true they really are very equal with each taking the lead and then stepping back to let the other do so. they're cute though. and it's definitely a different kind of relationship we're writing. they've got an interesting feel to them that i can't really describe.

Stuff about how the marks work. Like I was considering how we chose for marks to appear not at birth but at puberty. Why? It would seem something is undecided before that point. A person's soul is probably not set until they've lived some. So if there's a huge age gap, would the appearnce of the older one's mark occur if their mate is not born yet?
Stuff all along those lines.

ah yeah. it's definitely something we need to think about. i mean we've got an 11 year age gap as our biggest.
but we also set up that i had tristian's mark appear early. so why would that. i mean in world i think it's something we can wave away in mysticism but as writers what is it. i don't know.
i was wondering about if there are people who just don't have marks in our world the other day or people who live to old age and never meet their mates. cuz like. i need a reason why tristian's dad wasn't in the picture cuz he was not his mom's mate and he is not dead. he's just not there and never has been. but i can't imagine him having a step dad either. it was just him and his mom. why.

I remember you saying before you didn't like the idea of some people just not having mates. But do you think a stubborn person might live out their life if their mate died before they ever met them?
Because yeah, Tristian's parents seem to go against our verse.
And actually, it would work well if there was a delay before Elias got his mark. If his came late, it would be all the more reason for his family to shun him and his lack of a mate. That would be a sign.

yeah i don't but i mean. people not having marks could explain aroromantics, so we could use it in that regard. yeah, maybe especially if he died young like right after tristian's mom got her mark.
there also could be like people who never get marks it means there soulmate died in youth? i mean we could play with it in ways like that.

yeah i kinda like that idea. how late is late though? i mean i did tristian's around 12 for absurdly early, so you could use that as your benchmark for late.

i think it takes sometime for the personality to solidify, and maybe it's like people are born with the possibility for several soulmates, but as they grow and age and change that number changes and slowly shrinks to one and that's when the mark appears? i don't know if that really works.

I think we already played with the idea of platonic soulmates though so I think even if they're totally asexual and aromantic, they still have a soulmate. Because that's not entirely unreasonable. I do think a mate dying in youth though would explain it. Especially if we say a mark can't be decided by then, it would just never show. Should they feel the death though...? :/ I do think it would be less traumatic if that knowledge came early in life with still so much to life. A person would want to live anyway even if they knew their mate died already.

I think it works with a universe of possibility. I don't mind that kind of story. It makes sense like that, but it could also be that the universe pretty well preordains who the mate will be but not 'who' the mate is so the marks appearance has to wait. But that's kinda weird. By that logic, the universe understands who people will be anyway so why wait to show it? Definitely a person can't be figured out from birth unless you have omniscient powers so marks and mates should be something that that's decided once the soul has solidified in shape.

yeah i feel like it still needs to be felt but maybe not as harshly, so maybe like on the day that person dies, the other one feel an achiness in the place the mark would later appear in life? something you could easily miss, but not near as harsh as if your mate dies after your mark has appeared?

i think like 15-17 was what we decided normal was. so high school age.

i like that. the soul has to take shape before the mark can. like. it could feed into nurture and nature. nature determines they will be mate, but nuture, who that person becomes determines the shape of the mark and that's why it takes a bit of time to form. and if someone gets a mark early or late is that a reflection on them or on their mate?
