I use some less-in-use words sometimes, but I can't think of them right now... My brain has already shut down for the night. Off to bed I go!

How many ruffles must a shirt have to be fancy?

two is a good start, but three or more would be better. Also, bows increase the fancy quotient dramatically.

I want a ruffly shirt, and I find them at thrift stores quite a bit, but it's always way too much ruffle for everyday wear.

Haha, that image came to mind, yes.
It's hard to make the oodles of ruffles look work unless you make that the tenor of your wardrobe on a constant basis. Or you could just alternate wildly different looks, so that it doesn't look all that out of place when it crops up again. I practice a mild form of this.

A nice blazer might help tone it down, too. What I dislike is when the ruffles kind of stick straight out from the chest a bit... Just what I needed, a shirt that visually adds weight to me.

Yeah. Are you top heavy too? I have a hard time wearing empire waists for just that reason (that and they are rarely big enough around the 'waist' to that they avoid riding up.) I have a few that I can't resist wearing, and the other day, while sporting one, I was told I make a beautiful pregnant woman. Or did you mean weight over all?

Nah, I meant overall. I'm actually pretty bottom-heavy. My small waist and chest are the only thing that make it clear that I'm not that big (since I don't wear skinny jeans or skirts, so you normally can't see the shape of my calves), so any bulk up top at all tends to make me look a good 5-15 pounds heavier than I actually am. So I can't get any tops that aren't pretty well fitted around the waist (no babydoll flowy shirts for me) unless they hang just perfectly. Unfortunately, this rules out so many tops, and I'd have to be very picky about a ruffly top. It doesn't help that most of the ruffly tops that I find seem like they're more appropriate for a lolita tea party than to wear with some dark jeans to the grocery store... I don't even know where these tops keep coming from!

Do you do much shopping at thrift stores?

For the cultured and aspiring, eh?

What about those of us who choose to wallow in their boorishness?

@ Cherry: I pretty much always wear skinny jeans/drainpipes. I have an hourglass figure, but I'm still heavier up top than I would like to be.
I do some shopping at thrift stores, yes. They are such a delight. You never know what might turn up!
@Howdy: Hi! We give people pretty long leashes in here, boorishness wise. I mean, there is a line, but so far it's only been pushed.
Your avatar is looking pretty regal, nicely done.

Part of it is out of necessity. We don't have may people coming in here, I don't want to scare the few that do come in off.
But also, I feel that one should make the internet as relaxed as it is possible for them to do, because there's sure as hell enough people willing to go the antagonistic route out there.
Thanks. I don't have a lot to work with, but I was pleased with how it turned out. And clearly people are getting what I am trying to convey.

Agreed. Real life can be far too heavy-handed without having to deal with interweb conflicts.

I'm also a big believer in honesty on the internet. Never so much that I might endanger myself, but the internet itself is a barrier (when compared to usual human interaction), and untruths only serve to widen the distance.

I tried doing skinny jeans for a while, but they were just too uncomfortable. Maybe I had a size too small, but I just don't quite have the legs for them. I love bootcut and the occasional wide leg.

I do the majority of my shopping in thrift stores. The treasure hunting is a favorite pastime of mine, although if you're looking for a specific kind of thing, it can be quite difficult. I'm currently on the search for a gray cardigan, but Goodwill isn't putting out sweaters anymore. It's still cold, Goodwill, come on! I know you've just got a bunch sitting in the back, bring them back out. :gonk:

Regarding the internet topic, I think it goes without saying that I'm pretty open and honest. Although I do tend to act cheerier and more high-strung than I am, for some reason. I think I come across a bit more Type A?

I used to wear boot cut, but I just feel dopey in them now. Not that I look dopey, I just feel it.
I sense that there is a difference between my online persona and my offline one, but I just can't put my finger on it. Perhaps I am more chatty and less deep thinking?

Do you wear skirts much? I try to, but I just can't seem to find tops that don't look weird with skirts. I'm trying to find someone who wears skirts a lot who doesn't have tastes completely opposite to mine so I can pick their style for tips on what to wear with skirts.

Not often. I only have a few dresses and skirts. But I can try? I like a layered look. Skirts and tights or, even better, leggings. Multiple layers.

I love leggings too. Much more comfortable. That my shirts wardrobe consists mostly of Tshirts probably doesn't help... Tshirts and skirts are generally an awkward combo. I need to do some browsing at chictopia and lookbook, I'm sure to find some stylish skirt-wearin' ladies there.

Tanks are good for skirts. I personally wear a lot of tunic tops, especially white ones. Those are very versatile.
Things are OK. Not more okay than usual, but still okay. Dad's out of hospital and physical therapy rehab, but he's still very weak, in fact, worse off than he has been in a long time. Plus he has bronchitis on top of it all. Just minor stresses and such. We'll see how it goes.

Unfortunately most tanks look oddly strange on me. :( I think I'll try some button-downs. Saw a light chambray shirt with a light skirt, and it was quite a nice combo. I'll try to mimic that for starters.

I hope your dad starts regaining his strength soon. :( Hope the bronchitis clears up too. Hugs and all that.

That does sound like a nice combo.
Yeah, it's been hard on him, the bronchitis. He has very brittle bones on top of all his other ailments, so the constant coughing, unpleasant as that is on it's own, also strains those bones and adds to his aches and pains.
thx 4 teh hugs.
