up that car.

One of them had one of those plastic igloos, if I recall. I don't know if they all packed in there or not.

Our outdoor cat rarely came inside during the winter. If we tried to keep him inside he would go ballistic. Cats are tougher than you think.

the reason my neighbors kitty always got sick is because she already has breathing problems.

it is sad that people think that cats can live outside in COLD winters. what is even sader is that most state have rules against keeping pets outdoors in winter unless they have shelter, and that that stupid igloo counts as shelter even though it is not that much of one.

Indoors can be a hazard also.

I had a friend with a front-loader washer.

There had been clothes in there, and she went to get some more. She didn't see her kitty jump in. Then she came back and started the machine.

It wasn't until the machine was done that she found her poor little drowned kitty.

it seems outdoor cats live longer, guess because they are tougher.

@ GrannyJ: Omg that's so sad T_T

Chik - that's old for a cat!!

Granny - that is tragic.

We have a crawl space under the house. I've tried convincing Stitch that he should be an indoor cat. He complies for about 10 minutes before tearing the house apart to get out. Not sure if it's us or our other cats.

O.O Holy crap. That must have been horrible to find.

I think if a cat has been an outdoor cat they know how to take care of themselves. If they know where better shelter is they are not going to stick around their owners house. Our outdoor cat lived through bad weather, wild animals and a whole lot more. It wasn't that we didn't care about him, it's just that he was happier outside.

I really think it depends on the specific weather conditions of your area... I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping cats out somewhere with fairly mild winters, although I do think it's wise to make some kind of shelter for them anyway.

It's not just about whether they'll survive. Quality of life counts, too.

We do have a neighborhood cat.
He has his little routine, going to see everybody.

His name is Ernie, which I think is adorable. Somewhere in his past he lost his tail.

no matter where you live it you have an outdoor pet that looks to you it is the law in most states that you must provide shelter from the pet and food and water that is good.

I've heard of peopl's cats getting into dryers somehow and being killed.
I recall this sad post on a forum of someonjes' kitten who got into a dryer and was killed.

I think it comes down mainly to this. If the cat has always been an outdoor cat it more than likely knows how to survive. If you get a house cat however and try to make it an outdoor cat that is cruel. Most cats that have lived inside for so long don't have the same survival skills as those that have lived outside for so long.

I agree that you should take care of your pet as best as possible. Our outdoor cat for him it meant letting him run off outside until he wanted to come back and see us. You know I don't think he ever really belonged to us, rather we were some sort of family extension he would visit every now and again, LOL
