We weren't that fancy. Came over on the Queen Mary in the 1640s? Maybe a bit earlier, idk.
Haha, I think you are right. Everybody had a castle.

Evening all.

I wanna go to sleep, but the going-to-bed process is full of effort. >.>
Plus the bathroom smells very strongly of bleach, there was some mould above the shower which we sprayed.

Well, you are welcome to set up camp here, by all means. I'm going to have a quick shower, but I will be back shortly.

I brushed my teeth, hurrah.
The bathroom looks so much nicer, the paint is so white! xD

I have work to do this weekend, but it's alright. I have to read a 200 page book for 19th century lit, (Old Goriot), and plan a presentation for monday afternoon on What I Loved - but it's very informal and will not be graded.

Oh dear. How many hours of work will you be doing? I do hope you have enough time to read the entirety of the book, and prep as well.

Well, congratulations Hyena. I'm sure it's up there with Skull and Bones.

I should probably make my signature a link to that video. I keep getting asked about it.

Ooh, my dad went to Sussex.
Honourary degrees are a bit pointless though. Eddie Izzard has one from my uni.

I'm indifferent to Poe.
How about that 3D Gatsby adaptation though? xD

I was more interested in why he was being given the degree.
I haven't heard of that, Pearl. Oh dear. There really has been a dry spell of ideas in the entertainment industry.

Touching on the Poe thing again...
My first reaction was "what? Neeeeeeeeeeu?"
But the more I thought about it, the more curious I became to see that pilot.

I'm enjoying this new TV series starring Stephen Mangan, Tamsin Greig, and Matt LeBlanc.

The two Brits are writers of a successful sitcom which has run for 4 years, and The Americans become interested.
They fly over, and immediately the studio bosses cast Matt LeBlanc as the Prep School Headmaster and screw with it in various ways.
It's good.

It's not the best, but it's far from bad.

I can't help but like Mangan and Greig from their Green Wing and Black Books days.

Well, if you mean my post with the link earlier, then yes :insane: Fryyyy.
If you mean Stephan Mangan, who Pearl mentioned, then no.

Yes Stephen Fry! :P I love that guy!

I'm not sure who Stephan Mangan is. I'll have to look him up.

Mangan is another British comedian.
Yes, must love Mr. Fry. I haven't seen him on Bones, but I'm sure he was good. I don't watch much American television.

You should, Bigs. We churn out a lot of programming, so while that means there's tons of utter crap, there's a lot of gold, too. But then again, it's easy to fall in love with TV when you don't actually have satellite or cable, just a Netflix subscription. I can filter out all the bad and just absorb the good. Sit me in front of an Everybody Loves Raymond marathon and, yeah, I'll probably start breaking things and proclaiming a hate for television. But still, I have a vast mental list of favorite shows, and almost all of them are American. We make good stuff too. :)

Well, there are somethings that I will react to with "ooh, I love dat show" when they are mentioned. Community or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, for example. Then there are things like The Daily Show/Colbert Report and Futurama (I keep forgetting to watch the new ones :gonk:) that I quite like too.
I can't think of any American Dramas I'm into. 'Course, that may change if the Poe things gets greenlit. I was reading the comments on that link I posted, and someone mentioned that John Hawkes, of Deadwood, would make a good Poe. I wasn't familiar with him, so I did a bit of research...

And now I can say Yes. That needs to happen.

My top suggestions are Dexter and Lost. The former is best watched in order for the full effect (I highly advise against "just jumping in" or catching random episodes), and the latter will make absolutely no sense if you skip any episodes. The latter used to be available in its entirety on ABC.com, but it seems they took it down. Blast. Well, if you have Netflix, you can watch these. Or if you're fine with watching uploads, a quick google should be able to point you in the right direction.

Dexter is about a sociopath serial killer who is oddly sympathetic. His sociopathy is played largely well, and not "only when convenient to the plot" as many mental issues are dealt with in television. He works in the lab of a police station, but this isn't another stupid "guy with unusual talents helps the cops" show. He's usually working against them in some form. This is absolutely positively not a "crime show." I avoided it for SO LONG because I thought it was going to be The Mentalist or CSI: With a "Sociopath", but it's absolutely not and very good.

Lost is, as you probably know, about a group of people whose plane crashed on an island. The plot becomes very complicated, and is overall a masterpiece. I can't even properly describe it. Also, anything you've heard about "THEY WERE DEAD THE WHOLE TIME! THE WHOLE SHOW WAS PURGATORY!" was the incorrect babblings of people who didn't understand the ending (they were not dead the whole time, they were not in purgatory the whole time, they were not anything the whole time other than alive. Everything in the show "happened.")

Burn Notice and White Collar are quite enjoyable, if a little theatrical. They can get kind of showy for the sake of making you say "ooh," but it doesn't get stupid, and they're pretty enjoyable. It'll make a bit more sense if you watch the whole thing, but enough can be picked up within an episode or two to give you a basic understanding of what's happening, so with those, you can just jump right in. Recent episodes are on Hulu.

House is pretty good, if a bit formulaic. Again, it has story arcs, but you can pretty much just jump in. If you have a choice of where to jump in, I'd say that season 6 was their best season ever. Recent episodes also on Hulu.

Though short-lived, Firefly was amazing. I realize it probably falls under "sci-fi" more than "drama," but I really hate calling good shows sci-fi because modern science fiction... blows, largely. I just think of SyFy channel original shows. Blech. Anyway, it's probably the most realistic "sci-fi" you'll ever see. No aliens, just humans inhabiting tons of planets. Also, when there's exterior views of the ship flying through space there are no noises because there is no noise in space. Hallelujah. Firefly was canned after one season for reasons no one will ever understand, but not for a lack of quality.

The Walking Dead has finished its first season with all of six episodes, and I think the second season expects just as many, but it's proving to be an excellent show thus far. As the name might imply it's based in a zombie apocalypse, but it's handled extremely well. It's very character-driven. This isn't a "WE GONNA SHOOT ZOMBIES" thing, so don't even think of Dawn of the Dead. It's an adaptation of graphic novel series, if that's any help.

The show I'm currently watching is Six Feet Under. It had 5 seasons, and I'm only partially through the first, so I can't say too much about it at this point, other than that its quite enjoyable. Being that it's an HBO original, there's lots of drugs and nudity, but the writing's good. There's some very original characters which is quite refreshing. Definitely have not seen similar characters in 100 other shows, and they're definitely not blank placeholders or ridiculous caricatures. It's really good so far.

That list isn't really in any particular order, just the order I thought of the shows in. I think what I said about each shows will give you an idea of how good I think it is.
