I can't sew, period.
If I sew by hand, it usually looks like one of those kindergarten things, pull the yarn through the holes.
I cannot sew. I'm barely adequate, though, if I use the machine.

properly measuring and cutting are the most important parts most of the time.

I let my son help me use the sewing machine earlier ... I'm gonna be plucking those threads out of my blanket all day tomorrow before I can sew it properly ...

But the batting. How do you sew in the batting? Do you cut individual pieces and sew them into each little part of the quilt, or is the quilt more like a sheath for the batting?

well, right now I'm working with fleece, so I'm not worried about it. but I think the next one I make which will need batting it'll be two quilt "sheets" with the batting in the middle, and then some decorative stitches to bind the two sheets together and lock the batting in place

Mm.
We sell polymer quilt batting, and cotton batting. I keep staring at it, wanting to make quilts.
For me, the primary thing is that I don't have time. I'm not so much concerned with lack of ability. I figure if I keep to simple squares, then I should be able to make a fairly nice, serviceable quilt for my bed.

the one I'm working on is triangles but the next one will be squares. right now I sew a triangle to another along one side then sew those to another triangle made of 2 then I have 1 large square that has 4 different pieces of fabric on it. it's pretty time consuming.

we have always been here and always will ... allllwaaaaaysssss ...

lucky for me so far my mother keeps giving me fabric. she is SUPPOSED to be making a quilt too so she buys all kinds of scrap material and then decides she doesn't really want to use it so she gives it to me. I have more than enough to make a quilt. I'll just have to buy more thread and then the cotton batting ... except for the one I'm working on. I'm gonna need to buy a bunch of fleece for the back side of it.
