I defended my dissertation proposal yesterday!! An hour and a half of pretty intense questioning and brain-stretching, but I passed!

@ zaza: I'm in my fifth year of German. Fell in love with the language as a freshman in high school, and I'm continuing it in college. Hoping to double up with Japanese next semester!

Waaa - what a coincidence that so many people that frequent this thread study/have studied German! I like the vocabulary and sound of the language - but the grammar is similar enough to Latin that it feels familiar but dissimilar enough that it kills me. Right now I'm taking an accelerated class in German. It's not extra-special or anything but we meet everyday so it's really fast paced, and counts as an entire year of study. I'm having a bit of a hard time.

You might want to switch to a slower class or get tutoring then. What level is your German class? Beginning, intermediate, or advanced?

It's not giving me so much trouble that I need to drop down - it's just a challenging class and language.

Huh. I always thought it was fairly easy. Apparently, my brain must be wired for German.

German was easy for me cause I studied Japanese and French beforehand, so I was prepared for the "Oh shit, verbs are going to the back of the sentence" thing. But yeah, xD; German is a nice mix between english and dutch, so if you ever wanna learn dutch!

Looks like that'll be nothing new when I'm taking Japanese then. Just look out for the irregular verbs!

Yeah, I felt that way when learning Latin and Japanese - German just doesn't click for me in the same way.

Still, look out for the irregular verbs, especially in the past tense--they'll kill you if you're not careful and don't pay attention!

Got it! Overall I'm doing fine in the class, I just love languages so I'm really hard on myself.

And yeah, verbs "go to the end" in Japanese too, just prepare yourself to dedicate your life to learning kanji! Ah!
