Have you read any mythology collections you really enjoyed? I recall greatly enjoying a book on Norse mythology I read, and of course the Greek and Romans. I'm about to read the Kalevala, which is Finnish mythology. Anyone read that one or another interesting collection of myth stories?

I read a couple books on Greek mythology a while ago, though most of the books I own are on culture and life rather than the myths themselves. I have a collection of Celtic myths from various different areas of Celtic influence. (Britan, Wales, Germany and a few other places.) But I haven't read it yet, it's in my stack of books to read. Haha.

Oh cool. I should find something similar once I've finished my current set of books.

If you're interested in ever finding it, it's called Celtic Myths and Legends by Peter Berresford Ellis. Annnnd now that I'm looking at it it's got Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. And they're... extremely Celtic. They have that same kind of almost lucid dream feel to them that I've never really gotten from any other mythology. Though I don't know whether that's because of the stories or the author. -shrug-

I've read all sorts of mythology. It's interesting literature and it provides insight into the corresponding culture's way of life. Greek Mythology kidna makes me laugh...it's like...a huge soap opera. Egyptian Mythology is pretty twisted, lol. It's interesting, but twisted. Another reason I read it is because alot of words we use today come from mythology. Anything from everyday words to pyschological and biological disorders. Like..Hermaphrodite and Narcissim. That's usually why I read mythology. More for the references than the stories. While some stories are interesting, I just don't care for the personality traits of most of those so-called "gods" and "goddesses."

Well I checked my library and they don't have it so I guess I'll have to track it down and buy it or something. Thanks for telling my the title though, Nolori.

One you might want to try is 'Mythology: The Illustrated Anthology of World Myths and Story Telling' General Editor: C. Scott Littleton. It's a massive book, 688 pages with the index, and it covers from, The Cradles of Civilization (Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia), to the Celts, Vikings, and Germanic Worlds, The Eastern Worlds (India, China, Japan), The New World (Native American, Mesoamerican, South African), and the Southern World (Africa, Australasia). I love this book!

When I was little I got this book about Greek Mythology (obviously it was dumbed down so I could understand it at that age) and I read so many times I practically memorised it ^^
I love Greek Mythology. Always have, and I think I always will

Greek mythology is very cool. I think it helps that their Gods were so utterly human.

(Unrelated sidenote: Code Geass! I am on episode 10(?) I believe. It is so good.)

I ended up buying Edith Hamilton's Mythology book for a high school english class. I very much enjoyed it. It had a great list of myths, popular and the more obscure ones. If you're looking for a bigish book over the Greek myths, I suggest this one. :3

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I'm excited to try them all out.

I've actually had to put the Kalevala aside for now, because I have to read a work for World Literature. I'm doing Ovid's Metamophoses, which is a bunch of Greek myths centered on love and metamorphoses. It's pretty interesting so far. I've just finished the tale of how ravens became black. I'm only a tenth of the way through, so far! It's a pretty massive book.

I'm a Greek mythology person, Norse coming in a close second, mainly because of my heritage. I think Roman mythology is cool... it's just that all it is, is a copy/remake of the Greeks. As in, the Roman's plagerised their religion (how lame is that?). No offence to those that LOVE Roman mythology, I'm simply stating my own opinion.

That's exactly right though. They just changed the names and added a few new stories. Guess it was less work?
