a good thing to send him is stanped, self addressed small cards.
like the blank ones you use for thank you notes and change of address notices to friends/family.
that way he can scribble a little somthing to you and keep your spirits up, too.

start marking the outside of the envelope with numbers.
that way he can keep track of which to open first.
some people love to open the last one first.
